Charlie Thomas G. M. Clapham (born 28 June 1991) is a British Romani actor, best known for portraying the role of Freddie Roscoe in the Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks between 2013 and 2017, and again from 2024.

Life and career

Charlie Thomas G. M. Clapham was born on 28 June 1991 in Leicester to an English father and a Romani mother. [1] [2] He trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School. [3] He made his acting debut as Jake in the television adaption of Feather Boy in 2004. [4] In 2007, he appeared in the BBC television film Coming Down the Mountain . In 2010, he appeared in two episodes of The Bill , and subsequently went on to appear in various short films including United (2011), Brian's Offy (2012) and Curse of the Dead (2012), as well as the film Community (2012). [4]

In 2013, Clapham appeared in the film Kick-Ass 2 , before joining the cast of the Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks as Freddie Roscoe, a role he portrayed for four years before leaving the soap in April 2017. [5] [6] [7] He reprised the role seven years later, with his return scenes airing in April 2024. [8] [9] [10] [11]

Outside of Hollyoaks, he has appeared in the film The Hooligan Factory (2014), and went on to appear in array of short films such as Poached (2019), One (2019) and Velvet (2020). [12] In 2021, he appeared in the film Override, and the following year appeared in the television film English Estate. In 2024, he appeared in the films Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver , Bermondsey Tales: Fall of the Roman Empire, and A Gangster's Kiss. [4]

Hollyoaks is a British soap opera which originally began airing on Channel 4 on 23 October 1995. It was created by Phil Redmond, who had previously conceived the soap opera Brookside. From 2005 to 2023, episodes have aired on sister channel E4 a day prior to their broadcast on Channel 4. In 2023, Hollyoaks was removed from Channel 4's early evening schedule, but remains on E4 and Channel 4's on demand service with episodes now uploaded to YouTube. At its inception, the soap was targeted towards an adolescent and young adult audience but it has since broadened its appeal to all age groups. Hollyoaks has covered various taboo subjects rarely seen on British television, for which it has received numerous awards. It has won the award for Best British Soap twice, in 2014 and 2019; its first win broke the 15-year tie between rival soap operas EastEnders and Coronation Street. Beginning with a cast of 15 characters, it now has 39 regular cast members. The longest-serving actor is Nick Pickard, who has portrayed Tony Hutchinson since the first episode.

Diane Hutchinson is a fictional character from the British soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Alex Fletcher. The character made her first appearance on 1 September 2010. Diane was introduced into the series by Hollyoaks' executive producer Paul Marquess, during his rejuvenation of the show. Marquess axed numerous characters and replaced them with new families. Fletcher began filming in June 2010, the same month her casting was publicised. Diane was introduced with her husband, Rob and stepchildren, Sinead and Finn O'Connor. The O'Connors are one of three families that were introduced 2010. Diane is characterised as a "loving wife" and a "devoted stepmum". Doctor Browning was introduced as part of a storyline featuring Mercedes McQueen in which he "shows her the benefits of 'selling her services'". Doctor Browning and Mercedes later begin a relationship, which Smithwick called a "union of the dark soul mates". Robbie Roscoe is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Charlie Wernham. He made his first screen appearance on 2 April 2013. Robbie is part of the Roscoe family and the first member to be introduced. On 19 March 2013, a Channel 4 press release revealed that Robbie "leads the way for a family of boys to descend on Hollyoaks, headed by Gillian Taylforth as mother, Sandy." Wernham's casting was confirmed on 27 March 2013. Wernham auditioned for the show the previous year, attending his second audition on 24 October 2012. Daniel Kilkelly from Digital Spy later revealed Robbie is a "troublesome new student" and he would befriend established character Callum Kane. The writer added that Robbie's headteacher Patrick Blake thinks he can control his behaviour. But Robbie soon begins to cause trouble.

Lindsey Roscoe is a fictional character from the British soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Sophie Austin. The character made her first on-screen appearance on 3 June 2013. Lindsey had been involved in storylines such as covering up the murder of Paul Browning with Cindy Cunningham and Mercedes McQueen, having to choose between two brothers, Joe Roscoe and Freddie Roscoe, being revealed as the notorious Gloved Hand Killer, and teaming up with fellow serial killer Silas Blissett. Kim Butterfield is a fictional character from the British soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Daisy Wood-Davis. The character made her first appearance during the episode broadcast on 7 October 2014. The character and Wood-Davis' casting were announced on 23 September 2014. Kim was created to explore established character Lindsey Butterfield's backstory and to act as a love interest for Esther Bloom. Kim is characterised as a feisty female nurse with a complex personality. She can be evil, manipulative and obsessive but fun-loving and bubbly in other scenes. Wood-Davis has explained that when her character is "alone in her own head" she becomes insane. The character's storylines have often focused on her obsessions with other characters. During her first year on-screen, she had obsessions with Joe Roscoe, Grace Black and her sister Lindsey. Her relationship with Esther remained centric to her role in the show, but Kim's affair with Grace ruined the relationship. Producers also created a dramatic car crash stunt around the character.
