Carl William Doy ONZM (born 1947) is a British-born New Zealand pianist, composer and arranger. One of New Zealand's most successful musicians, Doy is probably best known for his multi-platinum selling Piano By Candlelight albums.

Doy was born in Camberley, Surrey, England. [1] He drew an interest in music as early as six years of age after he fell in love with his grandmother's piano. Although he did not have a formal music education at that time, he had a natural gift for playing by ear, which he then used to play popular songs of the day. It was only when he was in the Grammar School, his talents were identified by his music teachers who guided him to take the preliminary exams at the Royal College of Music. At 18 years of age, he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music and studied piano, organ and composition there for two years. [1]
In 1967, having achieved highest grades for theory in music, he joined the Arcadia cruise ship of P&O Cruises as its resident pianist. He spent the next few years playing between the cruise ship job and in UK clubs as well. In 1971, he was appointed the Musical Director aboard the Ocean Monarch cruise ship, which was one of the pioneers to have a full entertainment unit aboard. [1]
After few years of work on cruise ships at the sea, Doy decided to settle down to pursue his musical career in a different domain. That resulted in him moving to New Zealand in 1973 with wife Kathy. He started work at Television New Zealand, where he got himself established quickly as a session pianist and arranger. That was the beginning of his career as a very popular writer and arranger of music for thousands of radio and television programs over the next decade or so. The most significant work at that time was the Royal Variety Performance for Queen Elizabeth II. He also arranged the Pope's Mass, which involved writing for two orchestras and a large voice choir. He had the opportunity to play and tour with a variety of visiting artists such as Shirley Bassey and The Seekers.
His immense success in popular commercial music scene started in late 1980s with the introduction of the best selling Piano by Candlelight sequel. It all started when Doy met Auckland record producer Murray Thom at an Auckland hotel in 1987. [2] [3] Thom heard something he knew would be a winner; Doy playing different kind of lounge music in the foyer and the two got talking. [3] Within months Doy's first Piano by Candlelight album was released. [2] It was a big breakthrough for Doy and they decided to record an album with some popular music/songs in CD format. [4] This was beginning of the ever popular Piano By Candlelight series, which made its entry to the NZ charts at number one in its first week. [1] It was also one of the best selling albums ever by a NZ artist, selling in excess of one million copies in the US alone, and giving Carl the distinction of being the only New Zealand solo artist up until that time (1992) to have a certified platinum album in the US. [3] The albums have also sold more than three million copies worldwide [5] particularly in most European countries, the Far East, South America and Canada.
Eight more albums were recorded over the next twelve years under the same series. The second CD named Piano By Candlelight 2 created a record in 1989 for most copies sold in New Zealand of a locally recorded album. Oprah Winfrey is one of his fans [6] and his Together Collection was featured in her Favourite Things show in 2002 [7] where she said "It is so fabulous, I think it's the best." [8]
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sang his arrangement of E te Tarakihi from Gisborne in the first live broadcast of the new millennium, to a worldwide television audience of over a hundred million people. Doy was also the music director/arranger of a series of CD albums created by another successful musician, NZ guitarist Martin Winch. One such album, "Espresso Guitar" released in 1998 has sold more than 100,000 copies in New Zealand alone. [9]
In 1992, he received the Benny Award from the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand Inc, the highest honour available to a New Zealand variety entertainer. [10]
Doy has completed five series of TVNZ's Dancing with the Stars . [3] as its musical director.
In the 2009 Queen's Birthday Honours, Doy was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to music. [11]
Doy is a patron of the National Youth Theatre Company of New Zealand (NYTC).

Aiming to better incorporate Biblical scripture into contemporary worship music, the Garratts went on to produce a series of albums and song books of Bible verses set to soft rock, and became leading musicians and songwriters internationally in the Charismatic movement in the 1970s and 80s.
Tiki Taane is a New Zealand musician, experimentalist, musical activist, producer, and live engineer. He was a member of leading New Zealand band Salmonella Dub but left after eleven years on 1 January 2007 to pursue a solo career. His debut album, Past, Present, Future, was released on 22 October 2007 in New Zealand and has since gone two times platinum, achieving a number one single, "Always on My Mind", which became the first digital single to reach platinum sales and also held the record by staying in the NZ Top 40 Charts for 55 weeks. Taane is also the exclusive live sound engineer for New Zealand drum and bass act Shapeshifter since their first gig in 1999. Taane has also produced multi platinum albums for bands such as Six60, Shapeshifter, Salmonella Dub and Tiki Taane.
David Keith Dallas, better known by his stage name David Dallas, is a New Zealand rapper and songwriter of Samoan and European descent. He began his career under the stage name Con Psy, as a part of the rap group Frontline, before changing his stage name to his birth name and pursuing a solo career.

Introducing... Stan Walker is the debut studio album by season seven Australian Idol winner, Stan Walker. It was released through Sony Music Australia via its RCA Records label on 7 December 2009. The album contained the selected songs Walker performed during the top twelve on Australian Idol, as well as the two original songs, "Black Box" and "Think of Me". The album debuted at number two on the New Zealand Albums Chart and was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ). From the Inside Out is the second studio album by Australian-New Zealand recording artist Stan Walker, released on 20 August 2010 through Sony Music Australia. Walker worked with several record producers and songwriters for the album, including Audius Mtawarira, Israel Cruz, Ryan Tedder, Phil Tan and Stuart Crichton, among others. Musically, the album incorporates synthpop, rock, soul and R&B genres.

Let the Music Play is the third studio album by Australian-New Zealand recording artist Stan Walker, released through Sony Music Australia on 18 November 2011. Walker worked with several record producers on the album, including Richard Vission, Chico Bennett, Nicholas "RAS" Furlong and Static Revenger, among others. The album featured several guest vocalists, including Jessica Mauboy, Annabel Fay and Walker's mother April, who is featured in a remake of Eva Cassidy's version of "Songbird". Musically, the album features more up-tempo dance-pop and R&B genres than Walker's previous album, From the Inside Out (2010), which included deep and emotional tracks.

Waves was a New Zealand folk rock band that recorded a top-selling self-titled album in 1975 before disbanding in 1977. Its lineup emerged from an acoustic trio, Rosewood, which originally included Geoff Chunn, who later joined Split Enz. Despite making only sporadic live appearances—one of which was a double billing shared with Split Enz—their singles gained major airplay on Auckland radio and the Waves album reached No.7 on the New Zealand album charts, later becoming a sought-after collector's item.

The album, which became a sought-after collectors item on vinyl, was re-released in 2013 on vinyl and CD with a bonus disc, Misfit, a previously unreleased album recorded by the band in 1976.
Murray Neville Thom is a New Zealand businessman and music producer. He is best known for his collaboration with pianist Carl Doy, which resulted in their Together 10-CD collection being featured as one of Oprah's Favorite Things of 2002. Locally, his production company, Thom Productions is best known for the 12× platinum Great New Zealand Songbook and The Great New Zealand Cookbook, which have also been released in numerous versions for other countries.
