Chris Franck is a German-born English musician, songwriter, record producer, and remixer, best known for his involvement with the bands Batu, Da Lata, Smoke City, and Zeep. He is described as a "multi-instrumentalist". [1]
Franck was born in Germany, and has lived in the UK since the age of six. His father is German, his mother is Dutch.
Franck gained initial success in 1992 in the group Batu, featuring Oli Savill, Franc O'Shea and Tristan Banks, among others.
In 1997, the Smoke City single "Underwater Love" debuted on the UK Singles Chart after appearing as part of a Levi's ad campaign in the United Kingdom. [2]
The band Zeep is a project created with Nina Miranda, a bandmate from Smoke City.
Franck's musical influences include samba, Bossa nova, the music of Africa, folk music, funk, and rock music.
Franck co-wrote and produced two albums for Chris Blackwell's "Palm Pictures" label with the band Da Lata. The first album was called Songs From the Tin, and the second was called Serious. He also released an album of remixes under the Da Lata name for Palm Pictures. He co-wrote and produced two albums with the band Smoke City for Jive Records: Flying Away and Heroes of Nature.
Franck collaborated on Ernest Ranglin's album Modern Answers to Old Problems alongside Tony Allen, Courtney Pine, and Denys Baptiste.[ citation needed ] The album was engineered by Jerry Boys and produced by Mark van den Berg and Trevor Wyatt.

Smoke City was an English band that blended acid jazz and trip hop, borrowing from Brazilian styles such as samba and bossa nova and some lyrics have excerpts in Portuguese. They are best known for their single "Underwater Love", which was a major hit in 1997, after being used in a Levi's television advertisement, "Mermaids". In 1997, the band released their first album, Flying Away, which included several hits such as "Underwater Love", "Mr. Gorgeous " and "Águas de Março ". Smoke City's next album, Heroes of Nature, was released in 2001. An extended version of Heroes of Nature had three more tracks than the original, one of them being a cover version of John Lennon's "Imagine".
John David "J. D." Souther is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He has written and co-written songs recorded by Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles. Souther is probably best known for his songwriting abilities, especially in the field of country rock. He co-wrote some of the biggest hits for the Eagles, including "Best of My Love", "Victim of Love", "Heartache Tonight", and "New Kid in Town". Sidestepper is a Colombian band formed in 1996 by English DJ/producer Richard Blair. Several of their albums were co-written and co-produced with Colombian singer-songwriter and producer Iván Benavides, including their influential 2003 album 3AM . The group is one of the originators of the Colombian "electro cumbia" sound, influenced both by Afro-Colombian popular music styles like salsa and cumbia as well as electronic dance music such as drum and bass and dub. Over the years Sidestepper has included a number of vocalists and musicians who have since become well-known artists in their own right in Colombia, such as Gloria "Goyo" Martínez of ChocQuibTown, drummer Kike Egurrola, and Humberto Pernett. Since 2000 they have played all over the world, including festivals such as Glastonbury, Coachella, Roskilde and Womad.

Da Lata are a British group formed in 1994 by Chris Franck and Patrick Forge. They combine Afro-Brazilian influences with other strands from the melting pot of their native London. Franck and Forge previously worked together with the Brighton-based group Batu before setting up Da Lata as a more studio based project. Franck is the main creative force as songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, whereas Forge, better known as a DJ and broadcaster, is credited as co-producer. They made three albums for Palm Pictures: Songs from the Tin (2000), Serious (2003) and a collection of their remix work for other artists, Remixes, which featured their interpretations of songs by Femi Kuti, Luciano, Bebel Gilberto and Sly and Robbie, among others. After a hiatus of several years, the pair started work on a new album in 2011. It was scheduled for release in early 2013.
