Paul N. "Chip" Jaenichen is an American retired United States Navy officer who served as the Administrator of the United States Maritime Administration from July 25,2014,to January 13,2017.
Jaenichen is a native of Brandenburg,Kentucky,where he attended Meade County High School. Both of his parents had served in the United States Army. Jaenichen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in ocean engineering from United States Naval Academy and Master of Science in engineering management from Old Dominion University. [1]
Jaenichen primarily served on submarines during his 30-year career with the United States Navy,including the USS Skipjack,USS Oklahoma City,the USS Baton Rouge and the USS Key West. He served as the executive officer of the USS Kentucky from 1994 to 1996. He also served as the commander of Submarine Squadron 11 in San Diego,and deputy chief of legislative affairs for the United States Department of the Navy.
In 2013,Jaenichen was selected to serve as acting United States Maritime Administration by President Barack Obama,succeeding David T. Matsuda. Jaenichen had previously served as deputy administrator under Matsuda since 2012. [2] He was later nominated to serve as the permanent administrator. During his tenure,he advocated for the "revitalization" of the United States Merchant Marine. He also provided testimony to the United States Senate Committee on Commerce,Science,and Transportation,United States House Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock and Foreign Agriculture,and United States House Transportation Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation. [3] [4] He left office in 2017,and was succeeded by Mark H. Buzby. [5]
In 2017,Jaenichen joined Liberty Global Logistics LLC as an executive vice president. [6]
The United States Merchant Marine Academy is a United States service academy in Kings Point,New York. It trains its midshipmen to serve as officers in the United States Merchant Marine,branches of the United States Armed Forces and the transportation industry. Midshipmen are trained in different fields such as marine engineering,navigation,ship's administration,maritime law,personnel management,international law,customs,and many other subjects important to the task of running a large ship.
The Military Sealift Command (MSC) is an organization that controls the replenishment and military transport ships of the United States Navy. Military Sealift Command has the responsibility for providing sealift and ocean transportation for all US military services as well as for other government agencies. Mark Howard Buzby is a retired United States Navy rear admiral who served as the Administrator of the United States Maritime Administration. He retired from the Navy in 2013 and joined Carnival Cruise Line's Safety &Reliability Review Board. Buzby was nominated to be MARAD Administrator in June 2017 by President Donald Trump,and confirmed to the position by the United States Senate on August 3,2017. He resigned from the post on January 11,2021,along with Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao,to protest the 2021 United States Capitol attack.
USS Interpreter (AGR-14) was a Guardian-class radar picket ship,converted from a Liberty Ship,acquired by the US Navy in 1957. She was reconfigured as a radar picket ship and assigned to radar picket duty in the North Pacific Ocean as part of the Distant Early Warning Line.

John E. Jamian is an American businessman,former U.S. government official,and Michigan State Legislator. He served as deputy and later acting maritime administrator,the head of the U.S. Maritime Administration,an agency of the United States Department of Transportation,from 2003 until 2006. He was confirmed as deputy maritime administrator by the Senate on May 7,2003 and became acting maritime administrator February 12,2005. Prior to his service at the Maritime Administration,Jamian was elected to three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1991 to 1996. From 1997 to 2001 he served as executive director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority and from 2001 until his appointment as deputy director in 2003 as the executive director the Armenian Assembly of America. Between 2011 and 2015,Jamian resumed his role as executive director at the Port of Detroit. Since returning to private life in 2015,he has held the position of Chief Operations Officer for Troy,Michigan based AmeriCare Medical Inc. and continues to serve as the Armenian Assembly of America's State of Michigan Director.
David Peter Pekoske is an American government official and retired U.S. Coast Guard vice admiral who has served as the seventh administrator of the Transportation Security Administration in the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) since 2017. He served as the acting deputy secretary of Homeland Security from April to November 2019 and again from January to June 2021. From January 20,2021 to February 2,2021 he served as acting secretary of homeland security,during the Senate confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas. Pekoske retired with 33 years of active military service in 2010 as the 26th vice commandant of the Coast Guard.
