Line 50 is a Luxembourgian railway line connecting Luxembourg City to the west of the country, leading to Kleinbettingen and on to Arlon, in south-eastern Belgium. The terminus at the eastern end is Luxembourg railway station. It is designated, and predominantly operated, by Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois.
The line was opened by the Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Est in 1859. In 1956, the line was electrified at 3 kV DC, in order to allow Belgian locomotives to go into Luxembourg station without changing at the border. The line was re-electrified at 25 kV AC on 16 September 2018, and services into Luxembourg are now run by multi-system SNCB/NMBS locomotives. [1]

Mamer is a commune and town in south-western Luxembourg. It is located 7 km (4.3 mi) west of Luxembourg City. The commune includes both Mamer itself and the smaller communities of Capellen and Holzem. Mamer is situated on the river Mamer, a tributary of the Alzette. The A6 motorway from Luxembourg to Brussels, also designated European route E25, runs through Mamer.

Line 70 is a railway line connecting Luxembourg City to the south-west of Luxembourg, and on to Belgium and France. The terminus at the north-eastern end is Luxembourg railway station, whilst the terminals at the south are the French town of Longuyon and the Belgian town of Athus. It is designated, and predominantly operated, by Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois During the 2010 decade, the former line 80 have been merged with this line in order to give the newly created line between Thionville and Longwy via Esch-sur-Alzette.

The terminus at the southern end is Luxembourg railway station, whilst the terminals at the northern end are Diekirch, Wiltz, Troisvierges and Liège. It is designated and predominantly operated by the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL).

Belgium was heavily involved in the early development of railway transport. Belgium was the second country in Europe, after Great Britain, to open a railway and produce locomotives. The first line, between the cities of Brussels and Mechelen opened in 1835. Belgium was the first state in Europe to create a national railway network and the first to possess a nationalised railway system. The network expanded fast as Belgium industrialised, and by the early 20th century was increasingly under state-control. The nationalised railways, under the umbrella organisation National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS/SNCB), retained their monopoly until liberalisation in the 2000s.

The Société royale grand-ducale des chemins de fer Guillaume-Luxembourg or "Royal Grand Ducal William-Luxembourg Railway Company", was a Luxembourgish company, with French capital, created in 1857 to operate the 1855 concessions for the railway lines in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. It constructed a set of lines that made up the railway network called the Guillaume-Luxembourg network. It was never an operating company, transferring this activity to a French company, the Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Est, then to the Imperial Railways in Alsace-Lorraine in 1872, to the Administration des chemins de fer d'Alsace et de Lorraine in 1919, and then to the SNCF in 1938. During the German occupation in World War II, the Deutsche Reichsbahn operated the network until the liberation; the Guillaume-Luxembourg company ceased to exist as such in 1946 with the creation of the Société nationale des chemins de fer luxembourgeois.
