Colin Beck is a Solomon Islands diplomat. He is the Solomons' current permanent representative to the United Nations and current ambassador to the United States. [2] He also served a one-year term from 2008 to 2009 as vice-president-elect of the 63rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly. [3] [4]
As his country's representative in the United Nations,he spearheaded the motion which led to the United Nations General Assembly re-inscribing French Polynesia on the United Nations list of non-self-governing territories in May 2013. [5]
The United Nations General Assembly is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN),serving as its main deliberative,policymaking,and representative organ. Currently in its 78th session,its powers,composition,functions,and procedures are set out in Chapter IV of the United Nations Charter. The UNGA is responsible for the UN budget,appointing the non-permanent members to the Security Council,appointing the UN secretary-general,receiving reports from other parts of the UN system,and making recommendations through resolutions. It also establishes numerous subsidiary organs to advance or assist in its broad mandate. The UNGA is the only UN organ where all member states have equal representation.
The United Nations Trusteeship Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations,established to help ensure that trust territories were administered in the best interests of their inhabitants and of international peace and security. The trust territories—most of them former mandates of the League of Nations or territories taken from nations defeated at the end of World War II—have all now attained self-government or independence,either as separate nations or by joining neighbouring independent countries. The last was Palau,formerly part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands,which became a member state of the United Nations in December 1994.
