The Chalands de débarquement d'infanterie et de chars (CDIC) were two tank landing ships that operated in the French Navy. They were designed to operate from landing platform dock ships such as the Foudre class, or for coastal support. The two ships of the class, Rapière and Hallebarde, entered service in 1988 and 1989 respectively and were initially named CDIC 9061 and CDIC 9062 before receiving their new names in 1997. In 2011 Rapière was among a package of four ships sold to the Chilean Navy and renamed Canave.
The CDIC landing craft were improved versions of the Engin de débarquement d'infanterie et de chars (EDIC) vessels that had been constructed from the 1950s to the 1980s. [1] They were designed to work with the Foudre-class landing platform dock ships of the French Navy and take infantry and vehicles from the landing platforms to the shore. [2] The landing craft can also be used for coastal transport., [3] The CDIC vessels have a standard displacement of 390 tonnes (380 long tons ) and 760 tonnes (750 long tons) at full load. They are 59.4 metres (194 ft 11 in) long with a beam of 11.9 metres (39 ft 1 in) and a maximum draught of 1.8 metres (5 ft 11 in). The two landing craft are powered by two SACM Uni Diesel UD 30 V12 M1 diesel engines driving two shafts rated at 890 kilowatts (1,200 hp ). The CDIC have a maximum speed of 10.5 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph) and a range of 1,000 nmi (1,900 km; 1,200 mi) at 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph). The two ships have capacity for 350 t (340 long tons) of stores and room for 230 personnel. They have a complement of 18 including one officer. They mount two 20 mm modèle F2 guns and two 12.7 mm (0.5 in) machine guns. The wheelhouse can be lowered so that the vessels can dock more easily. [2]

Two CDIC ships were ordered for construction by SFCN at Villeneuve-la-Garenne, France, the same site as the last two EDIC vessels had been constructed. There had been more planned orders but delays with the Foudre class prevented any of them being placed. [1] Initially named CDIC 9061 [3] and CDIC 9062, [4] the two landing craft were commissioned on 28 July 1988 and 2 March 1989. [2] They were given their new names of Rapière and Halleberde on 21 July 1997. [3] [4] On 23 December 2011 Rapière was sold along with Foudre and the chaland de transport de matériel CTM 19 and CTM 24 to the Chilean Navy. [5] Rapière was renamed Canave in Chilean service. [6] Beginning in 2013, Halleberde was used to supply the Île du Levant, an island in the Mediterranean Sea off Toulon. On 4 September 2014, Halleberde was taken out of service and placed in a state of ready reserve with the Amphibious Flotilla. [7]
The LCM-8 is a river boat and mechanized landing craft used by the United States Navy and Army during the Vietnam War and subsequent operations. They are currently used by governments and private organizations throughout the world. The acronym stands for "Landing Craft Mechanized, Mark 8".
The Ouragan class was a series of French landing platform docks operated by the Marine Nationale. They were designated Transport de chalands de débarquement (TCD) in French service. The Ouragan class was the first series of landing platform docks designed and constructed by France. The two ships entered service in the late 1960s and both ships saw service in the Pacific Ocean as part of the French nuclear programme. They were initially intended to be replaced by the Foudre-class landing platform docks in the 1990s. However, due to delays, they were kept in service until they were replaced by the Mistral-class amphibious assault ships in the 2000s. A possible sale to Argentina fell through after concerns of asbestos arose. Both ships were taken out of service in 2007 and were scrapped in Belgium in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
The Mistral class is a class of five landing helicopter docks built by France. Also known as helicopter carriers, and referred to as "projection and command ships" and "porte-hélicoptères amphibie" (PHA) since 2019, a Mistral-class ship is capable of transporting and deploying 16 NH90 or Tiger helicopters, four landing craft, up to 70 vehicles including 13 Leclerc tanks, or a 40-strong Leclerc tank battalion, and 450 soldiers. The ships are equipped with a 69-bed hospital, and are capable of serving as part of a NATO Response Force, or with United Nations or European Union peace-keeping forces.
A Landing Craft Utility (LCU) is a type of boat used by amphibious forces to transport equipment and troops to the shore. They are capable of transporting tracked or wheeled vehicles and troops from amphibious assault ships to beachheads or piers.
