State Route 284 (SR 284) is a state highway in the U.S. state of California that serves as a spur route off of State Route 70 in Chilcoot in Plumas County, connecting to Frenchman Lake.
A state highway, state road, or state route is usually a road that is either numbered or maintained by a sub-national state or province. A road numbered by a state or province falls below numbered national highways in the hierarchy. Roads maintained by a state or province include both nationally numbered highways and un-numbered state highways. Depending on the state, "state highway" may be used for one meaning and "state road" or "state route" for the other.
In the United States, a state is a constituent political entity, of which there are currently 50. Bound together in a political union, each state holds governmental jurisdiction over a separate and defined geographic territory and shares its sovereignty with the federal government. Due to this shared sovereignty, Americans are citizens both of the federal republic and of the state in which they reside. State citizenship and residency are flexible, and no government approval is required to move between states, except for persons restricted by certain types of court orders.

The route begins at State Route 70 at Chilcoot. It then continues north to its north end at the Frenchman Lake Recreation Area at Frenchman Lake.
State Route 70 is a state highway in the U.S. state of California, connecting SR 99 north of Sacramento with U.S. Route 395 near Beckwourth Pass via the Feather River Canyon. Through the Feather River Canyon, from SR 149 to US 395, SR 70 is the Feather River Scenic Byway, a Forest Service Byway that parallels the ex-Western Pacific Railroad's Feather River Route.
Chilcoot is an unincorporated community in Plumas County, California. It lies at an elevation of 5,013 feet (1,528 m). Chilcoot is located 17 miles (27.4 km) east of Portola.
Frenchman Lake(a.k.a. Frenchmen's Reservoir and several derivations thereof) is located in Southeastern Plumas County, California and was created by the damming of Little Last Chance Creek. Named after Claude Francois Seltier, a French immigrant who settled in the area in 1858.
SR 284 is not part of the National Highway System, [2] a network of highways that are considered essential to the country's economy, defense, and mobility by the Federal Highway Administration. [3]

Altogether, it constitutes the largest highway system in the world.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is a division of the United States Department of Transportation that specializes in highway transportation. The agency's major activities are grouped into two programs, the Federal-aid Highway Program and the Federal Lands Highway Program. Its role had previously been performed by the Office of Road Inquiry, Office of Public Roads and the Bureau of Public Roads.
Except where prefixed with a letter, postmiles were measured on the road as it was in 1964, based on the alignment that existed at the time, and do not necessarily reflect current mileage. R reflects a realignment in the route since then, M indicates a second realignment, L refers an overlap due to a correction or change, and T indicates postmiles classified as temporary (for a full list of prefixes, see the list of postmile definitions). [1] Segments that remain unconstructed or have been relinquished to local control may be omitted. The entire route is in Plumas County.
California uses a postmile highway location marker system on all of its state highways, including U.S. Routes and Interstate Highways. The postmile markers indicate the distance a route travels through individual counties, as opposed to milestones that indicate the distance traveled through a state. The postmile system is the only route reference system used by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
In 1963 and 1964, the California Division of Highways implemented a major renumbering of its state highways. The majority of sign routes—those marked for the public—kept their numbers; the main changes were to the legislative routes, which had their numbers changed to match the sign routes. Many formerly unsigned routes received sign numbers corresponding to their new legislative numbers. A smaller change was the removal and truncating of many U.S. Routes in favor of the Interstate Highways, and the renumbering of State Routes that conflicted with Interstate numbers. Some U.S. Routes that were officially removed continued to be signed until the replacement Interstates were completed.
Plumas County is a county in the Sierra Nevada of California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,007. The county seat is Quincy, and the only incorporated city is Portola. The largest community in the county is East Quincy. The county was named for the Spanish Río de las Plumas, which flows through the county.

State Route 89 is a state highway in the U.S. state of California that travels in the north–south direction, serving as a major thoroughfare for many mountain communities in the Sierra Nevada and the Cascade Range. It starts from U.S. Route 395 near Topaz Lake, winding its way up to the 8,314-foot (2,534 m) Monitor Pass, down to the Carson River, and up again over the 7,740-foot (2,359 m) Luther Pass. From that point on, the route generally loses elevation on its way past Lake Tahoe, through Tahoe and Plumas National Forests until Lake Almanor. For roughly nine miles the route is then a part of State Route 36. The route then ascends to the 5,753-foot (1,754 m) Morgan Summit. After it enters Lassen Volcanic National Park it continues to gain elevation until it reaches its highest point in an unnamed pass in the middle of Lassen Peak and Bumpass Mountain. The road then descends and heads northwest, finally terminating at Interstate 5 at the foot of Mount Shasta at around 3,600 feet (1,100 m).
State Route 28 is a state highway in the U.S. state of California that travels along the northern shore of Lake Tahoe, starting at Route 89 in Tahoe City and ending at the Nevada state border, whereupon it becomes Nevada State Route 28.

State Route 53, also known as the Clearlake Expressway for part of its length, is a state highway in the U.S. state of California that runs in a north–south direction in Lake County east of Clear Lake, It connects SR 29 and SR 20 via the city of Clearlake.

State Route 161 is a state highway in the U.S. state of California that runs along the California–Oregon state line in Siskiyou County. State Route 281 is an approximately 3-mile (4.8 km) state highway in the U.S. state of California that runs along Soda Bay Road from near the southern shore of Clear Lake to State Route 29 in Glenview in Lake County. SR 281 is legislatively defined to be a loop route of SR 29 that runs along or near the southern edge of Clear Lake from Glenview to Lakeport, but most of this is unconstructed.

Route 263 connects State Route 3 near the north city limits of Yreka to State Route 96 eight miles north. SR 263 was once part of U.S. Route 99.
