History
Casemate Publishers was established in 2001, when Combined Publishing‘s US operations were sold to Perseus Books Group [2] and rolled into its Da Capo imprint. [3] The running of their distribution operation was taken over by Combined Publishing’s sales director David Farnsworth, who created new distribution company Casemate Publishers and Book Distributors LLC. Casemate began distributing books in North America for publishers, specializing in military history. The company also began to publish its own military history books and since 2001 has expanded its publishing output to 75 book titles a year.
In July 2007, Casemate supported a management buyout of the Greenhill Books/Chatham Publishing distribution operation and sales team from Lionel Leventhal Ltd and set up a new company, Casemate UK Ltd. [4] [5] As a result, Casemate UK became responsible for the sales, marketing, and distribution of a number of military history and art book publishers.
In December 2011, Casemate UK's parent company, Casemate Publishers Ltd, bought leading archaeology publisher and bookseller Oxbow Books, [6] together with its US operation, The David Brown Book Company, from its founder, David Brown, on his retirement. Oxbow was founded in Oxford in the UK in 1983, and is still based there. Oxbow Books currently publishes 80 books a year. With the acquisition of Oxbow Books, Casemate also acquired Oxbow's North American distribution arm, The David Brown Company, which was founded in 1991. In 2013 The David Brown Book Company was rebranded as Casemate Academic. Casemate Academic provides specialist sales, marketing, and distribution to leading institutions and publishers from around the world in the US market.
In 2015, Casemate acquired International Publishers Marketing from Books International [7] and merged its existing Athena brand into a new division, Casemate IPM. [8] Casemate IPM is Casemate's general trade distribution arm. In 2019 Casemate acquired the distribution business of US-based Dufour Editions, [9] making Casemate IPM the largest distributor of books for Scottish, Irish, and Welsh publishers in the United States. Dufour continues to publish under its own imprint and is distributed by Casemate IPM.
Virgin Books is a British book publisher 90% owned by the publishing group Random House, and 10% owned by Virgin Group, the company originally set up by Richard Branson as a record company.
Bloomsbury Publishing plc is a British worldwide publishing house of fiction and non-fiction. It is a constituent of the FTSE SmallCap Index. Bloomsbury's head office is located in Bloomsbury, an area of the London Borough of Camden. It has a US publishing office located in New York City, an India publishing office in New Delhi, an Australia sales office in Sydney CBD and other publishing offices in the UK including in Oxford. The company's growth over the past two decades is primarily attributable to the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling and, from 2008, to the development of its academic and professional publishing division.
Hachette is a French publisher. Founded in 1826 by Louis Hachette as Brédif, the company later became L. Hachette et Compagnie, Librairie Hachette, Hachette SA and Hachette Livre in France. After acquiring an Australian publisher, Hachette Australia was created; in the UK it became Hachette UK, and its expansion into the United States became Hachette Book Group USA.
Macmillan Publishers is a British publishing company traditionally considered to be one of the 'Big Five' English language publishers. Founded in London in 1843 by Scottish brothers Daniel and Alexander MacMillan, the firm would soon establish itself as a leading publisher in Britain. It published two of the best-known works of Victorian era children’s literature, Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book (1894).

Hachette Book Group (HBG) is a publishing company owned by Hachette Livre, the largest publishing company in France, and the third largest trade and educational publisher in the world. Hachette Livre is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lagardère Group. HBG was formed when Hachette Livre purchased the Time Warner Book Group from Time Warner on March 31, 2006. Its headquarters are located at 1290 Avenue of the Americas, Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Hachette is considered one of the big-five publishing companies, along with Holtzbrinck/Macmillan, Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, and Simon & Schuster. In one year, HBG publishes approximately 1400+ adult books, 300 books for young readers, and 450 audio book titles. Angus & Robertson (A&R) is a major Australian bookseller, publisher and printer. As book publishers, A&R has contributed substantially to the promotion and development of Australian literature. This well known Australian brand currently exists as an online shop owned by online bookseller Booktopia. The Angus & Robertson imprint is still seen in books published by HarperCollins, a News Corporation company.

Perseus Books Group was an American publishing company founded in 1996 by investor Frank Pearl. Perseus acquired the trade publishing division of Addison-Wesley in 1997. It was named Publisher of the Year in 2007 by Publishers Weekly magazine for its role in taking on publishers formerly distributed by Publishers Group West and acquiring Avalon Publishing Group. After the death of Frank Pearl, Perseus was sold to Centre Lane Partners in 2015, a private equity firm. In April 2016, its name and publishing business was acquired by Hachette Book Group and its distribution business by Ingram Content Group.

Publishers Group West (PGW) is a book distributor founded in 1976 in Berkeley, California, which distributes to bookstores in the U.S. and internationally. They were the largest distributor of independent presses in the U.S. in the 1990s. In 2007, PGW was acquired by Perseus Books Group. They are the exclusive distributor for over 100 publishers. Some of their former publishers were picked up for direct distribution by Perseus Books Group and others in 2007. Periodic additions to their list of publishers include an additional 5 added in 2012. Within the book business, they are known for throwing a party at the annual BookExpo convention, with musical performers including Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk and Chaka Khan in 2012.