The Force d'action navale is the 9,600-man and about 100-ship force of surface warships of the French Navy. As of August 2023, it is commanded by L’amiral Nicolas Vaujour.
The Foudre-class landing platform dock is a class of landing platform docks designed and constructed for the French Navy. Designated Transport de Chalands de Débarquement, they were intended to replace the ageing Ouragan class and the construction of four vessels was planned. Only two were built and the remaining two were instead reordered as Mistral-class amphibious assault ships. The two ships of the Foudre class, Foudre and Siroco, operated with the French Navy between 1990 and 2014. Replaced by the Mistrals, in 2011 Foudre was sold to the Chilean Navy and Siroco was sold to the Brazilian Navy in 2015.
ARA Patagonia (B-1) is a multi-product replenishment oiler of the Durance class in service in the Argentine Navy. She was the lead ship of her class serving in the French Navy as Durance from 1977 to 1999. In French service, the ship served with the Force d'action navale. In Argentine service the vessel is used in multi-national naval exercises and supplies the Antarctic missions operating from Ushuaia. In 2017, Patagonia was used to search for the missing submarine ARA San Juan.
The T 47 class or Surcouf class were the first destroyers built for the French Navy after the Second World War. Twelve ships were built between 1955 and 1957. The ships were modernised in the 1960s and decommissioned in the 1980s, when they were replaced by the Cassard and Georges Leygues-class frigates. The class was authorised in 1949 and were designed as aircraft carrier escort vessels. Three were modified to become flagships, four became anti-air guided missile destroyers and five became anti-submarine destroyers. One member of the class survives, Maillé-Brézé as a museum ship at Nantes.
The San Giorgio class are amphibious transport docks (LPD) built by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy. These ships can carry a battalion of troops, and up to 36 armored vehicles. The stern floodable dock can accommodate three landing craft. The ships are based at the Brindisi naval base on the Adriatic coast.
Foudre was an amphibious assault ship of the Marine Nationale, the twelfth vessel to bear the name, and lead ship of the Foudre-class landing platform docks. In December 2011 the vessel was sold to the Chilean Navy and renamed Sargento Aldea.

Dixmude (L9015) is an amphibious assault ship, a type of helicopter carrier, of the French Navy. She is the third vessel to bear the name, and is the third ship of the Mistral class.
The EDIC or Engin de débarquement d'infanterie et de chars are large landing craft that operate in the French Navy, Lebanese Navy, Senegalese Navy, and Madagascar Navy. EDICs have the typical landing craft utility design with a bow ramp and have a large aft superstructure compared to the derivative CDIC. The EDIC vessels were constructed in three groups, the first were launched in 1958, the second in 1967–1969 and the third in 1987. A sub class, called the Engin de débarquement ateliers or EDA was constructed between the first and second groups but were fitted out as repair craft. In French service, they predominantly were used in the French Pacific territories.
Kalaat Beni Abbes (L-474) is an amphibious transport dock of the Algerian National Navy. The ship built by the Italian firm Fincantieri as an enlarged and improved version of the San Giorgio class. The ship measures 143 metres (469 ft) long and 21.5 metres (71 ft) wide.
The Chaland de transport de matériel (CTM) is a French landing craft class, also operated by the navies of Chile, Djibouti, Ivory Coast, Morocco and Senegal. The design is based on the American LCM-8-class landing craft and were initially ordered to support France's nuclear testing in the Pacific. Constructed in two batches, the first batch of 16 vessels have been removed from French service with some transferred to other navies, the others being discarded. The second batch consisting of 17 vessels is split, with some being transferred to other nations and some remaining in service with the French Navy. The remaining vessels in French service are being replaced with a new landing craft design. As of January 2023, it was reported that only five of the landing craft remained in French Navy service.
Bougainville was a French landing platform dock and an intelligence vessel ordered on behalf of French nuclear experimentation centers. The ship was constructed by Chantiers Dubigeon shipyard at Nantes and completed by Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint Nazaire. Bougainville was launched on 28 January 1986 and commissioned on 25 June 1988. During the bulk of its career, it was used for transportation for French nuclear tests in Polynesia or humanitarian aid. In the latter half its career, the vessel was converted for signals intelligence and was replaced by Dupuy de Lôme in 2006. Bougainville was decommissioned in 2008 and used as part of the breakwater for the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. The ship was sold for scrap in 2018.
