Central Reserve is a cricket and Australian rules football ground in the suburb of Glen Waverley, in the south-east of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located at the intersection between Waverley Rd and Springvale Rd. It is the current home of the Monash Tigers in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition and it is also the current home of Mazenod Old Collegians Football Club, who currently play in the VAFA, in Premier B. And Glen Waverley Hawks Football Club currently playing in the EFL Division 4.
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 20-metre (22-yard) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at the wicket with the bat, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this and dismiss each player. Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground. When ten players have been dismissed, the innings ends and the teams swap roles. The game is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a third umpire and match referee in international matches. They communicate with two off-field scorers who record the match's statistical information.
Australian rules football, officially known as Australian football, or simply called Aussie rules, football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of eighteen players on an oval-shaped field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval-shaped ball between goal posts or between goal and behind posts.
Glen Waverley is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 19 km south-east of Melbourne's central business district in the local government area of the City of Monash. At the 2016 Census, Glen Waverley had a population of 40,327.
Since the 1970s, the ground has been used by three separate Victorian District/Premier Cricket clubs. In the 1974/75 season, the Waverley Cricket Club was elevated from sub-district cricket to district cricket, and it played at Central Reserve until the 1989/90 season, when it merged with the sub-district Dandenong Cricket Club and moved to Shepley Oval, Dandenong. [1] The same year, the Hawthorn-East Melbourne Cricket Club moved to Central Reserve from its home ground at Glenferrie Oval, where the Hawthorn Football Club sought year-round use of the venue, and became known as Hawthorn-Waverley; the club played there until 2003-04, when it merged with the sub-district Monash University Cricket Club, became known as Hawthorn-Monash University, and moved to the oval at the university's Clayton campus. [2] Finally, in late 2010, the Richmond Cricket Club moved its home base from its traditional home at Punt Road Oval, Richmond, to Central Reserve, after a decade-long impasse with the Richmond Football Club over the use of the field during summer; [3] the club changed its trading name to Monash Tigers in 2013-14. Victorian Premier Cricket is a club cricket competition in the state of Victoria administered by Cricket Victoria. Each club fields four teams of adult players and usually play on weekends and public holidays. Matches are played on turf wickets under limited-time rules, with most results being decided on a first-innings basis. Outstanding players in the competition are selected to play for the Victorian Bushrangers at first-class and List A level, in the Sheffield Shield and Marsh One Day Cup competitions respectively. The competition commenced in the 1906–07 season when it was known as "District cricket", and was renamed in 1990. Separate competitions for one-day matches (2002–03) and Twenty20 (2005–06) were later established.
The Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA) is a turf cricket competition based in Melbourne, Australia. There are 28 clubs each fielding four teams plus an under 15 team in the annual J.G Craig shield competition, which is regarded as the premier competition for the future of Victorian cricket. There are four divisions. In first and second grade these divisions rotate annually to ensure every club plays each other at least once every three years. In third and fourth division these do not change and the two 'leagues' are South-East and North-West.
The Dandenong Cricket Club is an Australian cricket club based in Dandenong, Victoria, an outer-city suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. They play in Victorian Premier Cricket, the highest competition in the state.
The ground has hosted one top level match: a List A tour match between Victoria and the touring Sri Lankans in the 2005/06 season. [5] Victoria won the game by 7 wickets, thanks to five wickets from Allan Wise during the Sri Lankans innings of 120 all out. Michael Klinger then scored 51 not out alongside Andrew McDonald who scored 45 not out, with Victoria reaching 3/121. [6]
List A cricket is a classification of the limited-overs (one-day) form of the sport of cricket. List A cricket includes One Day International (ODI) matches and various domestic competitions in which the number of overs in an innings per team ranges from forty to sixty, as well as some international matches involving nations who have not achieved official ODI status. Together with first-class and Twenty20 cricket, List A is one of the three major forms of cricket recognised by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The Victoria cricket team, who were named Victorian Bushrangers between 1995 and 2018, is an Australian first-class cricket team based in Melbourne, Victoria. The Victoria cricket team, which first played in 1851, represents the state of Victoria in the Sheffield Shield first-class competition and the Marsh One Day Cup competition. The team shares home matches between the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Junction Oval.
The Sri Lanka national men's cricket team, nicknamed The Lions, represents Sri Lanka in international cricket. It is a Full Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with Test, One-Day International (ODI) and T20 International (T20I) status. The team first played international cricket in 1926–27, and were later awarded Test status in 1982, which made Sri Lanka the eighth Test cricket playing nation. The team is administered by Sri Lanka Cricket.
The ground was also prominent as the home ground of the Waverley Football Club, which played in the Victorian Football Association from 1961 until 1987, and before that as the Glen Waverley Football Club in the Caulfield-Oakleigh District League. [7] The oval and pavilion were upgraded in 1962 to bring it up to VFA standards, forcing the club to play its home games on the northern half of the wider Central Reserve for that season; a covered standing shelter was constructed in the mid-1960s, and the main grandstand was opened in 1969. Waverley Football Club, nicknamed the Panthers, was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1961 until 1987. Waverley wore red and black as their club colours and was based at Central Reserve in the Melbourne suburb of Glen Waverley.
The wider Central Reserve area contains two football/cricket ovals, a skate park, a playground, and various other facilities. The main oval, used for premier cricket, is the northern oval.
