COSCO Beijing is a container ship built in 2006, by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. in South Korea. Beijing is owned by Capetanissa Maritime Corp of Greece, and operated by COSCO Container Lines Co Ltd (COSCON). [ citation needed ]
Beijing is a GL class ship, with a length of 350.55 m (1,150.1 ft). She has one oil engine driving 1FP propeller, AuxGen 2 × 2,800 kW (3,800 hp ) a.c., 3 × 2,200 kW (3,000 hp) a.c. Beijing has a service speed of 19 kn (35 km/h ; 22 mph ). The fastest recorded speed on Beijing was 21.3 kn (39.4 km/h; 24.5 mph) [3]
On 18 November 2021, the ship was boarded in the Port of Long Beach by the United States Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board marine casualty investigators. They were investigating an undersea pipeline that may have been damaged by a ship's anchor and had shortly before spilled oil onto the beaches of Orange County. The ship's owners, Capetanissa of Liberia and the operator V-Ships Greece Ltd. were designated as parties of interest in the investigation. [4]
The Exxon Valdez was an oil tanker that gained notoriety after running aground in Prince William Sound, spilling its cargo of crude oil into the sea. On 24 March 1989, while owned by the former Exxon Shipping Company, captained by Joseph Hazelwood and First Mate James Kunkel, and bound for Long Beach, California, the vessel ran aground on the Bligh Reef, resulting in the second largest oil spill in United States history. The size of the spill is estimated to have been 40,900 to 120,000 m3. In 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil spill was listed as the 54th-largest spill in history.

MV Fu Shan Hai was a Chinese bulk carrier which on 31 May 2003 was involved in a collision with the Polish container ship Gdynia north-west of the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. Later the same day Fu Shan Hai sank in 69 metres (226 ft) of water. At that moment, she was the biggest ship to be sunk in the Baltic Sea.
Hanjin Venezia, formerly named the Cosco Busan, is a 275 m (902 ft) container ship. On 7 November 2007, it collided with the protective fender of the Delta Tower of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge in heavy fog. The collision sliced open two of its fuel tanks and led to the Cosco Busan oil spill in San Francisco Bay. She was renamed the Hanjin Venezia after the accident.

The Cosco Busan oil spill occurred at 08:30 UTC-8 on 7 November 2007 between San Francisco and Oakland, California, in which 53,569 US gal (202,780 L) of IFO-380 heavy fuel oil, sometimes referred to as "bunker fuel", spilled into San Francisco Bay after the container ship Cosco Busan, operated by Fleet Management Limited struck Delta Tower of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge in thick fog.

MOL Comfort was a 2008-built Bahamian-flagged post-Panamax container ship chartered by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. The vessel was launched in 2008 as APL Russia and sailed under that name until 2012, when the ship was renamed to MOL Comfort. On 17 June 2013, she broke in two about 200 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen. The aft section sank on 27 June and the bow section, after having been destroyed by fire, on 11 July.

The Orange County oil spill on October 1, 2021, is an oil spill that deposited crude oil onto popular Southern California beaches on the West Coast of the United States. While residents reported smelling fumes, a ship noticed an oil slick that evening and reported it to federal authorities. When oil from an underwater pipeline in the waters of coastal Orange County began washing ashore, officials in Huntington Beach closed the typically crowded beach in the evening of October 2. The U.S. Coast Guard estimated that spill covered 8,320 acres (3,370 ha) of the ocean's surface as they monitored it several times daily from the air. Investigations found a 17.7-mile (28.5 km) pipeline connecting offshore oil platforms with the shore had been displaced by being dragged by a ship's anchor.
