Charanams is a world music carnatic jazz band that presents a unique blend of South Indian carnatic music and jazz music. Charanams band presents musical compositions of carnatic musician Nivedita ShivRaj. These music compositions are based on South Indian Carnatic music with jazz improvisations. The compositions do not have any lyrics, but contains carnatic music solfege.

History

Charanams band was founded in 2010 by Nivedita ShivRaj, a carnatic musician based in New York, who plays veena, a South Indian string instrument and vocal music. Her original music compositions Mystic Earth, Rain Dance and Himalayan Queens were selected for 60x60 music collections in 2008, 2009 and 2011. [1] [2] [3] Charanams band performed music concerts based on these compositions which are based on Indian ragas and traditional carnatic compositions blended with jazz style and contemporary rhythms.

Nivedita ShivRaj is the artistic director of Charanams band and contributes music compositions for the band.

2011: Charanams won New York's Battle of the Boroughs Music Contest

Charanams band contested in WNYC Radio's Battle of the Boroughs Music contest in New York City in which over 500 bands compete for the top position. The band, the only Indian music band in the contest, won the music contest for the year and became a noted music band of the city. [4]

Announcing the winner, Terrance McKnight, the host of the contest, said he knew from the band's first audition that they were special. "I think they'll open some hearts and minds at SummerStage," he said. [5]

Since then, Charanams has performed in many events and stages in the USA.

As the winner of the Battle of the Boroughs music contest, Charanams band was invited to perform on November 1, 2011, in New York Mayor's Awards Ceremony for Arts and Culture at Alice Tully Hall (Lincoln Center) in New York. The function was hosted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and actor Alec Baldwin. [6]

The band was also recognized at New York Central Park SummerStage main concert on July 27, 2011, by performing as the opening act for Wanda Jackson and Imelda May. [7] [8]

Carnatic music, known as Karnāṭaka saṃgīta or Karnāṭaka saṅgītam in the South Indian languages, is a system of music commonly associated with South India, including the modern Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is one of two main subgenres of Indian classical music that evolved from ancient Hindu texts and traditions, particularly the Samaveda. The other subgenre being Hindustani music, which emerged as a distinct form because of Persian or Islamic influences from Northern India. The main emphasis in Carnatic music is on vocal music; most compositions are written to be sung, and even when played on instruments, they are meant to be performed in gāyaki (singing) style.

Muthuswami Dikshitar (Mudduswamy Dikshitar)(IAST: muttusvāmi dīkṣitar, 24 March 1776 – 21 October 1835), mononymously Dikshitar, was a South Indian poet, singer and veena player, and a legendary composer of Indian classical music, who is considered one of the musical trinity of Carnatic music. Muthuswami Dikshitar was born on 24 March 1775 in Tiruvarur near Thanjavur, in what is now the state of Tamil Nadu in India, to a family that is traditionally traced back to Virinichipuram in the northern boundaries of the state. His compositions, of which around 500 are commonly known, are noted for their elaborate and poetic descriptions of Hindu gods and temples and for capturing the essence of the raga forms through the vainika (veena) style that emphasises gamakas. They are typically in a slower speed (chowka kala). He is also known by his signature name of Guruguha which is also his mudra (and can be found in each of his songs). His compositions are widely sung and played in classical concerts of Carnatic music.

Varṇam is a type of composition in the Carnatic music system that encapsulates the key features of a raga, and considered as a foundational element in the learning path. Varnams capture the essence of the ragam in terms of typical swara patterns used, vishesha prayogas, highlighting the main notes, etc. This forms the basis for creative presentation (manodharma) of the raga in the form of raga aalapana, kalpana swarams and neraval.

Charulatha Mani is an Indian-born Australian Carnatic and playback singer. She has been performing Carnatic concerts since 1999. She has also sung for movies. Charulatha has appeared in numerous TV shows and radio programmes, in India, and overseas. She has recorded many, CD and DVD albums. Her Isai Payanam TV show, aired on Jaya TV, deals with Ragas in Carnatic and film music and has completed more than 80 episodes. She recently received her PhD from the prestigious Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia, on Hybridising carnatic Music and Early Opera. Charu's music is known for its impeccable adherence to the Karnatik principles. It is also known for being courageous and out there. It is this ongoing interplay, of newness and the vintage, that has become the hallmark of her unique performance philosophy and signature style. This interesting interweave derives from her strong belief that Karnatik music must embrace innovation, inclusivity and diversity in contemporary society.

Agam is a Bangalore-based contemporary Carnatic progressive rock band. The band was formed in the year 2003. The current lineup consists of Harish Sivaramakrishnan (vocals) Swamy Seetharaman, T Praveen Kumar, Aditya Kasyap, Sivakumar Nagarajan, Jagadish Natarajan and Yadhunandan (Drummer). Jagadish Natarajan replaced Suraj Satheesh as the rhythm guitarist in 2012 but the lineup of the band has otherwise remained same. Vignesh Lakshminarayanan was replaced by Aditya Kasyap on bass and backing vocals. Agam is often featured on the Malayalam music channel Kappa TV.
