Almirante Viel is a Polar Class 5 icebreaker operated by the Chilean Navy. [6] [7] [8]
Previously referred to with the project name Antartica 1, it replaced the 1969-built second-hand vessel Almirante Óscar Viel acquired from Canada in 1994 and decommissioned in 2019. Accounts differ as to when construction of the ship began. The Santiago Times reported the first steel was cut in May 2017, while Jane's Navy International reported construction began in August 2018. [3] [9] The ship was built at the Chilean shipyard ASMAR. [10] She was classed by Lloyd’s Register. [10] Maritime Executive reported in 2016 that she would be comparable to Argentina's ARA Almirante Irízar. [11]
The ship was launched 22 December 2022. [12]
In April 2024, the ship completed its first round of sea trials. [13]
Almirante Viel is 111 metres (364 ft 2 in) long overall and has a beam of 21 metres (68 ft 11 in) and draft of 7.2 metres (23 ft 7 in). She displaces 10,400 tonnes (10,200 long tons). [2] She has accommodation for 150 crew and passengers such as scientists and researchers. [3]
Almirante Viel is strengthened for navigation in ice in accordance with the Unified Requirements for Polar Class Ships developed by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Her ice class, Polar Class 5, is intended for year-round operation in medium first-year ice which may include old ice inclusions. [5] [14]
Almirante Viel has a diesel-electric propulsion system. [2] Her power plant consists of four medium-speed diesel generators: two sixteen-cylinder Wabtec 16V250MDC and two six-cylinder Wabtec 6L250MDC units. The total rating of the power plant is 20.7 megawatts (27,800 hp). The engines meet International Maritime Organization Tier III emission limits for nitrogen oxides without the use of selective catalytic reduction. [15] Her two fixed pitch propellers, each driven by a 4.5-megawatt (6,000 hp) electric propulsion motor, give Almirante Viel speed of 15 knots (28 km/h; 17 mph) and range of 14,000 nautical miles (26,000 km; 16,000 mi) in open water, and ability to break 1-metre (3.3 ft) level ice at a continuous speed of 3 knots (5.6 km/h; 3.5 mph). For maneuvering and dynamic positioning, she has a 2-megawatt (2,700 hp) bow thruster. [2] [5]
HMS Endurance was an icebreaker that served as the Royal Navy ice patrol ship between 1991 and 2008. Built in Norway as MV Polar Circle, she was chartered by the Royal Navy in 1991 as HMS Polar Circle, before being purchased outright and renamed HMS Endurance in 1992 as a replacement for the previous HMS Endurance whose hull had been weakened by striking an iceberg.
An icebreaker is a special-purpose ship or boat designed to move and navigate through ice-covered waters, and provide safe waterways for other boats and ships. Although the term usually refers to ice-breaking ships, it may also refer to smaller vessels, such as the icebreaking boats that were once used on the canals of the United Kingdom.
ARA Almirante Irízar is a large icebreaker of the Argentine Navy. She was ordered from a shipyard in Finland in 1975.
A research vessel is a ship or boat designed, modified, or equipped to carry out research at sea. Research vessels carry out a number of roles. Some of these roles can be combined into a single vessel but others require a dedicated vessel. Due to the demanding nature of the work, research vessels may be constructed around an icebreaker hull, allowing them to operate in polar waters.
The Protecteur class of naval auxiliaries for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) began as the Joint Support Ship Project, a Government of Canada procurement project for the RCN that is part of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy. It will see the RCN acquire two multi-role vessels to replace the earlier Protecteur-class auxiliary oiler replenishment vessels.
Almirante Óscar Viel was an icebreaker in service with the Chilean Navy in 1995–2019. Originally built for the Canadian Coast Guard as CCGS Norman McLeod Rogers, named for former Canadian Member of Parliament and cabinet minister Norman McLeod Rogers (1894–1940), the vessel was acquired by Chile in 1994 and renamed after Counter Admiral Óscar Viel y Toro (1837–1892), the commander of the Chilean naval forces from 1881 to 1883 and 1891.
Taymyr is a shallow-draft nuclear-powered icebreaker, and the first of two similar vessels. She was built in 1989 for the Soviet Union in Finland, at the Helsinki Shipyard by Wärtsilä Marine, by order of the Murmansk Shipping Company. Her sister ship is Vaygach.
CCGS Arpatuuq is a future Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker that will be built under the Polar Icebreaker Project as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy. The ship was initially expected to join the fleet by 2017 but has been significantly delayed and is now expected by 2030.
