The Cairns Dolphins are an Australian basketball team based in Cairns, Queensland. The Dolphins compete in the women's NBL1 North league and play their home games at Early Settler Stadium.

Team history

After operating a successful basketball program in Cairns, Queensland, Cairns Basketball joined the Queensland State Basketball League in its second season in 1987. [1] They fielded two teams, the Cairns Marlins in the men's competition and the Cairns Dolphins in the women's competition.

After a successful first season for the NBL1 in 2019, in 2020 it expanded into Queensland and replaced the QBL. After this change, the Dolphins transferred to the NBL1 North. [2] [3]

The National Basketball League (NBL) is a men's professional basketball league in Oceania, currently composed of 10 teams: 9 in Australia and 1 in New Zealand. It is the premier professional men's basketball league in Australia and New Zealand.

NBL1 North, formerly the Queensland Basketball League (QBL), is a semi-professional basketball league in Queensland and Northern Territory, Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2020, Basketball Queensland partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to Queensland. NBL1 replaced the former QBL to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in Queensland. As a result, the QBL became the north conference of NBL1. Clint Steindl Australian basketball player

Clinton Steindl is an Australian professional basketball player for the Tasmania JackJumpers of the National Basketball League (NBL). After attending the Australian Institute of Sport, he moved to the United States in 2008 to play college basketball for Saint Mary's. In 2012, he returned to Australia and joined the Cairns Taipans, where he spent two seasons. In 2014, he joined the Townsville Crocodiles, where he spent another two seasons and won the NBL Most Improved Player in 2016. After stints in Belgium and Greece, he joined the Perth Wildcats in 2017, going on to win two NBL championships in 2019 and 2020. He has also represented the Australian national team.

USC Rip City is a NBL1 North club based in Sunshine Coast, Queensland. The club fields a team in both the Men's and Women's NBL1 North. NBL1

NBL1 is a semi-professional basketball league in Australia, consisting of South, North, Central, West Conferences and East Conferences with both men's and women's competitions. Each conference is run by their respective state governing body, with the league including 71 clubs from Victoria (16), Queensland (15), Western Australia (14), South Australia (11), New South Wales (11), Tasmania (3) and the Australian Capital Territory (1). The league replaced the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL), Australia's pre-eminent semi-professional basketball league between 1981 and 2018. Following the NBL1's inaugural season in 2019, the 2020 season saw the 2019 teams comprise the new South Conference and the former Queensland Basketball League (QBL) and Premier League become the new North and Central Conferences. In 2021, the league was joined by the teams from the former WA State Basketball League (SBL). In 2022, the league will be joined by the teams from the NSW Waratah League.

Cairns Basketball Stadium Convention center in Carins, Australia

Cairns Basketball Stadium is a basketball facility in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Currently comprising a centre court, four side courts, a sports science centre, a weights room and multiple locker rooms, the facility currently hosts the Cairns Taipans, Cairns Marlins and Cairns Dolphins training sessions, the Taipans' NBL pre-season games and the Marlins' and Dolphins' NBL1 North games. The facility also hosts regular junior and senior competitions run by the Cairns Basketball Association.

Cairns Marlins

The Cairns Marlins are an Australian basketball team based in Cairns, Queensland. The Marlins compete in the men's NBL1 North league and play their home games at Early Settler Stadium. The team is closely affiliated with the Cairns Taipans and Cairns Basketball, the major administrative basketball organisation in the region.

NBL1 South

NBL1 South is a NBL1 conference based in South East Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2019, Basketball Victoria partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to create NBL1 to replace the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL), Australia's pre-eminent semi-professional basketball league between 1981 and 2018. NBL1 South was the lone conference in 2019, with Queensland and South Australia joining in 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NBL1 South did not have a season in 2020 and only half a season in 2021.

The 2020 NBL1 season was due to be the second season of NBL1, and the first season utilising the conference system after the Queensland Basketball League (QBL) and Premier League joined the league during the off-season. The season was scheduled to begin on March 14 for the Central Conference, April 18 for the South Conference and April 24 for the North Conference, however the COVID-19 pandemic forced the start of the season to be delayed, and later cancelled.

The 2021–22 Cairns Taipans season will be the 23rd season for the Cairns Taipans in the NBL, and their first under the leadership of their new head coach Adam Forde.
