City Square station was an elevated rapid transit station located at City Square in the Charlestown section of Boston, Massachusetts. It was part of the Charlestown Elevated, which was open from 1901 to 1975.

History

The Charlestown Elevated opened on June 10, 1901. City Square station originally had a single island platform about 130 feet (40 m) long – enough for three-car trains. [lower-alpha 1] [2] :8 The platform was lengthened northward three times to accommodate longer trains. An extension to 175 feet (53 m) for four-car trains was constructed in October–November 1901. [2] :13 Extension for five-car trains took place in early 1905, and for six-car trains in November 1908. [2] :15,18

The 1908 extension was only temporary; a larger reconstruction of the station was needed to serve eight-car trains. [3] Two side platforms were built to replace the island platform. Work took place in 1909; train service was not interrupted during construction. [4] :1216 [5]

The Main Line Elevated, of which the Charlestown Elevated was the northern leg, was operated by the Boston Elevated Railway until 1947. It was operated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) from 1947, then by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The MBTA renamed the line as the Orange Line in 1967. The Charlestown Elevated was closed on April 4, 1975, and replaced by the Haymarket North Extension. [1]

  1. The original Main Line Elevated cars were approximately 46 feet (14 m) long. Later generations of cars were longer – 55 feet (17 m) and 65 feet (20 m).

The line runs south on the surface from Oak Grove station in Malden, Massachusetts through Malden and Medford, paralleling the Haverhill Line, then crosses the Mystic River on a bridge into Somerville, then into Charlestown. It passes under the Charles River and runs through Downtown Boston in the Washington Street Tunnel. The line returns to the surface in the South End, then follows the Southwest Corridor southwest in a cut through Roxbury and Jamaica Plain to Forest Hills station.

The station has two island platforms; each has one disused track, making them effectively side platforms. Boylston is not accessible for Green Line trains.

The station has two side platforms serving the two tracks of the Blue Line; an arched ceiling runs the length of the platform level. The E branch is a light rail line in Boston, Cambridge, Medford, and Somerville, Massachusetts, operating as part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Green Line. The line runs in mixed traffic on South Huntington Avenue and Huntington Avenue between Heath Street and Brigham Circle, in the median of Huntington Avenue to Northeastern University, then into the Huntington Avenue subway. The line merges into the Boylston Street subway just west of Copley, running to North Station via the Tremont Street subway. It then follows the Lechmere Viaduct to Lechmere, then the Medford Branch to Medford/​Tufts. As of February 2023, service operates on 8-minute headways at weekday peak hours and 8 to 9-minute headways at other times, using 13 to 17 trains.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Green Line B branch</span> Light rail line in Boston, Massachusetts

The B branch, also called the Commonwealth Avenue branch or Boston College branch, is a branch of the MBTA Green Line light rail system which operates on Commonwealth Avenue west of downtown Boston, Massachusetts. One of four branches of the Green Line, the B branch runs from Boston College station down the median of Commonwealth Avenue to Blandford Street. There, it enters Blandford Street portal into Kenmore station, where it merges with the C and D branches. The combined services run into the Boylston Street subway and Tremont Street subway to downtown Boston. B branch service has terminated at Government Center since October 2021. Unlike the other branches, the B branch runs solely through the city limits of Boston. The Green Line Rivalry between Boston College and Boston University is named in reference to the B branch, which runs to both universities.

The Haverhill Line and Newburyport/Rockport Line pass through the station on separate tracks but do not stop.

Orient Heights station is a rapid transit station in Boston, Massachusetts. The station serves the MBTA Blue Line. It is located off Bennington Street in East Boston's Orient Heights neighborhood. Formerly a Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad station under various names from 1875 to 1940, it reopened in 1952. The 1952-built station was closed in March 2013 for a complete rebuilding to provide full accessibility and reopened on November 26, 2013.

The Haymarket North Extension is a section of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's rapid transit Orange Line which currently constitutes the northern section of the line. It runs from North Station through an underground crossing of the Charles River, then along the Haverhill Line right-of-way to Oak Grove station in Malden, Massachusetts. Built to replace the Charlestown Elevated and originally intended to be extended as far as Reading, it opened in stages between 1975 and 1977.

The Causeway Street elevated was an elevated section of the MBTA Green Line light rail system in Boston, located in the area near North Station. It was in operation from 1912 until 2004, when it was replaced with a new tunnel and underground station on a slightly different alignment.
