Chanda Jha also known as Kavi Chandra was the first poet who wrote Ramayana in Maithili language. The version of Ramayana written by him is known as Maithili Bhasha Ramayana. [1]

Early life

He was born at Pindaruckh village of Darbhanga district in the Mithila region of Bihar, India on 20 January 1831 AD. In his childhood he went to his maternal village Baragama at maternal grandfather Pandit Girivera Narayan Jha. There he studied in traditional manner and become well versed in grammar and literature. Similarly in his earlier time, he became poetic genius. After that he went to Gandhavari village at the home of Vasudeva Singh a step brother of Maheshwar Singh of Darbhanga Raj. There he studied for nearly five years under the patron of Vasudeva Singh. [2]

Influence

He was a great scholar of Sanskrit, Maithili and Hindi.His compilation, revision and encouragement remains relevant in many ways. He became popular for his text Maithili Bhasha Ramayana. Six years ago the speakers at a memorial day celebration organised by Kavivar Chanda Jha Vichar Sah Seva Sansthan, expressed the idea of naming streets, buildings, institutes, hospitals, libraries, railway stations, roads with his name along with his statue. [3] Similarly every year on Maghi Saptami, Chanda Jha memorial function is held by the Chanda Jha Memorial Conservation Committee at Chanda Jha Smarak Sthal in Andhrathadhi. The function starts with wreath laying ceremony on the statue of the poet Chanda Jha. In the function, the works and personality of the poet is discussed among audience there. It is said that after the poet Vidyapati, Chanda Jha has been the brightest star in the sky of Maithili literature. He immortalized Mithila, Maithili and Maithili literature in the world with his outstanding work. [4]

Works

He wrote many texts for the preservation and promotion of Maithili. He published 19 books. His major works are Maithili Bhasha Ramayana, Ahilya Charitra, Ras Kaumudi, Vidyapati Pad Sankalan, Chhandograntha, Rajavali, Geet Saptashati, Maheshvani and Geet Sudha, etc. [3] He did many researches and creative works in areas of literature. He was appointed as the head of literature department at Darbhanga Raj. [2]

Vidyapati, also known by the sobriquet Maithil Kavi Kokil, was a Maithili and Sanskrit polymath-poet-saint, playwright, composer, biographer, philosopher, law-theorist, writer, courtier and royal priest. He was a devotee of Shiva, but also wrote love songs and devotional Vaishnava songs. He had knowledge of, and composed works in Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsha and Maithili.

Surendra Jha 'Suman', also referred to as 'Suman Ji' or Acharya Surendra Jha 'Suman', was a Maithili poet, writer, publisher, editor and elected member of legislative assembly and parliament. He is also known for his role as publisher, editor, journalist, social and cultural reformer and promoter of Mithila culture. He authored about forty books in Maithili and was also the Editor of various publications and books in Maithili, Sanskrit and Hindi. He served the Governing Bodies of various literary and academic institutions in different capacities in his State. He was also the recipient of Sahitya Akademy Award in 1971 for Payaswini and in 1995 for Translation Rabindra Natakavali Vol. I. He was born in a village known as Ballipur in the Samastipur district of Bihar.

Ramesh Chandra Jha(8 May 1928 – 7 April 1994) was an Indian poet, novelist and freedom fighter. Son of a senior gandhian and freedom fighter Lakshmi Narayan Jha, who also contributed in Indian Freedom Struggle from Bihar. His maternal grandson Sanjeev K Jha is well-known Screenwriter who is working in Indian film industry. Ramesh Chandra Jha's poems, ghazals and stories evoke patriotism and human values. Romanticism and struggle of life are also important aspects of his writing. His poetry expresses concerns of people's life struggle, their dreams and hopes.

Mithila Student Union (MSU) (Maithili : मिथिला स्टूडेंट यूनियन) is a non-political student organisation whose sole purpose is the development of Mithila and Maithils living in India. It is one of the largest student organisations in Bihar. It is a registered organization under the provisions of the Societies Registration Act, 1860 under the Indian constitution. Anup Maithil is the founder president of Mithila Student Union. They mostly keep Mithila Art Boarded Maroon Gamchha on their Sholder which is the Symbol of Passion, Love, Bravery and Courage.

