The Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS), New Delhi, India is an autonomous think tank on strategic studies and land warfare. The mandate of CLAWS covers national security issues, conventional military operations and sub-conventional warfare. [1] CLAWS is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and is a membership-based organisation. It is governed by a Board of Governors and an Executive Council. Research at CLAWS is futuristic in outlook and policy-oriented in approach. CLAWS disseminate the products of its research to its members, members of the armed forces, decision makers, members of the strategic community and interested civilians. It also seeks to contribute to developing a pro-active strategic culture for India. [2] The objective of the organization is to convey policy recommendations based on interactions, consensus and research projects to policymakers and experts. CLAWS has been ranked 171th amongst World Top Defence and National Security Think Tanks as per '2020 Global Go To Think Tank Report' published by University of Pennsylvania, USA. [3]

Vision

The motto of CLAWS is "Victory through Vision". It encapsulates the founding idea of employing academic and practical research to provide actionable knowledge to the strategic community of India and the world.

The vision of CLAWS is to join leading international think tanks in conceptualizing various aspects of land warfare, with special focus for India and its extended neighborhood. CLAWS aspires to attract leading strategic thinkers, defense analysts, scholars and academicians and media persons to deliberate on all facets of land warfare at all levels. [4]

Areas of interest

The mandate of CLAWS [5] covers national security issues, conventional military operations and sub-conventional warfare. The Centre also focuses on conflicts in the region and military developments in countries within India's strategic frontiers, particularly those in the South Asian region. CLAWS team comprises serving and retired defence personnel from all services, civilian experts and support staff. [23]

Activities

CLAWS is involved in primary and secondary research which is qualitative and quantitative in nature. [24] The topics are contemporary and security oriented [25] having a bearing on India's national security and interests. On its website, CLAWS publishes research articles [26] and reports on workshops, conferences, round-table discussions and guest lectures. [27] [28] [29] The organisation undertakes research projects [30] on national security-related issues, especially those pertaining to land warfare.

Major publications

CLAWS conducts research that is futuristic in outlook and policy-oriented in approach. CLAWS follows a set of publication guidelines in terms of types, content, language, design and printing.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Indian Armed Forces</span> Combined military forces of India

The Indian Armed Forces are the military forces of the Republic of India. It consists of three professional uniformed services: the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. Additionally, the Indian Armed Forces are supported by the Central Armed Police Forces, Indian Coast Guard and Special Frontier Force and various inter-service commands and institutions such as the Strategic Forces Command, the Andaman and Nicobar Command and the Integrated Defence Staff. The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces but the executive authority and responsibility for national security is vested in the Prime Minister of India and their chosen Cabinet Ministers. The Indian Armed Forces are under the management of the Ministry of Defence of the Government of India. The Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (MP-IDSA), New Delhi, is India's foremost think tank for advanced research in international relations, especially defence, strategic and security issues, and providing training to civilian, military and paramilitary officers of the Indian government. It is funded by the Indian Ministry of Defence but operates as a non-partisan and autonomous body. It aims to promote national and international security by carrying out research on defence and security-related issues and disseminating the knowledge among the policy-makers and wider public.

Dipankar Banerjee is a retired major general of the Indian Army based in India. He is the founding director of the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies.

The National Defence University (NDU), formerly introduced as Army War Course (1963–70), the National Defence College (1970–2007), is the military university with additional status of public university of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan focused on military education and training for the armed forces, including Pakistan military forces and two hundred foreign participants. Formerly established on 28 May 1970 at Rawalpindi, its academic principles are focused on command instructions, national security, military strategy, and war studies among other specified academic disciplines. The Directorate of Army Research and Analysis (DARA) is a branch of the Australian Army Headquarters and serves as the Army’s think tank. DARA is part of the Army's Modernisation and Strategic Plans division, and is located in Russell Offices, Canberra. DARA provides research and analysis to the Australian Army and Government to support the Army’s modernisation and strategic planning. DARA also promotes professional debate on topics such as the changing character of land warfare and Australia’s strategic environment.

Indian Defence University is a defence service university set up for the affiliation of training academies of union government defence servants working under the Government of India. These union government defence servants can collectively be termed as generalist branch and specialist branch of the Indian Military. It is not to be confused with the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) which is focused on the police and para-military Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), whereas IDU is focused on the military. It is located at Binola village in Gurugram district of Haryana state in India that is being built. It is proposed to be one of the Institutes of National Importance (INIs).

Air Commodore Jasjit Singh, AVSM, VrC, VM was an Indian Air Force officer, writer and military strategist. In his military career, he was awarded the Vir Chakra during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. He last served as the Director of Operations of the IAF.

The Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS) is a think tank analysing issues related to national security, defence, and aerospace issues in the evolving strategic and international security environment. It was established as a research think tank on 15 September 2001, under an independent, non-profit, non-governmental trust registered in New Delhi titled "Forum for National Security Studies", officially registered under the existing regulations in New Delhi U/S 12 A of the IT Act in April 2002 and took over responsibilities for governing as the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS).

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Indian Armed Forces Tri-Service Commands</span>

Integrated Theatre Commands of the Indian Armed Forces are varying degrees of synergy and cross–service cooperation between the military wings of the Indian Armed Forces. Following Independence, in 1949 a joint educational framework was set up starting with the first tri-service academy in the world, the National Defence Academy, and over the years this joint educational framework has been expanded to bring officers from the different services together at different stages of their careers.

Informationised war is a combination of and evolution in warfare from pre-existing ones such as network-centric, cyber, psychological, electronic and information warfare, and integrating all the "opportunities and technologies provided by the Information Age" into all domains, systems and aspects of modern warfare. China's Defense White Papers of 2004, 2006, 2015, and 2019 all emphasis and discuss "informationization" of its military; the country aims for a fully "informationised" force by 2049.

The Concept of Active Defence in China's Military Strategyis a book authored by Amrita Jash, an assistant professor in the Department of Geopolitics and International Relations at Manipal Academy of Higher Education. The book describes the core national interests of China along with its strategic intentions and military capabilities. It describes 'The Science of Military Strategy' (SMS), one of the main doctrinal military publications of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China on the study of war, and the directions of the current Chinese military strategy.

Aminul Karim is a retired lieutenant general of the Bangladesh Army. He served as the military secretary to the president of Bangladesh, Iajuddin Ahmed. He was a senior research fellow at the Asia Europe Institute, University of Malaya.
