Cynthia "Cinny" Clare Kennard (born December 28, 1953) [1] is an American business and nonprofit executive, author and former broadcast journalist. She is the executive director of The Annenberg Foundation, based in Los Angeles, [2] [3] [4] and Annenberg PetSpace. [5] [6]

Kennard was a television news correspondent with CBS News in London, Los Angeles and Moscow, and a local television reporter in Texas, California and Indiana. Her journalism awards include a 1992 Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Award for coverage of the 1991 Persian Gulf War. [7]

She went on to a long career in nonprofit executive management with NPR, Smithsonian Media, and The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands.

Early career

Kennard started her journalism career in the late 1970s at WNLK Radio in Norwalk, Connecticut, as a reporter, anchor, and talk show host. [8] She was then an anchor and correspondent for WANE television in Fort Wayne, Indiana; KHOU television in Houston, Texas; [9] and WFAA television station in Dallas, where she covered the Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas sexual harassment hearings, the 1992 U.S. presidential election, and the historic 1990 race where Ann Richards became the governor of Texas.

As a correspondent for CBS News, Kennard covered the 1992 Los Angeles riots, the 1993 Russian constitutional crisis and the war in the former Yugoslavia. [9] [8]

Academic career at the University of Southern California

In 1999, Kennard became an assistant professor of broadcast journalism at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism from 1999 to 2003. [9] She is currently a senior fellow at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism's Center on Communication and Leadership and Policy, [10] [11] where she leads the Women and Communication Leadership Initiative. [9]

While at USC, Kennard helped to launch the International Journalism Program and other projects aimed at improving broadcast journalism, such as Reliable Resources, a Pew Charitable Trust-sponsored project to improve radio and television political coverage, and the Walter Cronkite Award for excellence in television political journalism, which was established as part of the Reliable Resources project. She researched and published widely on the role of females in broadcast war coverage, including co-authoring, "Characteristics of War Coverage by Female Correspondents," in the book, Media and Conflict in the 21st Century (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005). Her research on gender and television war coverage was presented at several conferences, including the American Political Science Association. Kennard also co-authored a piece on gender and communications in, "The Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Changes Everything." [13]

Executive career

Kennard transitioned from broadcast journalist to managing director and managing editor of NPR West, [8] launching NPR's footprint in the Western United States in Culver City, California. [8]

She continued her journalism career overseeing programming and operations for The Tavis Smiley Show, Day to Day, and the bi-coastal Morning Edition. [8]

Kennard is the former senior vice president of programming at Smithsonian Enterprises and managed the Smithsonian joint venture with Showtime-CBS, the Smithsonian Channel. She also worked with former Secretary of the Smithsonian G. Wayne Clough on an e-book, "Best of Both Worlds: Museums, Libraries, and Archives in a Digital Age."

Kennard also served as a jury member of the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for excellence in broadcast journalism for about 10 years. [9]

Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands (2010 - 2013)

Kennard served as Senior Advisor to the President at the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands, where national and foreign dignitaries and diplomats gather for Camp David-style summits and retreats. She was responsible for working to bring top elected officials [14] to Sunnylands, including former President Barack Obama, former U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein, the King of Jordan.

Kennard completed the strategic plan for Sunnylands and is the executive producer of, "A Place Called Sunnylands," an award-winning orientation film that runs in the Sunnylands Visitor Center.

In January 2015 she became managing director to work with Board Chair Wallis Annenberg and Executive Director Leonard Aube. [15] [16]

Committees and boards

Kennard is a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council, working to make the Los Angeles region better prepared, more secure, and more resilient in the face of all threats.

She co-founded the Carole Kneeland Project for Responsible Journalism and serves as an executive board member. [15]

Kennard also serves on the board of the GlobalPost, an online journalism website committed to providing international reporting rooted in integrity, accuracy, independence and power storytelling. [9]

Personal life

Kennard is married to Vittorio Morandin and currently lives in Los Angeles. She was born to an Irish-Catholic family in Milford, Connecticut. Kennard is a graduate of the Academy of the Lady of Mercy, Lauralton Hall (Class of 1972). She graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications from Northeastern University in 1977.

Starting July 2017, the school’s Dean is Willow Bay, succeeding Ernest J. Wilson III. The graduate program in Communications is consistently ranked first according to the QS World University Rankings.

The Annenberg Foundation is a family foundation that provides funding and support to non-profit organizations in the United States and around the world. Some of the Foundation's core initiatives are the Annenberg/Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) project, which funds many educational television shows broadcast on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) public television in the United States as well as The Annenberg Community Beach House, The Annenberg Space for Photography, Metabolic Studio, explore.org, Wallis Annenberg PetSpace and the Wallis Annenberg Center for Performing Arts.

