The Chrysler Valiant (SV1) is an automobile which was produced in Australia from March 1962 to April 1963 by Chrysler Australia. It was the second Australian Chrysler Valiant model, replacing the RV1 (R series)
The SV1 Valiant (or "S Series" [3] ) was introduced in March 1962, [1] replacing the Chrysler Valiant (RV1)—also known as the "R Series"—only ten weeks after the release of its predecessor. [5] Like the RV1 it was essentially a US design just assembled in Australia. [4] It was an evolution of the previous model, featuring a revised radiator grille treatment with the name "Valiant" at the top. [5] The boot lid no longer included a non-functional spare wheel moulding and round tail-lights replaced the previous oblong units. [5] Mechanical changes included larger brakes, increased fuel tank capacity and a corrosion-resistant exhaust muffler. [3] A steering-column mounted gearshift replaced the floor-mounted shifter, however cars fitted with the automatic transmission option retained push-putton controls. [6]
The Valiant SV1 was produced in two models:
Valiant SV1-2 manual sedan
Valiant SV1-4 automatic sedan
The SV1 was offered only in 4 door sedan form. [4] Like its predecessor, the SV1 was marketed as Valiant by Chrysler rather than as Chrysler Valiant. [7]
The SV1 Valiant was offered only with the, 225-cubic-inch (3.7 L) capacity inline, [1] Slant-6 engine with a choice of three-speed manual transmission or three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. [1]
Some 10,009 SV1 Valiants were built prior to its replacement by the Chrysler AP5 Valiant in May 1963. [4] 4,513 of these were SV1-2 manual sedans and 5,496 were SV1-4 automatic sedans. [8]
New Zealand production
The SV1 was exported to New Zealand in 1963 and then assembled locally from knockdown kits from 1964 by Todd Motors in Petone, Wellington. [9]
The Chrysler Valiant was a full-size car which was sold by Chrysler Australia between 1962 and 1981. Initially a rebadged locally assembled Plymouth Valiant from the United States, from the second generation launched in 1963, the Valiant was fully manufactured in Australia. It was sold locally but also in New Zealand and South Africa, with smaller numbers also exported to South-East Asia and the United Kingdom.
FCA Australia, known unofficially as Chrysler Australia or Stellantis Australia, is the official Stellantis subsidiary in that country, operating as distributor of Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Abarth, Alfa Romeo and Fiat vehicles. However, there had previously been a "Chrysler Australia Ltd" which had operated as a vehicle manufacturer in Australia from 1951 until 1980, and was subsequently taken over by Mitsubishi Motors Australia.
The Holden EH is an automobile produced by General Motors-Holden in Australia from 1963 to 1965. The EH was released in August 1963 replacing the Holden EJ series, and was the first Holden to incorporate the new "Red" engine, with a seven main bearing crankshaft instead of the four main bearing crankshaft used in the "Grey" engine. At first, a larger capacity 149-cubic-inch (2,440 cc) engine was only sold attached to a three-speed manual gearbox or the "Hydramatic" four-stage automatic transmission with a column shift. The Controlled Coupling Hydramatic used in the EH was actually a four-stage, although it effectively worked as a three-speed unit, except at full throttle. The 179-cubic-inch (2,930 cc) engine was initially sold only with the "Hydramatic" transmission. The first EH with a 179-cubic-inch engine and a manual gear box was called the "EH-S4", and was fitted with an upgraded manual gearbox, having stronger gears than in the 149 gear box, and an upgraded clutch. The three-speed manual column shift gearboxes had no synchromesh on first gear, only on the second and third (top) gear.
The Chrysler Royal is an automobile which was produced by Chrysler Australia from 1957 to 1963. After investing in tooling to stamp body panels for the 1954 P25 series Plymouth locally, and with Chrysler headquarters in Detroit unwilling to assist in the costs of retooling for the new US models, Chrysler Australia made the decision to develop their own range, using as much of the existing tooling as possible, whilst also realising that the new car had to appear as different as possible. The doors and basic structure of the P25 sedan was retained, and with input from Australian and American Chrysler designers, the 1955 US Plymouth front sheetmetal was adapted to the P25 body and the rear quarter panels redesigned. They also added a wraparound rear windscreen, which caused development problems with Pilkington Glass, the Australian suppliers, who struggled to get the correct curved shape.
The Dodge Phoenix is an automobile which was produced by Chrysler Australia from 1960 to 1972.
