Cliff railways in the Isle of Man

There have been five cliff railways in the Isle of Man, none of which remain operational. Usually referred to as 'cliff lifts', they were all railways, having wheeled carriages running on weight-bearing rails. The two Falcon lifts served the same hotel at different periods (and in different locations); the first Falcon lift was moved to become the Port Soderick lift, at the south end of the Douglas Southern Electric Tramway, with the Douglas Head lift at its north end. The Browside lift served the Laxey Wheel.

Lifts at the Falcon Cliff Hotel

Falcon Cliff was a large residence, dating from the 1840s, at the top of the cliff overlooking Douglas Bay. By 1887 it was converted to a hotel and entertainment complex. Two distinct cliff railways were built to carry customers between the hotel and the road along the sea-front.

First Falcon Cliff lift

The first lift was built in 1887 by Mr T. Cain, as a funicular with two parallel 4 ft (1,219 mm) gauge tracks. [1] It was 218 feet (66 m) long, rising 110 feet (34 m) on a gradient of 1:1.98. [2] The cars may have been water-balanced, [3] or driven by the same oil engine later used at Port Soderick. [2] [4] The cabins had a level base (as seen on photographs after they were converted to kiosks at Port Soderick). [lower-alpha 1]

The lift was under-used, and was sold in 1896 to the Forrester family to be moved to Port Soderick. [2]

Second Falcon Cliff lift

The second railway to serve the hotel was built in 1927 on a different alignment to the first; the line started at the end of a short cul-de-sac off the Esplanade, and led to the other side of the hotel building. It had a single 129 feet (39 m) track of 5 ft (1,524 mm) gauge, [2] [4] at an angle of 60° (1 in 0.57) [2] or 41° (1 in 1.15). [4] Powered at first by a 400V DC 6 electric horsepower (4.5 kW) motor, it was changed in 1950 to a 415V AC motor of the same power. [2]

The line closed in 1990. As of 2007 it remained in situ, though overgrown and inaccessible. [2] [4]

Port Soderick Cliff Lift

This was built in 1897–8 using some of the hardware of the first Falcon Cliff Lift. It provided an easy route between the southern terminus of the Douglas Southern Electric Tramway and the beach-level hotel and amusements of Port Soderick. The track was re-erected, again as a 4 ft (1,219 mm) gauge double track funicular, but this time on a wooden trestle supported by stone pillars. Two new cars with sloping or stepped floors were used. [6] The length was unchanged at 66 metres (217 ft), but laid on a gentler gradient (1:2.2) than at Falcon Cliff. [4] It was powered by an oil engine. [7] [4]

It closed about the same time as the Electric Tramway in 1939, and was dismantled in 1947–9. [7]

Laxey Browside Tramway

This mysterious [lower-alpha 2] line was built in 1890 to allow tourists more comfortable access to the Laxey Wheel. It was a double 5 ft (1,524 mm) gauge water-driven funicular, running for 300 feet (91 m) at a gradient of 1 in 4 from just downhill of the Laxey Wheel to the valley floor below. [8] [4] The cars were in toastrack form, with seven or eight benches holding three passengers each. The floor of each car was kept level by mounting them on much larger wheels at the downhill end than at the other. [8]

It closed either in 1906 [4] or in 1914 at the start of WW I, [8] and nothing now remains of the rails or stations.

Douglas Head Funicular Railway

Four years after the opening of the Douglas Southern Electric Tramway, this funicular railway was built to carry passengers between the harbour and the northern terminus of the DSET. Also referred to as the Douglas Head Incline Railway, [9] or the Douglas Head Cliff Railway, [4] it was constructed by Richard Maltby Broadbent, with two 4 ft (1,219 mm) gauge tracks running 450 feet (140 m) from harbour level at Port Skillion up a 1 in 4.5 gradient to near the DSET terminus. It was powered by an oil engine. [9] [4] The tracks were not quite parallel but splayed out as they climbed to allow the cars room to pass each other; unusually, the tracks bent to the left (going up) a third of the way from the bottom. [10] [11] The cars each had ten benches, seating four persons, arranged in back-to-back pairs, and stepped so that the uphill-facing bench of each pair was level with the downhill-facing bench of the next. [12]

