The Gidi Culture Festival (often dubbed Coachella in Lagos) is an annual one-day music and arts festival that takes place in Lagos, Nigeria. [1] Co-founded by Chinedu Okeke and Oriteme Banigo, it was created in response to a demand from the local youth culture for live, affordable, and accessible entertainment in Africa. [2] The festival provides a venue for live bands, DJs, and musical acts to perform. It also features outdoor activities, local vendors, and artisans. [3] The main show features a line-up of African acts from numerous countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Congo, Kenya, and the United Kingdom. The goal of the festival is to encourage the development of African talent and promote artists both within the continent and into overseas markets. [2]

History

The Gidi Culture Festival is produced by Eclipse Live Production. [4] [5] It was inspired by the now defunct Lekki Sound Splash, a festival once headlined by Fela Kuti. Co-founded by Chinedu Okeke and Oriteme Banigo, the festival's main aim is to create a safe space for the youth that would enable and empower them. [6] The festival has been noted for its novel ideas about giving back to the community. Its Beach Sweeps and Dreams Project are exchange programs that create opportunities for young people to work in a variety of different creative industries. [5] [7] In addition to the Gidi Culture Festival, Eclipse Live Production produces Nigeria's Palmwine Music Fest and Nativeland. In an interview with IQ magazine in 2018, Okeke said the Gidi Culture Festival is yet to break even, although he is optimistic that it will do so in a couple of years. [8]

2014: Inaugural edition

The inaugural edition of the festival featured performances from Ice Prince, Phyno, Naeto C, Chidinma, Dammy Krane, Blink, Poe, Boj, Teezee, Ayo Jay, Emma Nyra, Patoranking, Lynxx, Jesse Jagz, Oritse Femi, Orezi, Reminisce, Efya, DJ Obi, DJ Caise, DJ Hazan, DJ Cuppy, DJ Kaywise, Falz, Pucado, Yung L, and Endia. 2015: Second edition

The second edition of the festival was held on April 4, 2015, at Eko Atlantic in Lagos. It featured performances from M.I Abaga, Show Dem Camp, Waje, Yemi Alade, Falz, EL, Victoria Kimani, Urban Boyz, Awilo Longomba, Temi Dollface, Ebisan and Sauti Sol. It also featured DJ Neptune, DJ Lambo and DJ Gino Brown. [11]

2016: Third edition

The third edition of the festival was held at Eko Atlantic in Lagos. Hosted by Sensei Uche and Nomuzi, it featured performances from Tiwa Savage, D'banj, Phyno, Small Doctor, Timaya, Adekunle Gold, Yemi Alade, K.O, Riky Rick, Mr 2Kay, Base One, Que Peller, Dice Ailes, Poe, Funbi and Saeon. [12]

2017: Fourth edition

The fourth edition of the festival was held on April 15, 2017. It was headlined by Diplo, Burna Boy and Davido. [13] The festival featured additional performances from Seyi Shay, Reekado Banks, Simi, Niniola, Sauti Sol, and Vanessa Mdee. [14]

2018: Fifth edition

The fifth edition of the festival featured performances from Wizkid, 2Baba, Brymo, Adekunle Gold, Maleek Berry, DJ Spinall and Tiwa Savage, along with live sets newcomers Odunsi the Engine, Tay Iwar and Lady Donli. [6] In addition to the main stage, the festival's organizers introduced a second stage called the Next Generation stage. Before the show started, the configuration on the soundboard switched, resulting in the show being delayed for an hour. [6] A record attendance of 8,000 people attended the festival. The organizers used their own ticketing platform, Seagate, to sell over 3,000 tickets in pre-sales. [8]

2019: Sixth edition

The sixth edition of the festival was held on April 20, 2019, at the Landmark Beach Front in Victoria Island, Lagos. [15] The festival featured performances from Patoranking, Niniola, Teni, Moonchild, Sanelly, DJ Neptune, Wande Coal, DJ Cuppy, Sarz, Zlatan, Blaqbonez, and L.A.X. [16] It was estimated that over 10,000 people attended the festival. [8]