Baliraajgadh is an archaeological site located at Babubarhi block in Madhubani district of Mithila region of Bihar state in India. The site is locally known as Raja Bali ka Garh. The site was first sighted and identified by George Grierson, the then subdivisional officer of Darbhanga in 1884 AD. It is among the three important archeological sites Balirajgarh fort, Telhara and Nalanda in the state of Bihar in India. The site of Balirajgarh is greater than the site of Vikramshila and Vaishali but it has not yet been developed as a tourist place. Balirajgarh Fort is located on the territory of Mithila, 7 kilometers east of Kamlabalan River and 35 kilometers west of Kosi River. It has been claimed by some scholars to be the location of the ancient city of Mithila. The headquarter of the Ancient Mithila University was at the court of King Janaka in Mithila. Therefore, Balirajgadh is also the possible site of the Ancient Mithila University. It is the place from where most of the schools of the ancient Indian philosophy emerged. Nyaya Shastra, Logical sciences, Samkhya Shastra, Mimansa Shastra and many more Indian philosophy emerged from the Ancient Mithila University.

Mithila State Movement is a movement advocating a separate Mithila state in India. This movement gained momentum in 1902 AD when Sir George Grierson, an official of the British Indian government, prepared a map of Mithila state by conducting a language-based survey. In 1881 AD, the word Mithila was added to the dictionary of the British India government. According to the founder, president Dr. Dhanakar Thakur of the International Maithili Council in the proposed Mithila state, 24 districts of Bihar and six districts of Jharkhand, a total of 30 districts, have been included, which has a population of about 70 million. At the same time, the area is 70 thousand square km.

Bisfi Vidyapati Dih is the birthplace of Maithili poet Vidyapati in Mithila. It is located at Bisfi village of Madhubani district in Bihar. It was also an educational centre of the Ancient Mithila University. Vidyapati used to teach his students here. According to legend, Lord Shiva had incarnated here as Ugna, in the form of a poor servant at the courtyard of his great devotee Vidyapati.

Shringi Rishi Ashram at Singiya Village of Madhubani district in the Mithila region of Bihar is an ancient Ashram related to the Vedic sage Shringi in Ramayana. In the campus of Ashram there is a famous Lord Shiva temple known as Shringeshwar Mahadev Mandir.

Pandit Lal Das was a Maithili poet, writer and composer known by the sobriquet Mahakavi during 19th century CE in the Mithila region of Bihar. He was a scholar of Maithili, Sanskrit, Hindi and Persian languages.

Laxman Jha was a freedom fighter in the freedom movement of India from the Mithila region. He was also a pioneer activist in the separate Mithila state movement.

Mithila Vishwavidyalaya Panchang is an Indian annual panchang published by Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University every year. It is also known as simply Vishwavidyalaya Panchang or Mithila Panchang or Mithila Raj Panchang.

Raj Banauli or Banauli Raj was a small kingdom in the Mithila region of the Indian Subcontinent during the 14th - 15th century CE. It was ruled by Dronwara Dynasty. Puraditya of Dronwara Dynasty was the king of the Raj Banauli. He is also known as Dronwara Puraditya and Girinarayan. The king Puraditya defeated another ruler Arjun Singh, so he is also called as "Arjun Vijayee". He was contemporary to the emperor King Shivasimha of Mithila and the Maithili poet Vidyapati. The location of the Raj Banauli is disputed among the scholars. Some scholars believe Banauli Vidyapati Dih near south of the Janakpur city as the location of the Raj Banauli. Similarly some scholars believe Banauli of Saptari district as the location of the Raj Banauli. And some scholars claimed Banauli near Sursand as the location of the Raj Banauli.

Gosaunik Geet are devotional folk songs sung in the Mithila region by Maithils through which they try to please their Kul Devi. It is sung during the auspicious occasions of Mundana, Upanayana and marriage, etc at the Gosaunik Ghar of Maithils. Vidyapati was one of the prominent Maithili poet who is credited for composing and singing the famous Gosaunik Geet "Jai Jai Bhairavi".

Mithila Rajya Sangharsh Samiti is a social organisation in India which advocates the demand of separate Mithila state for Maithils in the present state of Bihar. It organises several protests in the favour of creation of separate Mithila state in India. It had been continuously staging a strike for a separate Mithila state on the first day of every session of the Indian parliament for the previous several years at the premises of the Jantar Mantar in the national capital New Delhi of India.
