Founded in 1821, it is the principal city of the three-county Columbia metropolitan area. It is Missouri's fourth most populous with an estimated 128,555 residents in 2022.

It was named for local businessman William F. West, who donated money and land to the school district. The school prides itself in the amount of scholarships given out yearly.
