Charles Reese Gibson was an American jurist who served as the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives for the 18th Texas Legislature.
Gibson was born on June 21, 1842 in Oakville, Alabama. [1] He was attending Cumberland School of Law in Tennessee at the time the American Civil War broke out and ended his studies to join the 16th Alabama Regiment where he eventually earned the rank of sergeant major. [2] [3] He surrendered as part of Warren's Battalion at Battle of Decatur in 1865. He was licensed to practice law in Moulton, Alabama after the war and in 1866 moved to Waxahachie, Texas. [1]
He served as the district and county clerk for Ellis County, Texas between 1869 and 1873 and was elected to the Texas Legislature in 1878. [1] He represented Waxahachie, Texas in the 16th, 17th, and 18th state legislatures as a Democrat and served as Speaker of the House in 1883. [4] [5] He also founded the newspapers Waxahachie Enterprise and the Ellis County News. [2]
