Columbus Square Mall was an American indoor shopping mall in Columbus, Georgia. It was one of the first indoor shopping malls to open in the state of Georgia. [1]

Columbus is a consolidated city-county located on the west central border of the U.S. state of Georgia. Located on the Chattahoochee River directly across from Phenix City, Alabama, Columbus is the county seat of Muscogee County, with which it officially merged in 1970. Columbus is the third-largest city in Georgia and the fourth-largest metropolitan area. According to the 2017 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, Columbus has a population of 194,058 residents, with 303,811 in the Columbus metropolitan area. The metro area joins the nearby Alabama cities of Auburn and Opelika to form the Columbus–Auburn–Opelika Combined Statistical Area, which has a 2017 estimated population of 499,128.

Georgia is a state in the Southeastern United States. It began as a British colony in 1733, the last and southernmost of the original Thirteen Colonies to be established. Named after King George II of Great Britain, the Province of Georgia covered the area from South Carolina south to Spanish Florida and west to French Louisiana at the Mississippi River. In 1802–1804, western Georgia was split to the Mississippi Territory, which later split to form Alabama with part of former West Florida in 1819. Georgia is known as the Peach State and the Empire State of the South. Atlanta, the state's capital and most populous city, has been named a global city. Atlanta's metropolitan area contains about 55% of the population of the entire state.

Rise

Columbus Square Mall opened in 1965. [1] The style of the mall was typical for that time period, a single-level with anchor stores on each end of the primary corridor. The two original anchors were Sears and JCPenney. One interesting fact was that the Sears store was independently owned by the Sears, Roebuck and Company. The store was simply attached to the separately owned mall. In the late 1970s, Columbus Square expanded, adding another wing which extended from the rear of the main corridor and terminated with a third anchor, local department store Kirven's, which continued to operate a large downtown store for many years after opening the Columbus Square location. Another famous local store at Columbus Square was Kiralfy's, a women's clothing store.

Sears, Roebuck and Company, colloquially known as Sears, is an American chain of department stores founded by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck in 1893, reincorporated by Richard Sears and new partner Julius Rosenwald in 1906. Formerly based at the Sears Tower in Chicago and currently headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, the operation began as a mail ordering catalog company and began opening retail locations in 1925. The first location was in Evansville, Indiana. In 2005, the company was bought by the management of the American big box chain Kmart, which formed Sears Holdings upon completion of the merger.

Fall

In early 1993, with attendance declining, Kirven's went out of business, leaving one of the mall's three primary stores vacant and beginning a slow but steady process of store closings in the rear wing of the building. The entire rear wing was eventually closed off, and the few remaining tenants were relocated to the front of the mall.

The mall soon began to fall into a state of disrepair, and the facility began to be perceived as a place of crime and violence among local residents, further reducing attendance. JCPenney relocated to Peachtree Mall the following year, leaving the mall with only a single anchor store. In 1999, the city exercised the option to buy the mall after voters approved the building of a new library at the location with a 1% sales tax. The Sears building was not included in the purchase. The mall was soon demolished. Sears remained open as a stand-alone store, its former mall entrance walled in, until the mid-2000s when a new Sears store opened in Columbus Park Crossing in North Columbus. At that time, the school district bought the Sears property.

Peachtree Mall

Peachtree Mall is a shopping mall in Columbus, Georgia. After the closing and demolition of Columbus Square Mall in the early 2000s, Peachtree Mall is the one of two major shopping areas in Columbus, the other being Columbus Park Crossing.

Columbus Park Crossing

Columbus Park Crossing is an outdoor center featuring shopping and dining on the North side of Columbus, GA. Columbus Park Crossing features a variety of premier national retailers, restaurants and a movie theatre, as well as specialty local stores and eateries.

North Columbus, sometimes referred to as "Northside," is a district in Columbus, Georgia, situated just north of the district of Bibb City. It is bounded roughly by Moore Road on the north, Manchester Expressway to the south, Moon Road on the east, and J. R. Allen Parkway on the west.

The site is now home to the Columbus Public Library, which opened January 3, 2005. [1] In January 2008, the Sears building was demolished to make room for a new Muscogee County School District administration building. This event put an end to the final chapter of the mall's history.

The Rouse Company opened the mall in October 1966. In its early stages it had 60 retailers; the original mall was anchored by Rike's and Sears department stores. There was also a Liberal supermarket, a smaller department store called The Metropolitan, and a multi-screen cinema.

Northshore Mall Shopping mall in Peabody, Massachusetts, United States

The Northshore Mall is a shopping mall in Peabody, Massachusetts, located on Route 114. The mall is currently anchored by Nordstrom, JCPenney, DSW, and two Macy's locations. The mall is 1,991,350 square feet (185,002 m2) in size, and most of this space is located on one level, with the exception of the Nordstrom wing and most anchor stores. The former Jordan Marsh store was four stories, until it was demolished to make way for the Nordstrom store. The mall is currently managed by Simon Property Group, who owns 56.4% of it, and is less than a mile away from Simon's Liberty Tree Mall.

The Cumberland Mall is a shopping mall in the Cumberland district of Metropolitan Atlanta near the suburbs of Smyrna and Vinings. It was the largest shopping mall in Georgia when it opened on August 8, 1973.