Polar Class (PC) refers to the ice class assigned to a ship by a classification society based on the Unified Requirements for Polar Class Ships developed by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Seven Polar Classes are defined in the rules, ranging from PC 1 for year-round operation in all polar waters to PC 7 for summer and autumn operation in thin first-year ice.
S. A. Agulhas is a South African ice-strengthened training ship and former polar research vessel. She was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Shimonoseki, Japan, in 1978. S. A. Agulhas was used to service the three South African National Antarctic Programme research bases, Gough Island, Marion Island in the Southern Ocean and SANAE IV in Antarctica, as well as various research voyages.
Harry DeWolf-class offshore patrol vessels are warships of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) built within the Government of Canada Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) procurement project, part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy. In July 2007 the federal government announced plans for acquiring six to eight icebreaking warships for the RCN.
CCGS Pierre Radisson is the lead ship of her class of icebreakers. Constructed and operated by the Canadian Coast Guard, the vessel is based at Quebec City on the Saint Lawrence River. The ship was constructed in British Columbia in the 1970s and has been in service ever since. The vessel is named for Pierre-Esprit Radisson, a 17th-century French fur trader and explorer.

Project 21900 icebreakers and their derivative designs are a series of Russian diesel-electric icebreakers built in the 2000s. They are also sometimes referred to using the type size series designation LK-16.
The Astilleros y Maestranzas de la Armada(English: Navy Shipyards and Armories), better known by the acronym ASMAR, is a Chilean state-owned shipbuilding company with autonomous administration, which provides services to the Chilean Navy, mainly, and also to other domestic and foreign customers. Its predecessor was Arsenales de Marina, created in 1895, until it was restructured and adopted its current name on April 6, 1960.
The Polar Security Cutter Program is a program to recapitalize the United States Coast Guard's aging fleet of icebreakers, currently consisting of the heavy icebreaker USCGC Polar Star and the medium icebreaker USCGC Healy, with three new multi-mission vessels referred to as Polar Security Cutters (PSC). These heavy polar icebreakers will allow the USCG to perform its statutory missions in the Arctic as well as support the United States Antarctic Program with Operation Deep Freeze.
Vasiliy Golovnin is a Russian Project 10620 icebreaking cargo ship built in 1988 in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and named after the Russian navigator, vice admiral Vasily Golovnin (1776—1831). The vessel is operated by Russia's Far East Shipping Company (FESCO).
Project 10510, also known through the Russian type size series designations LK-110Ya and LK-120Ya or the project name Leader, is a planned series of Russian nuclear-powered icebreakers. Designed in the 2010s, when built in the 2020s, it would supersede Project 22220 icebreakers as the largest and most powerful icebreakers in the world.
The vessel is scheduled to be completed within four years at a cost of USD217 million, according to the Chilean Ministry of Defense.
Speaking to Jane's at Euronaval 2018 in Paris, ASMAR shipyard's chief marketing officer, Jorge Terrazas, confirmed that first steel was officially cut in August, marking the start of construction at its Talcahuano facilities in the Biobio region.
'Antártica 1 will have greater capabilities for supporting high-level, onboard scientific activities which will allow it to break from the seasonality of scientific work, accessing data in real time, and analyzing the results obtained while underway,' Retamales said. 'It will have modern, hydroacoustic equipment, such as echo sounding, sonar, an ocean floor profiler, a current profiler, and a high-precision acoustic positioning system. It will also be outfitted with biology, microbiology, and chemistry labs, and it will have the means for collecting, storing, and preserving water samples and samples from the seabed, with the capacity provided by modern and spacious refrigeration chambers,' he added.
Chilean defense sources said the icebreaker project to replace the 6.500 ton Almirante Viel include an initial budget of 150 million dollars and building the new 8.000 ton ice breaker with foreign technical assistance in local shipyard Asmar. Meanwhile, Marinero Fuentealba, an 1,800-ton offshore patrol vessel with reinforced hull for polar operations, is being completed by ASMAR for commissioning in August.
Chilean president Michelle Bachelet cut the first sheet of steel for the construction of the country's new icebreaker which is expected to be operational for the 2022/23 Antarctic season, replacing the ageing Almirante Oscar Viel.
The new vessel, to be delivered in 2021, will rival Argentina's 15,000 ton displacement Almirante Irizar, presently the largest icebreaker in South America.