2020: Seventh edition

The seventh edition of the annual event which is usually held during the Easter [17] celebration was postponed to October 2020. It was then cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The ceremony featured performances from artists such as Miguel, Trey Songz, Flavour N'abania, French Montana, Tiwa Savage, Davido, Mafikizolo, Uhuru, Oskido, Professor, Diamond Platnumz, Phyno, Yuri da Cunha, Sauti Sol, Sarkodie, Ice Prince, The Arrows, Khuli Chana, Dr SID, Fally Ipupa, Michael Lowman, Don Jazzy, DJ Clock, Beatenberg, DJ Kent, Big Nuz, Toofan, D'Banj, DJ Vigi, DJ Tira, DJ Buckz, and Burna Boy. On 27 May 2014, the nominees for the MTV Base Leadership Award were announced. On 28 May, MTV Base revealed Drake, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, and Miley Cyrus as the nominees for the Best International Act category. Davido and Mafikizolo received the most nominations with four each. Mi Casa and P-Square received three nominations. Diamond Platnumz and Wizkid were nominated twice for both Best Male and Best Collaboration.

The 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards took place on 31 August 2014, at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The eligibility period was from March 2013 to March 2014. In April 2014, the NEA reviewing committee began collecting submissions for the 2014 edition. The deadline for submission was April 30, 2014, and the nominations were announced on May 29, 2014. Tiwa Savage and Davido received the most nominations with 5 each. Don Jazzy, Flavour N'abania and Wizkid all got four nominations each, while Olamide, Patoranking, Chidinma and Oritse Femi followed closely with three nominations.

The 2014 Channel O Music Video Awards took place on 29 November 2014 at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Soweto. Nominees were announced on 4 September. Cassper Nyovest, K.O and Davido led the nominations with 5 each. DJ Clock's hit song "Pluto", which features the singing trio Beatenberg, followed with 4. AKA and Uhuru both received three nominations apiece. Cassper Nyovest and Diamond Platnumz both took home three awards apiece.

The Headies 2014 was the ninth edition of The Headies. It took place on 14 December 2014, at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. Themed "Feel the Passion", the show was hosted by Toke Makinwa and Basketmouth. It was initially scheduled to hold on 25 October 2014. Bovi was initially announced as one of the hosts, but ended up not hosting due to him being booked for another show. On 30 September 2014, nominations were announced during a press briefing at the HipTV office in Allen, Lagos. Kcee, Olamide and Phyno led the nominations with five each. Tiwa Savage, Oritse Femi and The Mavins followed closely with four apiece. Yemi Alade was nominated for Song of the Year, Best Pop Single and Next Rated. Olamide, Patoranking and Davido each took home two awards apiece. Don Jazzy won the Producer of the Year plaque, while Sir Victor Uwaifo received the Hall of Fame recognition.

Derin Phillips, better known as DJ Caise, is a Nigerian disc jockey.

The 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards were held on October 22, 2016, at Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa. It recognised and rewarded musicians and achievers who made an impact on African music and youth culture during the eligibility period. The awards ceremony aired live on MTV Base, MTV and BET. It was transmitted worldwide on partner stations and content platforms, including BET International. The show was hosted by Nomzamo Mbatha, Yemi Alade and Bonang Matheba. It featured performances from Future, Yemi Alade, Nasty C, Babes Wodumo, Cassper Nyovest and Patoranking, among others.

Rhythm Unplugged is a music concert in West Africa. CEO of the Flytime Group, Cecil Hammond, organised the first concert in 2004. The annual concert is organised by Flytime Promotions, a subsidiary of the Flytime Group.

<i>Afrikan Sauce</i> 2019 studio album by Sauti Sol

Afrikan Sauce is the fourth studio album by Kenyan band Sauti Sol, released on their eponymous record label Sauti Sol Entertainment. Primarily an Afropop and R&B record, Afrikan Sauce marked a departure from the traditional acoustic sound of their previous albums. It features guest appearances from Patoranking, Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy, Vanessa Mdee, Yemi Alade, Khaligraph Jones, Nyashinski, Bebe Cool, Mi Casa, Toofan, Jah Prayzah and C4 Pedro. The album comprises thirteen tracks and was supported by the previously released singles "Melanin", "Girl Next Door", "Afrikan Star", "Short N Sweet" and "Tujiangalie". Afikan Sauce received positive reviews from music critics, who characterized it as a "game changer" and commended it for having "substantial replay value". The album won Album of the Year in Africa at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards.