Genesee Valley Center shopping mall in Flint Township, Michigan

Genesee Valley Center is an enclosed shopping mall located in Flint Township, Michigan, outside the city of Flint, Michigan, United States. Opened in 1970, the mall is 1,272,397 square feet (118,209.5 m2) of leasable area. The mall has three anchor tenants: JCPenney, Macy's, and Play Big. It comprises more than 120 tenants, including a food court, and an external concourse called the Outdoor Village which also features a Barnes & Noble bookstore. The mall is located on Miller Road and Linden Road, near the junction of Interstate 69 (I-69) and I-75.

Stratford Square Mall is a shopping mall, opened in 1981, in Bloomingdale, Illinois, a northwestern sub of Chicago. The 1,300,000-square-foot (120,000 m2) mall has three active anchors: Kohl's, Sears,and Burlington Coat Factory. There are also three vacant anchors, last occupied by JCPenney, Carson's, and Macy's.

Seaview Square Mall

Seaview Square Mall was a shopping mall located in Ocean Township, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. It has been repurposed as a power center and was renamed Seaview Square Shopping Center in 2012. The 856,000-square-foot (79,500 m2) mall, located at the intersection of Route 35 and Route 66, was originally constructed in 1977 as an indoor mall. It faced stiff competition from the more upscale Monmouth Mall, located five miles (8 km) further north on Route 35 in Eatontown. One of its four anchors never opened, and several smaller stores, and Stern's and Steinbach, two of its anchors, were victims of the then-indoor mall's then-state of decline.

Woodland Mall is an enclosed super-regional shopping mall located in Kentwood, Michigan, a suburb of Grand Rapids. It comprises over 100 tenants in 1,158,942 square feet (107,669.2 m2) of retail space, with three anchor stores, along with Barnes & Noble, Forever 21, H&M, Gap, Pottery Barn, and The North Face as junior anchors, and a movie theater. The mall is owned and managed by Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust, who acquired it from its developer, Taubman Centers, in 2006.

Springdale Mall

Springdale Mall is a shopping center located in Mobile, Alabama, United States, directly across from Bel Air Mall. Opened in 1959 as an open-air shopping center, Springdale Mall was later redeveloped as an enclosed shopping center. Facing competition from larger shopping centers in the area, Springdale was demolished in stages in the 2000s, with most of the former enclosed mall being replaced with big box stores.

NorthTown Mall is shopping mall located in Spokane, Washington. The shopping mall first opened in 1955 and has been expanded several times, with its biggest expansion occurring between 1989 and 1991. Golf Mill Shopping Center is a shopping mall located at 239 Golf Mill Center in Niles, IL, United States. The shopping center has a gross leasable area of 1.1 million square feet. It is managed by Sterling Retail Services. It borders the intersections of Golf Road, Milwaukee Avenue and Greenwood Avenue. The shopping center has over 100 specialty shops, five department stores, an AMC Theatres, two grocery stores, an XSport Fitness gym, a 9-story office tower and other outparcels.

The Shoppes at Bel Air

The Shoppes at Bel Air, formerly Bel Air Mall, is a super-regional shopping mall, located in Mobile, Alabama, United States. The mall has a gross leasable area of 1,345,000 square feet. It is the oldest continuously operating enclosed super-regional mall in Alabama and serves as one of the primary retail venues for the west Mobile shopping district located at the vicinity of Airport Boulevard and Interstate 65. Currently, Belk, Dillard's, JCPenney, and Target serve as the mall's anchor stores; the mall also features more than 130 stores and restaurants.

Northland Mall was a shopping mall located on the north side of Columbus, Ohio, at the intersection of Morse Road and Karl Road. It opened in 1964 as an open-air shopping center. Northland was the first of the four directionally-named shopping hubs in Columbus, along with Eastland (1967), Westland (1969) and Southland (1975) [a small strip center, now closed]. Though popular through the 1990s, three new shopping centers were completed in the late 1990s and early 2000s that took businesses and shoppers away from Northland. It closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2004. The site has subsequently been redeveloped as Northland Village, a multi-use complex containing government offices, retail stores and the Franklin County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center.

Ashland Town Center is an enclosed shopping mall located in the city of Ashland, Kentucky, United States. One of two malls serving the city, it is located on U.S. Highway 23 near downtown Ashland. The mall features more than seventy retailers and restaurants, as well as a food court. Current anchor stores are JCPenney, Belk Men and Home, Belk Women and Kid's and TJ Maxx. The mall is managed by WP Glimcher.

Nittany Mall is an enclosed regional shopping mall in College Township, Pennsylvania. It is located at the intersections of Route 150 and Route 26, one mile off the I-99 corridor. It is uniquely situated within four miles of the Pennsylvania State University, allowing the mall to attract both area residents as well as college students. Current anchor stores include Dunham's Sports and Macy's.

Albany Mall

Albany Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Albany, Georgia. Opened in 1976, it features Belk, JCPenney, Dillard's, Old Navy, and Books-A-Million as its anchor stores. It is managed by Aronov Realty.

Northwest Arkansas Mall

The Northwest Arkansas Mall is the primary fully enclosed retail hub in the Northwest Arkansas region, located in Fayetteville.