It ran only in the summer, closing during WW I and from WW II until 1949. It closed after the 1953 season, following the closure of the DSET in 1939 and the introduction of a bus service to the top of Douglas Head in 1950. The tracks were lifted in 1955 to be re-used by the Manx Electric Railway near Ramsey. [10]

It is the only cliff railway in Britain to have appeared on a British postage stamp: the Isle of Man Post Office 5p definitive of 1988. [10] [13]

The Snaefell Mountain Railway is an electric mountain railway on the Isle of Man in Europe. It joins the village of Laxey with the summit of Snaefell, at 2,036 feet (621 m) above sea level the highest point on the island. It connects with the Manx Electric Railway (MER) in Laxey. The line is 5 miles (8 km) long, is built to 3 ft 6 in gauge and uses a Fell Incline Railway System centre rail for braking on the steep gradients. It is electrified using overhead wires at 550 volts direct current, with bow collectors.

The Isle of Man has a rich transport heritage and boasts the largest narrow-gauge railway network in the British Isles with several historic railways and tramways still in operation. These operate largely to what is known as "Manx Standard Gauge" and together they comprise about 65 miles (105 km) of Victorian railways and tramways. The Isle of Man Railway Museum in Port Erin allows people to find out more about the history of the Manx railways, and was until 1998 accompanied by a similar museum in Ramsey, which was dedicated to the history of the electric line, but this was closed and converted into a youth club. The steam railway to the south of the island, electric to the north and mountain line to the summit of Snaefell, the island's only mountain, are all government-owned, and operated under the title Isle of Man Railways, as a division of the island's Department of Infrastructure. The lines at Groudle Glen and Curraghs Wildlife Park are both privately owned but open to the public.

The Foxdale Railway was a 3 ft narrow gauge branch line which ran from St. John's to Foxdale on the Isle of Man.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bungalow railway station</span>

Bungalow Station is the only intermediate station on the Isle of Man's Snaefell Mountain Railway and is located where the main mountain road intersects the line.

This page details the rolling stock on the Manx Electric Railway on the Isle of Man, which is unique insofar as the railway still operates with its original tramcars and trailers, all of which are over one hundred years old, the latest dating from 1906. Save for a fire in 1930 in which several cars and trailers were lost, all of the line's original rolling stock remains extant, though many items have been out of use for a number of years, largely due to the decrease in tourism on the island over the last thirty years. Despite this, members of each class are still represented on site today, though not all are in original form or in regular use.

Douglas Southern Electric Tramway was a standard gauge tramway between the top of Douglas Head on the Isle of Man and the nearby resort of Port Soderick. The route ran atop the cliffs and crossed a number of viaducts and bridges.

Port Soderick is a small hamlet to the south of Douglas, capital of the Isle of Man, once famed for its pleasure grounds and beach. In later years there have been various attempts to rejuvenate the area, all of which have been unsuccessful to date. It still has a station on the steam railway.

The Rothesay tramway was a narrow gauge electric tramway on the Isle of Bute, Scotland. It opened in 1882 as a 4 ft gauge horse tramway, was converted to a 3 ft 6 in gauge electric tramway in 1902, and closed in 1936. It was the only public tramway to be built on a Scottish island.

The Isle of Man Sea Terminal is the arrival and departure point for all passenger and car ferries operating to and from the Isle of Man, and is located in Douglas, the island's capital. The Central Tramway Company is an electric-powered funicular railway located in the holiday resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The company has the distinction of being the oldest surviving Tramway Company in the UK, as the original corporation still operates the funicular today. Built in just 6 months between January and August 1881, the Tramway opened on Monday 1 August becoming the 3rd such cliff railway to operate in the borough.
