The Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) is an Indian research institute that works with the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. [1] [2]

History

The Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) was established in 1991 by Sivaramakrishna Chandrasekhar. In 2021, Dr BLV Prasad appointed as director. [3]

Research activities

Materials research

CeNS was involved in materials research, encompassing various length scales. exploration of a wide range of materials, metal and semiconductor nanostructures, liquid crystals, gels, membranes, and hybrid materials. CeNS made contributions to addressing the challenges posed by COVID-19 in India. [4]

Electrochromic smart window

In 2022, CeNS engineered a polymeric electrochromic smart window, [5] as an alternative to costly conventional smart windows in contemporary architectural structures. [6]

The Hyderabad Multi-Modal Transport System, commonly abbreviated as MMTS, is a suburban rail system in Hyderabad, India. A joint venture of the Government of Telangana and the South Central Railway, it is operated by the latter. The 90-kilometre (56 mi) system operates to cater the city of Hyderabad and the neighbouring suburban areas connecting Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Falaknuma, Lingampally, Medchal and Umdanagar with a total of 133 MMTS services. Currently 86 MMTS services are being operated due to the effect of COVID-19.

Onkar Nath Srivastava was an Indian material physicist, an Emeritus professor of Banaras Hindu University and the vice president for India and South Asia of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, who was known for his contributions to the disciplines of nanotechnology and hydrogen energy. He was the author of two books and over 440 scientific papers and a recipient of several honors including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Indian award in the science and technology categories. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to science and engineering.

Delia J. Milliron is the T. Brockett Hudson Professor in Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Milliron leads a research team that focuses on developing and studying the properties of new electronic nanomaterials. Her team pursues studies on nanocrystals, nanoscale interfaces, and controlled assemblies of nanocrystals. Her team takes a systematic approach towards elucidating effects that arise at the nanoscale with a special focus on structure-property relationships.

DRDO Young Scientist Laboratories (DYSLs) are five specialised research laboratories located in five different cities of India, inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India on 2 January 2020. Each laboratory deals with a focused area of science - artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, cognitive technologies, asymmetric technologies and smart materials. The labs are located in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. As per the norms laid out, everyone, including director, at the labs is under 35 years of age. DRDO Chairman G.Satheesh Reddy conveyed to The Hindu on 3 January 2020 that the laboratories are formally operational.

National Quantum Mission India is an initiative by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to foster quantum technologies related scientific and industrial research and development to accelerate economic growth to establish India as a global leader in quantum technology and applications and support national Digital India, Make India, Skill India and Sustainable development goals.
