Cembra Money Bank AG is a Swiss credit institution headquartered in Zurich-Altstetten. [2] Cembra operated under the name GE Money Bank until its IPO in early November 2013 and was part of the General Electric Group. Since November 2013, the credit institution has been listed on the Swiss stock exchange. Its main shareholders are currently Pictet, UBS Fund Management (Switzerland), and BlackRock Inc. [3]
Bank Prokredit was founded in 1912. In 1998, it came under the wing of GE Capital, which, the year before, had already acquired another Swiss consumer credit business, Bank Aufina, founded in 1953. It was not until 2006 that Prokredit, which had previously belonged to UBS, and Bank Aufina merged under the name GE Money Bank. [4] In the summer of 2013, GE Money Bank was to be sold to the Aduno Group, but the transaction fell through at the last moment. [5]
This was followed by the IPO as Cembra Money Bank AG in the fall of 2013. [6] The successful IPO is considered the first major IPO on the Swiss stock exchange in a long time. [7] The name Cembra is derived from the Latin name for the Swiss stone pine pinus cembra and symbolizes the brand values of Cembra. [6] In 2019, Cembra acquired cashgate AG from the Aduno Group. [8] In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020), accounts receivables dropped by 4% to CHF 6.3 billion. [9]
In spring 2023, Cembra launched the new business unit CembraPay and bundled its subsidiaries Swissbilling and Byjuno into it. The launch of the new brand was a further step in the expansion of the Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) business. [10]
Cembra offers products in the areas personal loans, leasing, credit cards, as well as savings market. [11] The bank conducts its business in all parts of Switzerland through a network of branches, its online presence as well as credit card partners, independent intermediaries and car dealers. [12] In July 2022 Cembra launched Certo!, its own credit card family. [13] All of the bank's cards can be used with Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Garmin Pay, Fitbit Pay, and SwatchPay! [14] [15]

Banking in Switzerland dates to the early 18th century through Switzerland's merchant trade and has, over the centuries, grown into a complex, regulated, and international industry. Banking is seen as emblematic of Switzerland. The country has a long history of banking secrecy and client confidentiality reaching back to the early 1700s. Starting as a way to protect wealthy European banking interests, Swiss banking secrecy was codified in 1934 with the passage of a landmark federal law, the Federal Act on Banks and Savings Banks. These laws, which were used to protect assets of persons being persecuted by Nazi authorities, have also been used by people and institutions seeking to illegally evade taxes, hide assets, or generally commit financial crime.
