The Chippiparai is a breed of sighthound from the State of Tamil Nadu in southern India. [1]

The Chippiparai has typical streamlined sighthound features with long legs and a lean and lithe frame built for speed. The breed is usually white in colour, although other colours can be found. It averages 61 centimetres (24 in) in height at the withers, dogs averaging 63 centimetres (25 in) and bitches 56 centimetres (22 in). [2] [3] [4] A hardy breed, the Chippiparai is reputed to prefer a single master, shunning food and pats from anyone except its handler. [3] [4] [5] The Chippiparai is often regarded as the most intelligent and biddable of India's native dog breeds. [5]

The Chippiparai is most frequently found in the regions of Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Thenkasi, Thoothukudi, and Madurai, thought to be descended from Salukis the breed was historically kept by royalty in southern India, its name derived from a village name of Sippipparai in Vembakottai Taluk of Virudhunagar District. [2] The Chippiparai was traditionally used to hunt small game, predominantly hare. Due to its intelligence and biddable nature, the breed has successfully been trained as police dogs. The dog was originally bred in the Arabian Peninsula. The modern breed is typically deep-chested and long-legged, and similar dogs appear in medieval and ancient art. The breed is most closely related to the Afghan hound, a basal breed that predates the emergence of modern breeds in the 19th century, and the Saluki has been purebred both in the Middle East, including by royalty, since at least that era, and in the West since the 1840s, though as a free-breeding landrace, similar dogs are common as feral animals in the Middle East. A related standardised breed is the north African Sloughi.

The Kanni (கன்னி), meaning pure, is a rare indigenous South Indian sighthound breed of dog found in the state of Tamil Nadu. Their native breeding tract is located around villages in the Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar and Thoothukudi districts. The breed is used mainly for coursing. "Kanni" refers to the black and tan and black and sable varieties, while the solid-coloured variety is known as the Chippiparai. However, some experts claim that the Kanni and the Chippiparai are distinct breeds.

The Mahratta Hound, sometimes called the Mahratta Greyhound, is a breed of dog found in India. It is a sighthound, and like the Banjara Hound it is bred and used for hunting by the nomadic Banjara of Maharashtra. The Mahratta Hound is believed to be of Arabian or Persian heritage, is often blue and tan in colour and stands around 22 inches (56 cm). It is prized for its prowess in hunting panther and boar, both very formidable prey for a hound, as well as blackbuck.

Sankarapandiapuram is a panchayat village in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, India. Initially, the village came under Sattur taluk, it is now a part of the newly formed Vembakottai taluk. It is located on the way from Sattur to Sankarankovil or Rajapalayam via Elayirampannai route. The village has two sections namely Kila and Mela Sankarapandiapuram with around 500 households. The total population of the village is 1026 of which 497 males and 529 females.
