Claude Jean Jules César Abbes (24 May 1927 – 11 April 2008) was a French professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper.
Abbes played the majority of his professional career for local club Saint-Étienne, where he won the 1957 Première division, [4] the first title ever for the club.[ citation needed ]
He was also part of the France national team squads at the FIFA World Cups of 1954 and 1958, and played four matches at the latter, where France finished in third place.[ citation needed ]
He died on 11 April 2008. [5]

Regarded as one of the greatest defensive midfielders of all time, Makélélé has been credited with redefining the defensive midfield role in English football, especially during the 2004–05 FA Premier League season, where he played a key role in helping Chelsea win the title with 95 points. In homage, the defensive midfield position is sometimes colloquially known as the "Makélélé Role".
