Cari Hughes (born 15 March 1999) is a Welsh distance and cross country runner. [1]
A member of the Swansea Harriers, in 2017 she won the Welsh Schools title, Welsh Junior title and represented Great Britain in the junior races at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and European Cross-Country Championships. In 2018, she broke the Welsh Junior 1500m record in the summer of 2018, running a new lifetime best of 4:17.51 at the BMC Stretford Grand Prix. That year she became the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) 1500m champion, running for Loughborough University. She won Junior Female Endurance Athlete of the Year at the 2018 Welsh Athletics Awards. [2]
She won a bronze medal with the British U23 team at the 2021 European Cross Country Championships in Dublin. [3] She was a member of the British senior team at the 2022 European Cross Country Championships in Turin, placing 22nd individually. [4]
She won the 800 metres and finished second in the 1500 metres representing Ynys Môn at the 2023 Island Games in Guernsey. [5] [6]
She finished behind Megan Davies but ahead of 2020 Olympic Games finalist Alexandra Bell at the Armagh 5km road race in February 2024. [7] In November 2024, she was the second British woman to finish the Cardiff Cross Challenge, part of the World Athletics Cross Country Tour, behind Kate Axford. [8] She finished as runner-up to Axford at the Liverpool Cross Challenge on 23 November 2024, an event which doubled-up as the British trials for the Euro Cross Championships. [9] [10] She was subsequently selected for the British team for the 2024 European Cross Country Championships in Antalya, Turkey. [11]
From Welshpool, her brother Iola Hughes is also a runner. [12]
Joanne Marie Pavey MBE is a British long-distance runner representing Europe, Great Britain and England in a career notable for its longevity, range and consistency. A World, European and Commonwealth medallist, Pavey won her only senior title when she claimed the 10,000 m gold medal at the 2014 European Championships in Zürich, ten months after giving birth to her second child, to become the oldest female European champion in history at the age of 40 years and 325 days.

Hannah England is a British middle-distance running athlete who specialised in the 800 metres, 1500 metres and mile run. At 1500 m, she is the 2011 World Championship silver medallist and finished fourth at the 2013 World Championships. She also competed at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. England is one of only five British women in history to have run under two minutes for 800 m and nine minutes for 3000 m, the others being Christina Boxer, Kirsty Wade, Jessica Judd and Laura Muir. She announced her retirement from athletics on 14 January 2020.
Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club, formed in 1882 as Roath (Cardiff) Harriers, is an athletics club based at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium, Cardiff. The club began as a cross country club, the first athletics only club in Wales. Roath Harriers runners became individual and team champions of the first Welsh Cross Country Championships, held on 7 March 1894. Roath Harriers shared Maindy Stadium with Birchgrove Harriers from its opening in 1951 and the two clubs amalgamated to form Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club in 1968. Cardiff were British Athletics League champions in 1973, 1974, and 1975 and remain one of the top twelve clubs in Britain.
The 2009 European Cross Country Championships was a continental cross country running competition that was held on 13 December 2009 near Dublin city, Fingal in Ireland. Dublin was selected as the host city in 2007 and the event was the first time that a major European athletics championships took place in Ireland. The six men's and women's races in the championship programme took place in Santry Demense on a looped course with flat and grassy ground. The 16th edition of the European Cross Country Championships featured 323 athletes from 30 nations.
Charlotte Lucy Purdue is a British long-distance runner who competes in the Marathon and Half Marathon, as well as cross country running for Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletics Club. After winning a number of youth titles at national level, she had her first international success at the European Cross Country Championships, winning medals in the junior races of 2007 and 2008. She was also the best European junior at the World Cross Country Championships those years.
