C1 World Dialogue

C1 World Dialogue is an initiative, whose stated mission is to "support and promote, propagate and preserve, peace harmony and friendship between the Western and Islamic Worlds". [1] The initiative has its origins in the Council of One Hundred Leaders (C-100) West-Islamic Dialogue originally launched by the World Economic Forum in response to the attacks of 11 September 2001 on the USA. [2] Since then, the group has evolved into an autonomous body with an institutional base as a Swiss foundation, based in Basel. [1] The president of the General Conference of the organization is former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. [3]

Main activities

The initiative publishes the Annual Dialog Report, that combines data and research about Muslim-West relations with commentary and analysis. The Reports stated aims are to "provide the knowledge-base for the actions needed to achieve sustainably improved Muslim-West relations that are conducive to peace, stability and mutual flourishing." [1] The first version of the report was published with the WEF in 2008 at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 24 [4] [5] [6] [7] Another edition was launched in 2009 at events in Egypt, the UK and United States. [8]

The report consists of four sections. The first explores the basis for building a common platform for practical cooperation. The second one outlines the conceptual and theoretical basis for the work while section three presents current extensive survey and other data about the state of relations based on the continuous research of PEW [9] and Media Tenor. [10] The fourth section contains current examples of cross-religious dialogue in practice.

The C-1 is developing practical work in several areas led by its constituent Commissions with a particular focus on work with the Media and in Education. It is also working to promote the platform for cooperation offered by the Common Word initiative proposing cooperation on the basis of the twin Commandments to love God and our neighbour. It is also developing a rapid response capacity in order to help de-escalate unstable situations that suddenly arise and which may lead to conflict or misunderstanding. Recent press releases have addressed the minaret controversy in Switzerland [11] and the riots against Christians in Gojra, Pakistan. [12] The rapid response work in communication is coordinated by the UN Alliance of Civilizations.

The C1 World Dialogue plans to hold its annual General Conference, which will bring together all the participating members, next year in Sarajevo. The president of the General Conference is the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. [3]

Members

The C-1 is led by the Co-chairs Ali Gomaa, [13] [14] the Grand Mufti of Egypt and the Bishop of London Richard Chartres together with an Executive which the multi-stakeholder character of the initiative and includes public and religious leaders and representatives from media, business, academia and the civil society. Additional members of the Executive Board include Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, the Grand Mufti of Bosnia, Mustafa Ceric, Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin, Kai Diekmann Editor of Bild (Germany), professors John Esposito of Georgetown, Anthony Grayling of London, Ibrahim Kalin (Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister of Turkey), David Ford of Cambridge and Miroslav Volf of Yale, Muna Abu-Sulayman and the founder of the People-to-People President Mary Eisenhower. [15] Theodore Cardinal McCarrick also serves as a special Advisor.

The initiative was founded by Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad bin Talal of Jordan, [16] Canon Alistair Macdonald-Radcliff [17] and publisher Roland Schatz, [18] who were also joined by the New York-based businessman Haris Hromic. [15] [19]

During his papal tenure, Pope Benedict XVI focused on building on the outreach of his predecessors towards Islam, particularly on the efforts of Pope John Paul II, who experts say established trust and opened opportunities for dialogue with Muslims. One of the important milestones in the Pope's efforts included a religious and peaceful initiative called A Common Word. This was provoked by a 2006 lecture he delivered at a university in Regensburg, Germany, which prompted Muslim leaders to gather and make overtures to their Christian and Jewish counterparts. Later on, Pope Benedict pursued key initiatives that helped foster Christian and Muslim dialogue. These were founded on the Pope's belief that Christians and Muslims have shared religious experience and that Christianity and Islam are both theologically founded in "God's irruptive call ... heard in the midst of man's ordinary daily existence."

The Amman Message is a statement calling for tolerance and unity in the Muslim world that was issued on 9 November 2004 by King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein of Jordan, and his advisor Sheikh Izz-Eddine Al-Tamimi. The message aims to "clarify to the modern world the true nature of Islam and the nature of true Islam," and to specify which actions do and do not represent the religion.

The Tony Blair Faith Foundation was an interfaith charitable foundation established in May 2008 by former British prime minister Tony Blair. Since December 2016 its work has been continued by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.

Project Aladdin is a multi-faceted cultural initiative launched in March 2009 under the patronage of UNESCO with the aim of countering Holocaust denial and all forms of racism and intolerance, while promoting intercultural dialogue, particularly among Muslims and Jews. The project was initiated by the Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah, a French foundation dedicated to keeping alive the memory of the Holocaust.

Founded in 2004, the Cordoba Initiative is an Islamic, multi-national, multi-faith organization dedicated to improving Muslim-West relations. It promotes the controversial interfaith Cordoba House community center, later renamed Park51.

The Muslim Seven Year Action Plan on Climate Change is a climate action plan for the global Islamic community, meant to run from 2010 to 2017. It was developed by the British Earth Mates Dialogue Center and the Kuwait Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. It is one of several multi-year climate action plans developed by major religious communities, developed in coordination with the Alliance of Religions and Conservation and the United Nations Development Programme.

The Valley of Peace initiative is an effort to promote economic cooperation between Israel, Jordan, and Palestine based around efforts and joint projects in the Arava/Arabah Valley, along which runs the southern portion of the Israel - Jordan border. It received the personal attention and support of Shimon Peres, President of Israel. The initiative involved ongoing joint efforts by regional leaders to launch joint new industrial and economic projects, which will create new local businesses and job growth, and promote ongoing cooperation.

In 1991, Azerbaijan joined the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and started to build relations with the organization. As a result, the ambassador of Azerbaijan to Saudi Arabia was given a mandate of permanent representative of Azerbaijan to the General Secretariat of the OIC in May 1994.

The 2016 conference on Sunni Islam in Grozny was convened to define the term "Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah", i.e. who are "the people of Sunnah and majority Muslim community", and oppose Takfiri groups. The conference was held in the Chechen Republic capital of Grozny from 25 to 27 August 2016, sponsored by the president of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, and attended by approximately 200 Muslim scholars from 30 countries, especially from Russia, Egypt, Syria, Libya, Kuwait, Sudan, Jordan, etc.

The Very Reverend Canon Alistair Macdonald-Radcliff is an English Anglican priest known for his leadership of various organizations connected to international development and inter-faith dialogue as well as his commentary upon international affairs. Macdonald-Radcliff is the Director General of the C1 World Dialogue, a group that has its origins in an initiative of the World Economic Forum. Its President is the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. He was formerly a senior advisor to Lord Carey of Clifton and to the King Abdullah Bin Aziz International Center for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, and was also the Dean of All Saints' Cathedral in Cairo. Currently he serves as the Rector at the Church of the Advent in Boston, a Director of the Society for the Preservation of the Book of Common Prayer, and the Editor-in-Chief of The Anglican Way.
