Christine Nakaseeta Binayisa Kitumba is a Ugandan lawyer and judge. She served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda, from July 2009. [1] Her tenure was expected to conclude in 2015. [2] In July 2017, she was requested to continue serving, in order to alleviate a shortage of justices on the country's highest court. [3] As of September 2017, she served on the court on an extended contract. [4] Before her appointment on the Supreme Court, she was a member of the Court of Appeal of Uganda. [1]

Background and education

She was born in the Buganda Region of Uganda. After attending primary school locally, she was admitted to Trinity College Nabbingo, where she finished with a High School Diploma. [5] She has a Bachelor of Laws obtained from Dar es Salaam University, Tanzania a public university that was established in 1961. Has a Master of Laws, obtained from The Queen's University Belfast in 1969.

On the Supreme Court of Uganda

In August 2015, Justice Christine Kitumba was part of the 6-1 majority which held that it was unconstitutional for the family of the man to demand a refund of the bride price, from the family of the woman, in case of a divorce. However the demand of bride price before a traditional marriage was ruled constitutional. [6] [7]

The Court of Appeal of Uganda is the second-highest judicial organ in Uganda. It derives its powers from Article 134 of the 1995 Constitution. It is an appellate court when hearing cases appealed from the High Court of Uganda. However, it has original jurisdiction when adjudicating matters relating to the constitutionality of matters before it. All judgments by the Court of Appeal are theoretically appealable to the Supreme Court of Uganda, if the Supreme Court decides to hear the appeal.

The High Court of Uganda, also Uganda High Court, is the third-highest judicial organ in Uganda, behind the Supreme Court of Uganda and the Court of Appeal of Uganda. It has "unlimited original jurisdiction", with powers to try any case of any value or crime of any magnitude. It is also mandated to hear all appeals from all Magistrates Courts. High Court judgements are appealable to the Uganda Court of Appeal.

Lydia Mugambe, is the Inspector General of Government (IGG) as of March 2022, a Ugandan lawyer who served as judge at the High Court of Uganda between May 2013 and September 2020. She was appointed to the High Court by President Yoweri Museveni, on 3 May 2013. Lady Justice Mugambe Ssali was subsequently appointed by President Museveni as Inspector General of Government on 18th September 2020
