Central High School is a high school located in Aberdeen, South Dakota with an enrollment of 1,374 students. Since 2004, the school has been located at a new site located at 2200 South Roosevelt Street. The new location is on the outskirts of the southeast side of town.
The Thomas F. Kelley Theatre is the fine arts and multi-purpose venue. Golden Eagles Arena, the gymnasium, has hosted a number of South Dakota High School Activities Association state championship events. Golden Eagle Field [2] is an outdoor football field located on the Central High School Campus. The complex hosts both university and high school events in football, soccer, and track.
Central High School is committed to meeting all requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act and was honored with the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement achievement in math and science in 2008. This award is given to the top performing high school in the state of South Dakota.
Central High School ACT scores beat both national and state averages. The staff consists of over 100 people. Central students may earn college credit through the Rising Scholars Program or one of the many Advanced Placement opportunities available. Central High School partners with the Hub Area Vocational School to offer a large number of vocational learning experiences. [3]
Central athletic teams are nicknamed the Golden Eagles. The school competes in boys' football, basketball, wrestling, track, cross-country, tennis, golf, and newly added soccer. Girls compete in volleyball, basketball, track, cross country, gymnastics, tennis, golf, competitive cheer and dance, and soccer.

Central High School competes in the Eastern South Dakota Athletic Conference. Students can also participate in numerous clubs and activities on campus, including drama, band, chorus, speech and debate. [3]
Aberdeen Central has won 9 team state championships in Speech and Debate (2004, [4] 2006, [5] 2007, [6] 2009, [7] 2012, [8] 2013, [9] 2014, [10] 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, [11] the most of any school in South Dakota. [12] The 8 consecutive team state championships won from 2017-2024 marks the longest consecutive win streak in class AA SDHSAA history. [12]
Aberdeen Central was awarded the National Speech and Debate Association's Debate School of Excellence Award in 2014 and 2015, recognizing it as one of the top 20 debate schools in the nation. Aberdeen Central is 1 of only 3 schools (along with Bellaire High School of Texas & Durham Academy of North Carolina) to have ever won the award in back to back years. [13] [14]
Head Speech & Debate Coach Kerry Konda was awarded the National Speech & Debate Association’s James M. Copeland High School Coach of the Year award in 2024. [15]
Students from Aberdeen Central compete in all events sanctioned by the South Dakota High School Activities Association and National Speech and Debate Association including: Policy Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Original Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking, Oral Interpretation, and Student Congress. Aberdeen Central has won the state championship in Policy Debate four times (1965, 1997, 2008, [17] 2010 [18] ). [12]

The National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) is the largest interscholastic speech and debate organization serving middle school and high school students in the United States. It was formed as the National Forensic League in 1925 by Bruno Ernst Jacob.
Albuquerque Academy, known locally as simply the Academy, is an independent, co-educational day school for grades 6-12 located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Extemporaneous Speaking is a speech delivery style/speaking style, and a term that identifies a specific forensic competition. The competition is a speech event based on research and original analysis, done with a limited-preparation; in the United States those competitions are held for high school and college students. In a Extemporaneous Speech competition, enrolled participants prepare for thirty minutes on a question related to current events and then give a seven-minute speech responding to that question. The extemporaneous speaking delivery style, referred to as "off-the-cuff", is a type of delivery method for a public presentation, that was carefully prepared and practiced but not memorized.

The Texas Forensic Association (TFA) is an organization that provides and regulates competition in speech and debate (forensics) for Texas high school students. The association authorizes forensics competitions nearly every weekend in Texas for the duration of the forensics season, which lasts from early August until the end of February, with the State competition typically in the first or second week of March.
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is an association that regulates competition of interscholastic sports and some interscholastic activities at the high school level for the state of Illinois. It is a charter member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Martin J. Jackley is an American attorney and politician who is currently serving as the Attorney General of South Dakota since 2023, having previously served from 2009 to 2019. He assumed office as Attorney General again in 2023 after winning the 2022 election unopposed. He previously served as the 39th United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. He ran unsuccessfully for Governor of South Dakota in 2018, losing the Republican primary to Kristi Noem.
Logan Storley is an American professional mixed martial artist and folkstyle wrestler. He currently competes in the welterweight division of the Professional Fighters League (PFL). He is a former interim Bellator Welterweight World Champion. As a folkstyle wrestler, he was a four-time NCAA Division I All-American for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and a six-time SDHSAA state champion as a high schooler.
