Canada and Lithuania have long-standing foreign relations. Diplomatic relations were first established in 1937. Canada never recognized the annexation of Lithuania into the Soviet Union, and after Lithuania regained its independence in 1991, the two countries re-established diplomatic relations in 1991. Both countries are full members of NATO and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
Diplomatic relations between Canada and Lithuania were established in 1937. During World War II, Lithuania was at various times occupied by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Canadian prisoners of war were among Allied POWs held by the Germans in the Stalag Luft VI POW camp in German-occupied Lithuania. [1] In 1944, Lithuania was forcibly annexed by the Soviet Union and Canada never recognized the annexation of Lithuania into the Soviet Union. In 1990, Lithuania obtained its independence after the Dissolution of the Soviet Union and Canada and Lithuania re-established diplomatic relations on 2 September 1991. [2] In 2016, both nations marked the 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations. [3]
Both nations have signed bilateral agreements such as an Agreement on the Avoidance of Double Taxation (1997); Agreement of Social Security Cooperation (2006) and an Agreement for Youth Mobility (2010). [3]
In 2016, trade between Canada and Lithuania totaled US$422.8 million. Canadian exports to Lithuania reached US$51.1 million, and included machinery, motor vehicles and parts, fish and seafood, and electrical machinery and equipment. Lithuanian exports to Canada reached US$371.7 million, and included mineral fuels and oils, furniture and bedding, scientific and technical instruments, and fertilizers. [3]
The three Baltic countries, or the Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – are held to have continued as independent states under international law while under Soviet occupation from 1940 to 1991, as well as during the German occupation in 1941–1944/1945. The prevailing opinion accepts the Baltic thesis that the Soviet occupation was illegal, and all actions of the Soviet Union related to the occupation are regarded as contrary to international law in general and to the bilateral treaties between the USSR and the three Baltic countries in particular.
Lithuania is one of the most pro-United States nations in Europe and the world, with 73% of Lithuanians viewing the U.S. positively in 2011. According to the 2012 U.S. Global Leadership Report, 48% of Lithuanians approve of U.S. leadership, with 20% disapproving and 32% uncertain.

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, does not have official diplomatic relations with Lithuania, since Lithuania does not officially recognize the Republic of China and maintains a One-China Policy whereby it views the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing China, including Taiwan. Despite this, relations between Lithuania and Taiwan have grown closer in recent years. In 2021, Taiwan opened the "Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania". Meanwhile, Lithuania intends to open a representative office in Taiwan. The recent strengthening of relations between Lithuania and Taiwan in 2021 has been heavily opposed by the People's Republic of China (PRC), which doesn't recognize Taiwan. Notably, the PRC has downgraded its embassy in Lithuania to the status of a "chargé d'affaires" in protest. The PRC and Lithuania had previously maintained full diplomatic relations with one another since 1991.
Foreign relations exist between Australia and Lithuania. Australia was among the first countries to re-recognise Lithuania's independence on 27 August 1991. Both countries formally established diplomatic relations on 6 November 1991. Australia is represented in Lithuania through its embassy in Warsaw, Poland. Lithuania has had an embassy in Canberra since 2021.
Germany–Lithuania relations are the bilateral relations between Germany and Lithuania. The formal diplomatic relations existed from 1918 to 1944 and again since 1991. Both countries are members of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), OECD, the Council of Europe, NATO and the European Union. Lithuania has also been part of the Eurozone since 2015. The relationship is described as close and reliable partnership.
