CLIC Sargent is a charity in the United Kingdom formed in 2005. CLIC Sargent is the UK's leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families. Its care teams provide specialist support across the UK. [1]

CLIC Sargent supports people from diagnosis onwards and aims to help the whole family deal with the impact of cancer and its treatment, life after treatment and, in some cases, bereavement.

The charity also undertakes research into the impact of cancer on children and young people. It uses this evidence to raise awareness and to seek to influence government and policy-makers, and those who provide public services across the UK.

History

CLIC Sargent was formed in 2005 after a successful merger between Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood (CLIC) and Sargent Cancer Care for Children. Sargent was set up in 1967 in memory of conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent who died of cancer. [2]

Chief executive

CLIC Sargent's chief executive is Kate Lee, who took over from Lorraine Clifton in December 2015. [3]

Awareness and fundraising

CLIC Sargent's main fundraising and awareness event is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month [4] in September. People also fundraise through runs, cycles and other events. [5]

Blood Cancer UK

Blood Cancer UK, is a UK-based charity dedicated to funding research into all blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, as well as offering information and support to blood cancer patients.

Duncan Pow is a Scottish actor who has appeared in many television programmes and films including Black Mirror, 24: Live Another Day, The Night Manager, Humans, The Wrong Mans, Brief Encounters and most recently in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He is best known for his roles as Liam Mackay in the Sky 1 drama Dream Team, and as Dr Linden Cullen in the BBC One medical drama series Holby City.

Liam Fairhurst was a British charity fundraiser who had been diagnosed with synovial sarcoma. He was diagnosed with the disease in his leg in 2005, and large portions of his leg muscles had to be removed. The cancer eventually spread to his lungs. By the time of his death, he had collected almost £320,000, mainly for children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent.

Swim Across America Inc., (SAA) is a nonprofit dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention, and treatment. It does so by hosting charity swims and donating the proceeds to a hospital. Since its founding, SAA has granted over $85 million to fund cancer research and clinical trials. More than 100,000 donations a year are made to support participants in Swim Across America charity swims to meet their fundraising goals. The proceeds from SAA charity swims are granted to fund cancer research at world-renowned hospitals such as Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Johns Hopkins.

Childhood cancer

Childhood cancer is cancer in a child. In the United States, an arbitrarily adopted standard of the ages used are 0–14 years inclusive, that is, up to 14 years 11.9 months of age. However, the definition of childhood cancer sometimes includes adolescents between 15–19 years old. Pediatric oncology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in children.

Hair for Hope Charity event

Hair for Hope is a charity event in which participants have their heads shaven in order to raise funds for the Children's Cancer Foundation whose mission is to "improving the quality of life of children with cancer and their families through enhancing their emotional, social and medical well-being."

Redkite is a non-government charity organisation based in Sydney, Australia. It supports young cancer patients up to the ages of 18 and their families with financial assistance, hospital services and rehabilitation activities, social services and grant-making activities. The organisation operates in all Australian states and has raised $11.88 million through fundraising activities in the 2017 financial year with net surplus totalling $39,000. Redkite currently has 68 employees, 501-1000 active volunteers and 9 board members. Redkite is classified as a large charity organisation which makes up 17% of the 56,000 registered charities in Australia. Charities that provide educational or health services such as universities, hospitals and aged care facilities makeup 18.7% of the sector however contribute 45% of the sectors revenue which was reported to be 142.8 billion in 2017.

African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) is an independent UK charity for people with leukaemia and other life-threatening disorders. The ACLT aims to raise awareness on stem cell, blood and organ donation in the UK, with a particular focus on black and mixed race communities.
