Chinedu 'Chin' Okeke (born 27 February 1986) is a Nigerian-British entertainment entrepreneur and music executive. He is the founder of The Eclipse Group and co-founder of The Gidi Culture Festival . [1] [2] In 2020, he joined Universal Music Group as the General Manager for Nigeria and was later appointed as the Managing Director (west Africa) in 2021. [3]

Career

After his university education, Chin undertook business training at two Fortune 500 companies; Credit Suisse in New York and the AP Moller Maersk Group in Shanghai and Lagos. [4]

In 2010, Chin founded the Eclipse Brand Agency, a communications company. [5] [6]

In 2013, he founded Eclipse Live, a live entertainment company. [7] [8] Later on, he co-founded alongside Oriteme Banigo, The Gidi Culture Festival, [9] one of the largest Afrobeats music festivals in West Africa. [10] In 2017, Eclipse Live collaborated with Red Bull for the execution of the Red Bull Music Academy in Lagos.

In 2018, he was listed among one of YNaija's Top 10 in entertainment. [11] In 2019, he was one of the selected delegates for The Great Escape, an annual music festival in Brighton, by the British Council. [12] In 2020, he was appointed as the General manager of the Universal Music Group, Nigeria, and later became the Managing Director of West Africa in 2021. [13] That same year, he was mentioned among the Billboard's Power Players. [14] [15] At the end of 2021, he left the Universal Music Group and returned to the executive board of Eclipse. [16]

Chin is also one of the founding trustees of the ECHO Music and Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports the development of the creative sector in Africa. [17]

Personal life

Okeke is married to Nenesi Ibru, a member of the Ibru family and the daughter of Nigerian billionaire Oskar Ibru. [18] [19]

The Gidi Culture Festival is an annual one-day music and arts festival that takes place in Lagos, Nigeria. Co-founded by Chinedu Okeke and Oriteme Banigo, it was created in response to a demand from the local youth culture for live, affordable, and accessible entertainment in Africa. The festival provides a venue for live bands, DJs, and musical acts to perform. It also features outdoor activities, local vendors, and artisans. The main show features a line-up of African acts from numerous countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Congo, Kenya, and the United Kingdom. The goal of the festival is to encourage the development of African talent and promote artists both within the continent and into overseas markets.

Obi Asika is the Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture, NCAC. He was appointed on Friday 12, January 2024 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Before his appointment, he is known for his involvement in the growth of Nigeria's music industry, as the founder and CEO of Storm 360 - an indigenous music label. Storm 360 has spawned a lot of Nigerian entertainers including Naeto C, Ikechukwu, Sasha P, General Pype, L.O.S., Ms Jaie, Tosin Martins, and Yung 6ix.

Afrobeats, not to be confused with Afrobeat or Afroswing, is an umbrella term to describe popular music from West Africa and the diaspora that initially developed in Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK in the 2000s and 2010s. Afrobeats is less of a style per se, and more of a descriptor for the fusion of sounds flowing majorly out of Nigeria. Genres such as hiplife, jùjú music, highlife and naija beats, among others, were amalgamated under the "Afrobeats" umbrella.

Bolaji Odojukan, better known by his stage name BOJ is an English-Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer. He is one-third of the musical group DRB LasGidi with TeeZee and Fresh L, and is known as a pioneer of alté.

Alté is a fusion genre of music that combines elements of afrobeats, dancehall, reggae, hip hop, and alternative R&B. The term was coined in the 2010s by Nigerian music group DRB LasGidi, meaning alternative and "individualistic and non-traditional modes of self-expression" through music and fashion.

The company works with African artists, primarily in afrobeats, but has expanded into other music cultures, including Caribbean artists working in reggae. They have grown the afrobeat audience in the U.S, by producing shows in more prominent venues.
