Clarkston High School is a public high school located at 618 North Indian Creek Drive in Clarkston, Georgia, United States, [2] in central DeKalb County. As part of the DeKalb County School District, it is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Clarkston High School has the most diverse student body of all DeKalb County public schools, with 1,421 high schoolers representing 54 different countries in 2021-22. [1] [3] Students were reported to speak 47 languages there in 2014. [3] CHS has DeKalb School System's only program for hearing impaired high school students. [3] Another school for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, is also located in the city of Clarkston, about half a mile from CHS. [4]

The freshman class of 2021-22 had 538 students, many more than in the later grades, which had 298, 271, and 314 students in 10th through 12th grades, respectively. [1] Girls were outnumbered by boys, 46 to 54 percent. The majority ethnic or racial group was Black/African American students (59 percent), followed by Asian students (31 percent), with Hispanic, white, multiracial and American Indian/Alaska Native students making up the other 10 percent. [1]

The school mascot is the Angora and the school colors are green and gold. [3]

Athletics

In 2015, the CHS's boys cross-country team were surprise champions of the GHSA state title, and they won the state title again in 2016 and 2017. [5] The team had student athletes from over forty countries, including many who arrived in the United States as refugees. [5] In 2017, all eight of the top runners on the team were immigrants from African countries, including Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, and South Sudan. [6]

Briarcliff High School was a public high school opened by the DeKalb County School System in 1958 in order to relieve overcrowding at Druid Hills High School. Throughout the history of the school, Druid Hills was viewed as its "arch rival," and, with the closing of Briarcliff in 1987, the remaining students, and all the trophies, and other relics of the history of the school other than the buildings transferred to Druid Hills, where they remain today.

In 2006, she founded Fugees Family, Inc., the only network of schools in the U.S. dedicated to refugee and immigrant education. Luma’s work is not only changing the lives of children and families, but also shifting the narrative around refugees from one of fear to one of courage and resilience. Her TED Talk on educational justice has been viewed more than 1.8 million times. and she is the author of two books, 2022's Learning America: One Woman's Fight for Educational Justice for Refugee Children and the recently released memoir From Here.

Georgia Piedmont Technical College (GPTC) is a public community college based in Clarkston, Georgia. It is part of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) and provides education for a three-county service area, mostly in the metro Atlanta area. The school's service area includes Dekalb, Rockdale, and Newton counties. GPTC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award associate degrees, diplomas, and technical certificates of credit. Many of the school's individual technical programs are also accredited by their respective accreditation organizations. The College also offers free Adult Education courses for GED and HiSet test preparation and English as Second Language programming. Its Economic Development and Continuing Education division provides customized business and industry training to strengthen the workforce pipeline in Metro Atlanta.

Ahmed M. Hassan is a Somali American businessman and politician. He is a member of Clarkston, Georgia's city council, the first Somali to hold the position.

Edward Terry is an American politician who served as mayor of Clarkston, Georgia from 2014 to 2020. The city has been referred to as "the most diverse square mile in America" and "the Ellis Island of the South."
