Colleen Brown (born in Guelph, 1965) is a Canadian artist and writer living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is primarily known for her sculptural works which incorporate a variety of natural and industrial materials.
Brown was born in Guelph in 1965. Her mother, Doris Brown, died in 1974 apparently from a heart attack but was later found to have been a victim of serial killer Russell Maurice Johnson, known as "The Bedroom Strangler". [1]
Brown is both an artist and a writer. Her first book If you lie down in a field, she will find you there was published in 2023 by Black Dog Publishing and centers around memories held by Brown and her four siblings of their mother. [1] The book also includes themes of feminism, the judicial system, and small town ecology. [2] She is the recipient of the 2016 Emerging Artist Award from Portfolio Prize, [3] which aims to support artists and develop the arts community in the Vancouver region. [3] Her work is often large scale and mixed media, and takes on themes of space, materiality, and memory.
Brown has been involved in exhibitions in Vancouver and beyond. In 2002 her work was in Pour Occupation Immediate: Performative Urban Space and Architecture [4] at the Western Front Society in collaboration with Montreal's artist-run Centre des arts actuels Skol [5] curated by Johnathan Middleton [6] [7] and Daniel Ray. The show focused on "public and private space, and the sociopolitical role the body plays in inhabiting those spaces." [8] Brown's portion of the show included a series of photographs entitled Forty Lucky Moments that were described as funny depictions with a message about money. [9]
Also in 2017, Brown participated in the Vancouver Art Gallery's Ambivalent Pleasures, the first exhibition in a triennial series called Vancouver Special, whose goal is to offer "sustained engagement with the contemporary artists who make Vancouver a dynamic art community." [10] The series' name comes from a cost-friendly housing style dubbed Vancouver special for its prominence in Vancouver from the 1960s-1980s. Her works in this show included the Evening Bruise series, [11] consisting of colorful clay forms attached to incomplete picture frames and hung on the wall, recalling both painting and sculpture.
Brown was one of ten artists who participated in Emily Carr University's Ten Different Things (2017-2018), a series of projects investigating "the role of culture as a critical ingredient in the construct and vitality of the contemporary city” [12] from the university's Living Labs research program. Brown's contribution, The Sculpture Game (2018) was a collaborative workshop in which participants worked together to make small sculptures as an analogy for city-making. [13] Other artists included Laiwan, Holly Schmidt, and Casey Wei.
In 2024 Brown's work was featured in the show Aporia: Notes to a Medium at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery on the University of British Columbia's Vancouver campus. [14]
In 2017 Brown had a solo show at Unit 17 in Vancouver entitled Hang up, bend and slump, Low pressure Ohio, which includes a collection of large abstract sculptural forms. [15] Another solo show took place in 2018, entitled, That Mountain is a Good Listener at Burrard Arts Foundation [16] in Vancouver, which featured a selection of multimedia works inspired by landscape painting. The Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a public university of art and design located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The institution is named for Canadian artist and writer Emily Carr, who was known for her Modernist and Post-Impressionist artworks.

The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the campus of the University of British Columbia. The gallery is housed in a building designed by architect Peter Cardew which opened in 1995. Cardew received a RAIC gold medal for the building's design in 2012. It houses UBC's growing collection of contemporary art as well as archives containing objects and records related to the history of art in Vancouver.

Weih received her BFA from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design and her MFA from the University of British Columbia. She works in installation, objects, video, and print. Her projects include a range of aesthetics including found, manufactured, or crafted materials. She is part of the production team at Other Sights for Artists' Projects. Weih was a programmer for VIVO Media Arts Centre, which she initiated community oriented projects, and founded Signal and Noise Media Art Festival.

Elspeth Pratt is a Canadian contemporary artist based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Anne Riley is an interdisciplinary artist of Slavey Dene and German ancestry. Born in Dallas, Texas, Riley currently lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. Several of Riley's works derive from her identity as Indigiqueer, a term coined by Cree artist TJ Cuthand, and commonly used by Indigenous artists including Oji-Cree storyteller, Joshua Whitehead. The term is interconnected with Two-spirit, an identity and role that continues to be vital within and across many Indigenous nations. Through artistic projects, Riley engages Indigenous methodologies that prioritize learning through embodiment, nurturing communities as well as the non-human world. Riley received her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2012. Riley is a recipient of the City of Vancouver Studio Award (2018–2021).
Cindy Mochizuki is a multimedia Japanese Canadian artist based in Vancouver, British Columbia. In her drawings, installations, performance, and video works created through community-engaged and location-specific research projects, Mochizuki explores how historical and family memories are passed down in the form of narratives, folktales, rituals and archives. Mochizuki's works have been exhibited in multiple countries including Japan, the United States, and Canada. Mochizuki received MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the School For Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University in 2006. She received Vancouver's Mayor's Arts Award in New Media and Film in 2015 and the VIVA and Max Wyman awards in 2020.
Azza El Siddique is a Canadian-Sudanese visual artist based in New Haven, Connecticut. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University (2019) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from OCAD University. When she was four, her family immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia.
