Charles Sigfred Chieng (born 27 June 1954) [1] is a Micronesian politician who is serving as the ninth and current governor of Yap since 9 January 2023.

Biography

In 1974, Chieng studied political science at the University of Guam, and transferred to the University of the Incarnate Word in Texas, where he earned a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in Secondary Education. He then moved to Washington D.C. for his M.D. in Urban and Region Planning at DCU. [2] [ clarification needed ]

Chieng spent six years as supervisor for Raven Systems and Research Inc. and another six years as manager of Computer Microfilm International Corporation in Arlington, Virginia. In 1994, he became an Administrator of Automatic Data Processing for the FSM Finance Department. [2]

Chieng served as a legislator from 2003 to 2015, where he was speaker of the 7th Yap State Legislature and a member and chair of the Resource, Education and Development Committee.

Chieng and his running mate, Francis Itimai ran in the election for governor of Yap State on 8 November 2022 [2] against the incumbent governor Jesse Salalu and former Cabinet official James Gartamag Lukan. Chieng won the three-way election with a 44.2% plurality of the vote corresponding to 1,630 votes. [3] [4]

Chuuk State is one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). The other states are Kosrae State, Pohnpei State, and Yap State. It consists of several island groups: Namoneas, Faichuuk, the Hall Islands, Namonuito Atoll, Pattiw, and the Mortlock Islands. Chuuk is by far the FSM's most populous state, with 50,000 inhabitants on 120 square kilometers. Chuuk Lagoon is where most people live. Weno island, in the lagoon, is Chuuk's state capital and the country's biggest city. It may hold a referendum on independence in the near future, although this referendum has been repeatedly postponed.

Yap Women's Association is a women's rights organisation in Yap State, in the Federated States of Micronesia. Founded in 1955 as a non-profit, it works to provide resources for women in the state.

Jesse John Salalu is a Micronesian politician who served as the eighth Governor of Yap from December 29, 2021 to January 9, 2023. Salalu was sworn into office following Henry Falan being ousted by the Yap legislature. He previously served as lieutenant Governor of Yap under Falan from January 2019 to December 2021. He was the first Governor of Yap to be born on the outer islands, which meant his lieutenant governor had to have been born on the main island of Yap.

The Constitution of the State of Yap, one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia, is the fundamental legal text of the State of Yap. It was adopted in 1982, promulgated on December 24 of the same year and came into force on January 1, 1983. Amendments were adopted by referendum and promulgated on November 24, 2006. The constitution comprises 15 articles. It can be consulted in English on the website of the Supreme Court of the Federated States of Micronesia.
