Kate Axford (born 31 March 1999) is a British cross country and long distance runner, and former international field hockey player. [1]
She played for Cambridge City in the Women's England Hockey League and represented England at under-16, under-18 and under-21 levels. [2] She won bronze with England U21’s in the European Championships in Valencia in 2017 and went on to play for Wimbledon Hockey Club in the Women's England Hockey League Premier Division. She became contracted to play for the senior Great Britain women's national field hockey team in 2022. [3] [4]
A hip injury caused her to retire from hockey and try competitive running, a sport she had competed in nine years earlier while at school. She joined Belgrave Harriers after being spotted by coaches at a 5 km race in Battersea Park. [5] In April 2023, she won her first ever 5000m track race in a time of 15:48.79 at the Comeback 5000 event in Battersea. That year she also won the 3000m race on her Team England debut in Loughborough, again her debut over that distance. [6]
She finished finished third in the 3000m at the UK Indoor Championships in Birmingham in February 2024, running a personal best 9:08.43. [7] [8] In June 2024, she ran 15:19.40 to finish fourth in the 5000m at the 2024 British Athletics Championships in Manchester. [9] [10]
In November 2024, she finished third at the Cardiff Cross Challenge, part of the World Athletics Cross Country Tour. [11] Later that month, she won the senior women’s title at the Liverpool Cross Challenge, which doubled up as the British trials for the European Cross Country Championship. [12] [13]
She was selected for the British team for the 2024 European Cross Country Championships in Antalya, Turkey where she finished tenth overall to help the British team to win the silver medal in the team race. [14] [15]
Axford is from Bedford. [6] She was educated at Bedford Girls' School before going on to study geography at the University of Exeter from 2017 to 2020. She is from a sporting family, with her mum playing lacrosse and her father playing rugby. Her siblings Maddie and Charlie also play Hockey. [16] [7] [17]
Mercy Cherono Koech is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner. She was the silver medalist in the 5000 metres at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics.
Angela BizzarriPflugrath is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and a former American distance runner. She competed for the University of Illinois (2006–2010) and won three NCAA national championships: in Cross Country, as well as in the 5000 meters (outdoor) and 3000 meters (indoor). As an Illini she earned nine All-American honours and five Big Ten Conference titles. She also holds Illini records in the 1500 meters, 3000 meters, 5000 meters (outdoor), 5000 meters (indoor), the mile, and, in Cross Country, the 6000 meters.
Hellen Onsando Obiri is a Kenyan middle- and long-distance runner. She is the only woman to have won world titles in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country. Obiri is a two-time Olympic 5,000 metres silver medallist from the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she also placed fourth over the 10,000 metres. She is a two-time world champion after winning the 5,000 m in 2017 and again in 2019, when she set a new championship record. Obiri also took world bronze for the 1,500 metres in 2013 and silver in the 10,000 m in 2022. She won the 3,000 metres race at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, claimed silver in 2014, and placed fourth in 2018. She is the 2019 World Cross Country champion. Obiri triumphed in the 2023 Boston Marathon, her second marathon race. She places fifth in the half marathon on the world all-time list.
Emily Sisson is an American long-distance runner. She set the North American record in the marathon on October 9, 2022, when she ran 2:18:29 to finish second at the Chicago Marathon. Sisson also held the American record in the half marathon from May 2022 until July 2023. She represented the United States in the 10000 metres at the 2017 and 2019 World Athletics Championships, finishing 9th and 10th. In June 2021, she won the 10000m at the 2020 US Olympic Trials and placed 10th in the 10000m final at the 2020 Summer Olympics. In 2024, she placed second in the marathon at the US Olympic Trials, qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics. She competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics Women's marathon on 11 August 2024, where she finished 23rd.
Hannah Nuttall is a British athlete. She competes in middle-distance and cross-country running events. In 2024, she became British champion in the 5000 metres.
Innes FitzGerald is a British track and field athlete and cross country runner. She is the 2023 and 2024 European U20 Cross Country champion.
Pamela Kosgei is a Kenyan track and field and cross-country athlete. In 2023, she became the Africa Under-20 champion, and the Kenyan senior national champion, at the 3000m Steeplechase. She committed to compete for the University of New Mexico at the NCAA level, starting with the 2024 Cross Country season.
