Charles Jock (born 23 November 1989) is an American middle-distance runner who specializes in the 800 meter discipline. He ran collegiately at UC Irvine. He is currently the NACAC U23 record holder for the 800 meter race. Jock represented the United States at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics.

Early life

Jock was born in a refugee camp in Ethiopia after his parents, John and Mary, escaped the civil war in Sudan. [3] He and his family would eventually reach asylum in the United States and move to San Diego, California. [3] In 2005, his father died of liver cancer. [4]

Running career

High school

Jock attended Mission Bay High School. He first played basketball for the school, during which coach Emmitt Dodd insisted that Jock try track and field. He first began as a high jumper before being put into an 800-meter race, the distance he would succeed in 2008 he was the California State meet champion in the 800 running a time of 1:51.64. He currently holds both of Mission Bay's 400 and 800 meter records. [5]

Collegiate

Jock attended University of California, Irvine and was given an athletic scholarship. [3] He majored in Urban Studies and showed an interest in sustainable living. [6] He became a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at UCI. While still in college, Jock qualified to represent the United States at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, where he ran in the men's 800 meters. A year later, Jock won the men's 800 meters at the 2012 NCAA DI T&F Championships.

Post-collegiate

Jock qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 800 meters after a surprise 3rd-place finish in the event in the U.S. Olympic Trials. [7] Jock ran in heat 4 of the men's 800 at the 2016 Summer Olympics, finishing in sixth place with a time of 1:47.06.

As a student at Madison East High School in Madison, Wisconsin, Jennings won nine state titles in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and, as of 2022, still holds the 1600 meter record in the WIAA Division 1 with his 1997 time of 4:04.97. At Stanford University, he was an All-America athlete ten times and a NCAA champion four times. He qualified for the 2000 Summer Olympics as a college junior but was eliminated during the semi-finals.

Ralph Serna is a former long-distance runner. He was one of the most prolific high school distance runners in the late 1970s when he competed with Loara High School from his hometown, Anaheim in California. During this time he joined the rivalry between a notable generation of California high school runners, including the likes of Eric Hulst and Thom Hunt. Boris Berian is an American middle distance runner. He was the 2016 National Champion and represented the United States at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships in the 800 meters where he won the gold medal. He set his indoor best winning the world championships at 1:45.87, boldly front running a sub-50 first 400. Outdoors he set his personal best 1:43.34 at the 2015 Herculis meet. In his collegiate career, Berian ran for Adams State University, where he was coached by Damon Martin. Barely a year before the Herculis meet, Berian was working in a Colorado Springs McDonald's as a college dropout, still trying to train after working the morning shift.

Jewett represented the United States at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
