Contents

The album varies from the vinyl version to the CD version but primarily consists of four 20-minute tracks which according to Wilson are "closest in style to previous albums such as Ghosts on Magnetic Tape and Loss, but looser in a way". [1] The album was recorded during the same sessions as Steven Wilson's second solo album Grace for Drowning , [2] and was used in place of an opening act for shows on the 2011-2012 Grace for Drowning tour.

The album was mixed differently for vinyl than CD versions in that the latter makes more use of rhythm, while the vinyl mix is more ambient. Even though both versions have different mixes, the track length of each track remains almost the same except for the second and final track, the former which runs about a minute, the latter which runs around 20 seconds longer than the CD version.

A double album is an audio album which spans two units of the primary medium in which it is sold, typically records and compact disc. A double album is usually, though not always, released as such because the recording is longer than the capacity of the medium. Recording artists often think of double albums as being a single piece artistically; however, there are exceptions such as John Lennon's Some Time in New York City and Pink Floyd's Ummagumma and OutKast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. Another example of this approach is Works Volume 1 by Emerson Lake and Palmer, where side one featured Keith Emerson, side two Greg Lake, side three Carl Palmer, and side four was by the entire group.

The album, along with Lightbulb Sun in 2000, represented a transitional period for the band, moving away from the band's earlier work in instrumental and psychedelic music, but before they took a more metal direction in 2002 onwards. The album takes a commercially accessible pop rock sound while still retaining heavy progressive rock influences.

A MegaMix is a remix containing multiple songs in rapid succession. It often features various artists, unlike a medley, which features one artist each. There may be only one verse or even just a brief chorus of each song used, sometimes in addition to samples of the same or other songs. It is common to use different samples to maintain and sometimes even ridicule the original. To unify the songs together smoothly, a single backing beat may be added as background throughout the megamix, although this is not a must. This backing beat is kept basic so as to simplify mixing and to not compete with the music. These mixes are usually several minutes long at minimum, going up to a half-hour or an hour, or even more sometimes.
