Chalakudy taluk

Chalakudy taluk comes under Irinjalakuda Revenue Division of Thrissur district in Kerala, India. It is one of the 77 taluks of Kerala. Chalakudy taluk was formed in the year 2013 by the UDF Government, led by Oommen Chandy. 31 villages from the former subdistrict of Mukundapuram taluk form the new subdistrict. [1]

History

Up to AD 1762 Chalakudy and surrounding areas were part of Kodassery nadu. In 1762AD Cochin Maharajah formed Kodassery taluk by adding some other desoms[ what language is this? ] from nearby nadus.[ what language is this? ] In 1860 AD this taluk was abolished and parts were amalgamated into Mukundapuram and Kanayannur taluks. In December 2013 new Chalakudy taluk was formed by bifurcating Mukundapuram Taluk.

Chalakudy lies on National Highway 544 and located about 47 km (23 mi) north of the city of Kochi, and 30 km (19 mi) south of Thrissur.

Chalakudy River or Chalakudy Puzha is the fifth longest river in Kerala, India. The river flows through Thrissur district, Palakkad district and Ernakulam district of Kerala. The total drainage area of the river is 1704 km2. Out of this, 1404 km2 lies in Kerala and the rest in Tamil Nadu. The length of the river is 145.5 km. Though Chalakudy River in strict geological sense is a tributary of the Periyar river, for all practical purposes it is treated as a separate river by Government and other agencies. The river has gained its name since it flows along the banks of the Chalakudy Town, the major settlement along the course of the river. It is perhaps the most unpolluted and pristine river in the state and even in India due to the limited amount of industries and wastage disposal around it. Chalakudy River and its basin area were one of the most affected rivers during the 2018 Kerala floods.

Puthenvelikara is a village at North end of the Ernakulam district, situated in the Paravur Taluk of Kerala, India. The Chalakkudy River merges with the Periyar River at Elenthikara in the village of Puthenvelikkara. Puthenvelikkara is on the banks of the river Periyar, Chalakudy and Kottapuram lagoon. It is a centre of agricultural production in the region with its many rice paddy fields.