Murray Fromson

Murray Fromson was a CBS correspondent and professor emeritus at University of Southern California's School of Journalism, and Center on Public Diplomacy. He was educated in the Los Angeles Unified School District, including Belmont High School in Downtown Los Angeles.

Edward Lifson is an American journalist, architecture critic, and academic. He was the Director of Communications for the Pritzker Architecture Prize. He was also a domestic, foreign and war correspondent and bureau chief for NPR National Public Radio; and he created and hosted a radio show in Chicago called "Hello Beautiful!" to explore and tell stories of urban issues, architecture and design. Lifson is an Adjunct Instructor in the Media Center at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. For NPR, in the U.S. Lifson covered urban affairs, politics, economics, labor and arts and culture. In 1996, he established the National Public Radio Bureau in Berlin, Germany. In Europe, he covered the rebuilding of Berlin as a city and a national capital, European Union, post-Cold War politics, NATO, the launch of the euro, immigration issues, and Central Europe’s transition to democracy and capitalism. As a war correspondent, he reported extensively for NPR from Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Macedonia before and during the war in Kosovo. Marc Ambinder is an American university professor, journalist and television producer. He is a former politics editor at The Atlantic, a White House Correspondent for National Journal, contributing editor for GQ, and was editor-at-large of The Week and a member of the USA Today national board of contributors. In 2017, he was the journalist-in-residence at the University of Pennsylvania School of Law. His third book, The Brink: President Reagan and the Nuclear War Scare of 1983, was published by Simon & Schuster in July 2018. He now teaches at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California, where he leads Annneberg's digital security initiative.

Annenberg TV News, or ATVN, is a student-produced 30-minute nightly news program serving the University of Southern California student body and Downtown Los Angeles. ATVN airs live at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday during the school year on YouTube and Trojan Vision, the school's on campus television network. Annenberg TV News is a product of USC Annenberg Media, a student-led media organization that is part of USC's journalism program.

She is an investigative reporter and news anchor who has covered stories around the world - both for ABC News as a correspondent and various major-market television stations. Geoffrey Cowan American lawyer, professor, and non-profit executive

Geoffrey Cowan is an American lawyer, professor, author, and non-profit executive. He is currently a University Professor at the University of Southern California, where he holds the Annenberg Family Chair in Communication Leadership and directs the Annenberg School's Center on Communication Leadership & Policy. In 2010, Cowan was named president of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands, a position he held until July 2016. In this role, Cowan was commissioned with the task of turning the 200-acre estate of Ambassador Walter Annenberg and his wife Leonore into "a venue for important retreats for top government officials and leaders in the fields of law, education, philanthropy, the arts, culture, science and medicine." Since Sunnylands reopened in 2012, Cowan has helped to arrange a series of meetings and retreats there. In 2013–14, President Barack Obama convened bilateral meetings at Sunnylands with President Xi Jinping of China and with King Abdullah II of Jordan. In 2016, President Obama hosted the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the site, where they released the Sunnylands Declaration. Prior to his time at Sunnylands, Cowan was appointed by President Bill Clinton as Director of Voice of America.

Lori Jane Gliha is an 18-time regional Emmy-winning investigative reporter for FOX31 in Denver, CO. She was recently honored as a 2021 finalist for the prestigious duPont-Columbia Award. She was also nominated for a national Emmy for her reporting on Traded and Trafficked, an investigation into child sex trafficking in Colorado. She produced and reported that program while working as an investigative correspondent for the news magazine show, Insight, on Rocky Mountain PBS. During her time at PBS, she was honored as Best Specialty Reporter by the Colorado Broadcasters Association and as best investigative reporter by the Heartland regional Emmy chapter. She also received a national Gracie award.

K.C. Cole is an American science writer, author, radio commentator, and professor emerita at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. She has covered science for The Los Angeles Times since 1994, as well as writing for many other publications, and has been described as "the queen of the metaphor in science writing".

Elise Hu American broadcast journalist

Elise Hu is an American broadcast journalist who hosts the TED Talks Daily podcast and serves as host-at-large for NPR. From 2015 to 2018, she was the network's first Seoul, South Korea, bureau chief.

Frank Mottek is an American broadcast journalist known as “The Voice of Business News in Los Angeles” for his business reports on radio and television stations in Los Angeles and hosting business news shows including Mottek On Money. His broadcasts and podcasts have provided business, consumer and financial news to millions in the Greater Los Angeles area. Frank also serves as moderator and master of ceremonies at business events and conferences. He is also known for his reporting and anchoring on TV stations KCAL9, CBS2 and KTLA5 in Los Angeles as well as The Nightly Business Report on PBS.

Michael Parks is a recipient of a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting award.

Natalie Brunell

Natalie Brunell is a Polish-American television news personality, investigative journalist, podcast host and educator. As of 2020, she is senior correspondent and investigative reporter for Spectrum News 1 LA as well as Adjunct Instructor at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. She hosts the Career Stories podcast.
