The Centre for Internet and Society (CIS) is a Bengaluru-based non-profit multidisciplinary research organization. [2] [3] [4] CIS works on digital pluralism, public accountability and pedagogic practices, in the field of the Internet and Society.

Wikimedia Projects

The Wikimedia Foundation granted a project to CIS to promote and support the Indic language Wikimedia’s Indic language free knowledge projects, including Wikipedia in Indic languages and English. The grant is also aimed to support wider distribution of Wikimedia’s free knowledge within India. The award amount for the first year of the two-year project was Rs. 11 million (US $200,000). [5]

Swatantra 2014

CIS supported and participated in Swatantra 2014, the fifth international free software conference event, organized at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala from 18 to 20 December 2014.[ citation needed ]

The Bengali Wikipedia or Bangla Wikipedia is the Bengali language edition of Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia. Launched on 27 January 2004, it surpassed 10,000 articles in October 2006, becoming the second South-Asian language to do so. On 25 December 2020, the site achieved the milestone of 100,000 articles. As of 30 November 2024, the Bengali Wikipedia has 160,409 articles. Though, it joined later compared to top Wikipedias, it ranks 5th in terms of article depth among 318 active wikipedias by language.

WikiConference India is a national Wikipedia conference organised in India. The first WikiConference India conference was held in November 2011, in Mumbai, the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It was organised by the Mumbai Wikipedia community in partnership with Wikimedia India Chapter with the support of the Wikimedia Foundation. The conference is positioned as the annual national flagship event for Wikimedia in India and is open to participation from citizens of all nations. WikiConference India 2023 took place in Hyderabad from 28 to 30 April 2023. Wikiconference India 2025 is in the planning phase.

MOHAN Foundation is a not-for-profit, registered non-government charity organisation in India that works in the field of deceased organ donation and transplantation. MOHAN is an acronym for Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network.

Swatantra 2014 was the fifth international free software conference organized by the International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS), an autonomous organization set up by the Government of Kerala, India for the propagation of FOSS. It was held in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India during 18–20 December 2014. Among supporting organizations of the conference were the Free Software Foundation of India, Centre for Internet and Society (India), Software Freedom Law Center (India) and Swathantra Malayalam Computing.

Konkani Wikipedia is the Konkani language edition of Wikipedia, run by Wikimedia Foundation. It was started in July 2015. Prior to this, it had been in incubation since 2006. Currently, there are 3,604 content articles in the project. The total number of edits on this Wikipedia is 212,633.

The state of Kerala, in India has had an active Free software community since early 1980s. The initial users were those who started using TeX in the city of Thiruvananthapuram. Subsequently Free software users groups were formed in some of the different cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and around engineering colleges in the state. The Free software community in Kerala was instrumental in creating a policy environment at the state government level that was biased towards Free software. The government of Kerala policy on Free software gives first preference to Free and Open Source software for its IT requirements. The state claims to be the only state in the world where IT education is imparted over a Free software operating system.

The Tulu Wikipedia is the Tulu language edition of Wikipedia, run by the Wikimedia Foundation. It currently has 2,414 articles and it is the 253rd largest edition of Wikipedia by article count. It is the 23rd language of India to get a Wikipedia after eight years in incubation.

He was formerly an endowed professor at ArtEZ University of Arts and the co-founder and executive director of the Centre for Internet and Society. He is a board member of Open Society Foundations. and an honorary steward at Shuttleworth Foundation. He joined Facebook in October 2020 to lead their Public Policy division in India.
