Club Asylum is the name of UK garage musician Jeremy Sylvester. They were originally a duo which consisted of Sylvester and Paul Emanuel. After the duo decided to go their separate ways, Sylvester continued to produce and remix under the Club Asylum moniker as a solo artist, and is still active to the present day. [1]

Biography

Sylvester and Emanuel first met during the early days of the UK garage scene at the London-based house and garage label Nice 'N' Ripe. [1]

The duo scored their first chart entry in 1998 with "Freek Me Up", a bootleg vinyl release of the Jodeci song "Freek'n You", which reached No. 92 on the UK Singles Chart. [2] This sparked interest from major labels such as Universal/EMI, Virgin, PolyGram and Strictly Rhythm. [1] Their UK garage remixes of songs would prove popular in the scene, with official garage re-releases charting in the UK, including K-Ci & JoJo's "Tell Me It's Real" charting at No. 16 on the official singles chart [3] and No. 4 on the UK Dance Singles Chart [4] and Kristine Blond's "Love Shy" at No. 28 [5] and No. 3 on the dance chart. [6] Other popular remixes include "Imagine" and "Run to Me" by Shola Ama and "Sweeter Than Wine" by Dionne Rakeem. "Imagine" was a No. 1 dance hit in 2000 [7] and was included in NME's "25 essential UK garage anthems" list. [8] Capital Xtra included "Run to Me" in their list of "The Best Old-School Garage Anthems of All Time". [9] "Sweeter Than Wine" reached No. 46 on the UK Singles Chart [10] and No. 2 on the UK Dance Singles Chart in 2001. [11]

Club Asylum have remixed notable songs including Another Level's "Freak Me", All Saints' "Bootie Call", Lutricia McNeal's "Someone Loves You Honey", Barbara Tucker's "Everybody Dance" (all from 1998) and Ginuwine's "What's So Different?" (1999).

Outside of Club Asylum, Jeremy Sylvester has produced, remixed and released material under many other aliases and as part of other groups/collaborations, including X-Factor 7 with DJ Disciple and Tuff Asylum with Karl 'Tuff Enuff' Brown.

In 2013, Sylvester appeared alongside many other garage pioneers in a documentary exploring the legacy of UK garage, Rewind 4Ever: The History of UK Garage. [12]

"Freek'n You" is a song by American R&B group Jodeci recorded for their third album, The Show, the After Party, the Hotel (1995). The song, released as the album's first single, peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995. Listed by Billboard magazine as one of the best selling singles of 1995, it was certified gold by the RIAA for sales in excess of 600,000 units.

Dionne Rakeem is a female vocalist from the Midlands. Her song, "Sweeter than Wine", reached No. 46 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 2 on the UK Dance Singles Chart.

"Sambuca" is a song by British UK garage duo Wideboys, featuring Dennis G on vocals. It was released in October 2001 as a single, and was a top 20 hit, peaking at No. 15 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 1 on the UK Dance Singles Chart. Two later releases, "Sambuca 2006" and "Sambuca 2008" were released on the Garage Jams and All Around the World labels respectively, which featured more remixes of the track.

Tru Faith & Dub Conspiracy was a collaboration between two UK garage groups, Tru Faith, and Dub Conspiracy. They are best known for their sole UK chart hit single, a cover of the Adina Howard song "Freak like Me", with British singer Imaani on vocals. Their version reached No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart in September 2000, and spent 5 weeks on the chart, as well as reaching number one on the UK Dance Singles Chart.

Tuff Jam are a British DJ, music production and remixing duo consisting of Karl 'Tuff Enuff' Brown and Matt 'Jam' Lamont. They began working together in 1993, and were instrumental in developing the UK garage sound. They presented a radio show on London's Kiss 100 from 1997 until 2000.

UK garage, abbreviated as UKG, is a genre of electronic dance music which originated in England in the early to mid-1990s. The genre was most clearly inspired by garage house, but also incorporates elements from dance-pop, R&B, and jungle. It is defined by percussive, shuffled rhythms with syncopated hi-hats, cymbals, and snares, and may include either 4/4 house kick patterns or more irregular "2-step" rhythms. Garage tracks also commonly feature 'chopped up' and time-stretched or pitch-shifted vocal samples complementing the underlying rhythmic structure at a tempo usually around 130 BPM.

"Sorry " is a song by UK garage duo Monsta Boy featuring Denzie on vocals. It was first released in 1999 on white label, then officially released as a single the following year via Locked On Records and XL Recordings. Stephen Emmanuel is a UK garage/dance music producer and songwriter, best known for the hits "What U Do" and "Coochy Coo", both of which feature singer Eska.

"Fly Bi" is a song by British electronic music producer/DJ Teebone featuring MCs Kie and Sparks. It was initially released on Rhythm Records in 1999, then as an official single the following year on major label Warner's East West Records. The song reached No. 43 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 1 on the UK Dance Singles Chart.

Sweet Mercy are an English house music duo formed in the late 1980s, consisting of Eric Gooden and Eric Powell. In 1992 in Manchester, the duo founded their own house and techno record label, Bush Records.

"Love Shy" is a song by the Danish singer Kristine Blond, released as a single in 1998. It peaked at number 22 on the UK Singles Chart. Two years later, it reached the top forty in the UK again, landing at number 28 in November 2000, due to the Club Asylum remix of the track becoming a UK garage club hit. The theme of the song discussed incelibacy and overcoming it.

Kristine Blond is a Danish singer and songwriter. Blond had success as a pop and R&B singer in the late 1990s and early 2000s. She achieved three top 40 hit singles on the UK Singles Chart. Her biggest hit, "Love Shy", peaked at No. 22 in 1998. A re-release of remixes was released in 2000 and peaked at No. 28, containing the popular UK garage mix by Club Asylum.

In Return is the second studio album by British singer Shola Ama. It was released by Freakstreet and WEA on 8 November 1999 in the United Kingdom. The project saw Ama working with several producers, including Fred Jerkins III, Stargate, Shaun Labelle, Soulshock and Karlin, D'Influence and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Co-writers included Angie Stone, Babyface, and David Foster. Two singles were released from the album: "Still Believe" and "Imagine", both reaching the top thirty of the UK Singles Chart.

Amira Rasheed, or simply known as Amira, is a dance music singer best known for the song "My Desire" which charted three times on the UK Singles Chart, with its highest position at No. 20 in 2001. It also reached No. 1 on the UK Dance Singles Chart for one week in its first release in December 1997, and was also the first number one Dance hit of 1998 after it climbed back to the top of the chart three weeks later in the week ending 3 January 1998. The song was produced by house music group Blaze, and each release contains numerous mixes of the song, with a popular UK garage mix by the Dreem Teem. Capital Xtra included this version in their list of "The Best Old-School Garage Anthems of All Time".
