Charlton Warren (born January 17, 1977) is an American football coach who is currently Assistant Head Coach for defense and defensive backs coach at the University of North Carolina. Prior to entering the college coaching ranks, Warren served in the United States Air Force.

Playing career

Warren grew up in Conley, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, and attended Forest Park High School, where he played football and participated in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. He was recruited by Furman University and the University of Georgia, but chose to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. [1] [2] Warren played defensive back at Air Force and graduated in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in human factors engineering. Following his graduation, he spent a decade on active duty with the United States Air Force. [3] Warren earned an MBA from Georgia College & State University in 2003. [4]

Coaching career

Warren's coaching career began in 2005 as a graduate assistant at Air Force, toward the end of head coach Fisher DeBerry's tenure there. He served as an assistant to Jemal Singleton, who coached the junior varsity team. [5] DeBerry retired after the 2006 season. New head coach Troy Calhoun retained several graduate assistants from DeBerry's staff, including Warren, Singleton, Brian Knorr, and Blane Morgan. [6] Calhoun created the title of "recruiting coordinator" for Warren, recognizing his abilities as a recruiter. [7] In early 2012 Calhoun promoted Warren to defensive coordinator, following Matt Wallerstedt's departure for Texas A&M. [8]

Warren served as co-defensive coordinator alongside Steve Russ for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Warren recruited the state of Georgia well, but Air Force's defenses ranked among the worst in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. In January 2014 Air Force hired Brian Knorr, formerly a fellow graduate assistant and most recently defensive coordinator at Wake Forest, as a defensive coach. It was rumored that Warren would be demoted and Knorr would replace him. [9] Warren chose to depart Air Force and become defensive backs coach at the University of Nebraska under defensive coordinator John Papuchis and head coach Bo Pelini. Knorr stayed at Air Force for all of ten days before taking the defensive coordinator job at Indiana University; Matt Weikert eventually filled the position. [10]

2014 would be Pelini's final season at Nebraska; the school fired him following the conclusion of the regular season. Incoming head coach Mike Riley, long-time head coach at Oregon State, planned to retain Warren alone out of all of Pelini's assistants, citing Warren's skill as a recruiter. [3] Nevertheless, Warren departed in early 2015 for the University of North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference to become defensive backs coach under new defensive coordinator Gene Chizik and head coach Larry Fedora, then in his fourth year. Also new to the staff was Papuchis, serving as linebackers coach. [11] [12]

Warren departed North Carolina after the 2016 season to become the defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at the University of Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) under head coach Butch Jones. Warren replaced Willie Martinez, who had resigned after a disappointing season. Beyond improving the pass defense, there was an expectation that Warren could help recruit the Atlanta area, where a resurgent Georgia until Kirby Smart had made significant inroads. [13] Tennessee fired Jones midway through the 2017 season and hired Jeremy Pruitt to replace him. Pruitt did not retain Warren on his staff, but he was quickly hired by Dan Mullen at the University of Florida, also in the SEC, as the cornerbacks coach. [14]

Warren stayed at Florida for a single season before accepting the defensive backs job at Georgia under Kirby Smart. He replaced Mel Tucker, who departed to take the head coaching job at the University of Colorado. Georgia was Warren's third different school in the SEC in a three-year span. [15] After two seasons at Georgia, Warren departed to become defensive coordinator at Indiana University under Tom Allen. He succeeded Kane Wommack, the new head coach at the University of South Alabama. [16]

Following the departures of former coaches Jay Bateman and Jovan Dewitt, Warren was named co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for North Carolina on January 8, 2022, returning to the Tar Heels alongside Gene Chizik, who will serve as the Assistant Head Coach for Defense and defensive coordinator. [17] After the 2023 season, as the Tar Heel defense continued to struggle, Chizik was let go, and Geoff Collins was hired to replace him. Warren, who had returned to Chapel Hill with Chizik, was retained by coach Mack Brown and elevated to the assistant head coach position. [18]

He also was an assistant at the Air Force Academy when he went to Ohio University with Jim Grobe. He was the head coach of the Ohio Bobcats program from 2001 to 2004. He was fired on November 18, 2004, after he compiled an 11–35 (.239) record in four seasons. He was replaced by the more successful Frank Solich. He previously served as a defensive coordinator under the previous head coach, Grobe. His best season came in 2004, when his team went 4–7, including 2–6 in conference play. Until February 2008 he served as an assistant head coach at the Air Force Academy under head coach Troy Calhoun. In 2008, he accepted a position that reunited him with Grobe at Wake Forest University. In 2014 and 2015 he held the DC position for the Indiana Hoosiers football team. In January, 2016, Knorr did not have his contract renewed by Indiana.

Eugene C. Chizik Jr. is an American football coach who was most recently the defensive coordinator and Assistant Head Coach for Defense at North Carolina. A veteran of the coaching ranks, Chizik previously was UNC's defensive coordinator for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, and served as the head coach of the Auburn football team from 2009 until the end of the 2012 season. Chizik's 2010 Auburn Tigers football team completed a 14–0 season with a victory over Oregon in the BCS National Championship Game, and quarterback Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy. Chizik played college football at the University of Florida in 1981 for head coach Charley Pell.

James Edward Willis III is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) and a former coach in the NCAA and in the NFL. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 1993 NFL Draft. He played college football at Auburn. He played high school football at J.O. Johnson High School in Huntsville, Alabama. He was the defensive assistant/linebackers coach for the New Orleans Saints of the NFL until his termination on January 5, 2017.

Corey Raymond is an American football coach, and former player. He is currently the Defensive Backs coach at LSU.

Curtis Scott Luper is an American football coach who is currently the running backs coach with the Missouri Tigers. He previously coached running backs and was a recruiting coordinator at Auburn under head coach Gene Chizik. Luper served as the assistant head coach and running backs coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys from 2005 to 2008.

John Papuchis is the special teams coordinator and defensive ends coach for Florida State University. He is a former defensive coordinator for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels football team and for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Tommy Thigpen is an American college football coach and former player. He is currently the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at University of North Carolina, a position he assumed in January 2018. Prior to that, he spent 14 years as an assistant coach in the collegiate ranks, including a stint at Auburn University where he was part of the 2010 National Championship team. Thigpen played as a linebacker at the University of North Carolina and thereafter was drafted by the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). He also played for the Barcelona Dragons of the World League of American Football (WLAF).

Phillip Lolley is an American gridiron football coach. He was recently the defensive coordinator for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Previously, he was assistant coach and administrator at Auburn University. He worked for the Tigers football program since being hired by Tommy Tuberville in 1999, until he temporarily retired in 2014.

Scot Loeffler is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the head coach at Bowling Green State University. He formerly served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Boston College. He was previously the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Virginia Tech, having previously held the same role at Auburn University under head coach Gene Chizik.
