Cross Keys High School is a public high school located in Brookhaven, Georgia, United States. Established in 1958, it is part of the DeKalb County School District and serves students from the Buford Highway Corridor in Brookhaven, Chamblee, and Doraville.

History

Cross Keys High School opened its doors in 1958. In 1965, following the integration of schools in DeKalb County, students from the all-Black Lynwood Park High School were transferred to Cross Keys High School. [1] This transition was part of the district's efforts to comply with desegregation mandates.

In June 2024, the DeKalb County School Board approved changing the school's mascot from the Indians to the Phoenix, in response to concerns about cultural sensitivity. [2]

Demographics

For the 2016–2017 school year the student body was 86% Hispanic, 6% Black, 7% Asian, and 1% White. [3] It is the most culturally diverse high school in the state, with students from 65 countries who speak 75 different languages. [4]

1,547 students were in attendance for the 2016–2017 school year. [5] Of those, 1,330 were reported to be economically disadvantaged. [5]

As of the 2023–2024 school year, Cross Keys High School had an enrollment of approximately 1,796 students, exceeding its capacity by 500 students. [6]

Academics

Cross Keys High School's overall performance is higher than 62% of schools in the state, with academic growth higher than 99% of schools in Georgia. [7]

Cross Keys was selected as a Georgia School of Excellence in 1996.

Athletics

The school's athletic teams compete as the Phoenix. [8] [6] The football team plays at Adams Memorial Stadium. Cross Keys offers a variety of sports, including soccer, basketball, and track and field.

Briarcliff High School was a public high school opened by the DeKalb County School System in 1958 in order to relieve overcrowding at Druid Hills High School. Throughout the history of the school, Druid Hills was viewed as its "arch rival," and, with the closing of Briarcliff in 1987, the remaining students, and all the trophies, and other relics of the history of the school other than the buildings transferred to Druid Hills, where they remain today.

Youth sports are offered through baseball, softball, and football programs that operate through the park. The lake at Murphey Candler Park offers fishing, and it is home to largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, and channel catfish. Buford Highway, a.k.a. the DeKalb International Corridor, and in the 1990–2000's as the DeKalb County International Village district, is a community northeast of the city of Atlanta, celebrated for its ethnic diversity and spanning multiple counties including Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnett counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. The area generally spans along and on either side of a stretch of Georgia State Route 13 (SR 13) in DeKalb County. It begins just north of Midtown Atlanta, continues northeast through the towns of Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville, and Norcross. The name of the corridor originates from the name of the highway which connects to the city of Buford. Creative Loafing's Atlanta edition named Buford Highway Atlanta's "best neighborhood for diversity" in their March 2012 Neighborhood Guide. The population exceeds 50,000.
