The Commissioner of Laws (also Commissioner of Law [2] and Commissioner for Laws [3] ) is an office in Malta that was established by the 1980 Revisions of Statutory Laws Act. [4]
The first commissioner was Franco Debono, whose appointment was widely publicised in the Maltese media. His appointment by the Labour led administration was lambasted by the Leader of the Opposition Lawrence Gonzi, as his party was not consulted beforehand while others argued Debono's past as a rebel MP should have motivated the government to pick a "more unifying figure." According to Labour MP Owen Bonnici in 2013, the responsibilities of the post include working to remove conflicting, unconstitutional and human rights-breaching laws. [5]
In June 2019, former judge Antonio Mizzi was appointed by the government to succeed Debono. [3]
The Nationalist Party is a Christian-democratic, conservative political party in Malta. It is one of two major contemporary political parties in Malta, along with the governing Labour Party. The Nationalist Party is currently in opposition to the Labour Party.
Lawrence Gonzi, is a Maltese politician, retired Nationalist politician and lawyer, who served for twenty-five years in various critical roles in Maltese politics. Gonzi was Prime Minister of Malta from 2004 to 2013, and leader of the Nationalist Party. He also served as speaker of the House from 1988 to 1996, and Minister of Social Policy from 1998 to 2004, as well as Deputy Prime Minister from 1999 to 2004. He served in practically all positions in Parliament, being also Leader of the House, an MP and Leader of the Opposition.
John Dalli is a former Maltese politician who served as Cabinet Minister in various Maltese governments between 1987 and 2010. He was European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy between 2010 and 2012.
Alfred Sant, is a Maltese politician and a novelist. He led the Labour Party from 1992 to 2008 and served as Prime Minister of Malta between 1996 and 1998 and as Leader of the Opposition from 1992 to 1996 and from 1998 to 2008. Sant is an established writer and playwright and has published several books.
Joseph Muscat, is a Maltese politician who served as Prime Minister of Malta from 2013 to 2020, and Leader of the Partit Laburista (PL) from June 2008 to January 2020. Muscat was re-elected as prime minister in the elections of 3 June 2017. Previously he was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2004 to 2008. He was Leader of the Opposition from October 2008 to March 2013. Muscat identifies as a progressive and liberal politician, with pro-business leanings, and has been associated with both economically liberal and socially liberal policies.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in Malta are of the highest standards, even by comparison to other European countries. Throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the rights of the LGBT community received more awareness and same-sex sexual activity was legalised in 1973, with an equal age of consent.
The University Students' Council, also known in abbreviation as KSU, is a Maltese national students' union. It is the oldest extant student organization in Europe. The KSU was established by Arturo Mercieca (1878-1969), later Chief Justice Sir Arturo Mercieca (1924-1940), in 1901 as the Comitato Permanente Universitario, also previously known as University Permanent Committee. The students union is involved in students' national and international politics.
Michael Falzon is a Member of the Maltese Parliament of the Malta Labour Party (PL). He stood as a candidate for the second and tenth electoral divisions of Malta for the PL. He was elected from both districts.
Angelo "Anġlu" Farrugia is a Maltese politician is the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta. Previously he served Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, a Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister for work, workers' rights and parliamentary affairs.
Edward Scicluna is an economist who served as the Finance Minister of Malta. He is a Member of Parliament elected on behalf of the Maltese Labour Party. Scicluna will assume the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Malta as from 1st January 2021.

Edward Zammit Lewis is a Maltese politician within the Labour Party and is currently Minister for Justice, Equality and Governance. He has been a member of the Maltese House of Representatives since 2013. Following the general elections held on 9 March 2013, won by the Labour Party, he was appointed to serve as Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness and Economic Growth. In April 2014, he was appointed Minister for Tourism, a post which he occupied up until June 2017. This was followed by his appointment as Minister for European Affairs and Equality in July of 2019 till January of 2020.
Christian Cardona is a Maltese politician and lawyer. He was a Member of Parliament for the Maltese Labour Party and was elected Deputy Leader for Party Affairs in 2016. He served as Malta's Minister for the Economy, Investment and Small Business between 2013 and 2020.
Christopher Fearne is a Maltese physician and politician. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Health in April 2014 and Minister for Health since April 2016. In July 2017, the Labour Party elected him as Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs, thus assuming the role of Deputy Prime Minister of Malta and Leader of the House.
The 2019 European Parliament election was held in Malta on 25 May 2019. 8 different political parties took part in the elections, of which, only 2 won seats in the European Parliament; the Labour Party and the Nationalist Party, with 4 and 2 seats respectively.
The Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister of Malta, officially called Head of Secretariat of the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Malta, is the most senior political appointee in the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta. The Chief of Staff is appointed by the Prime Minister as its senior aid. This position acts as the principal advisor to the Prime Minister and it coordinates the work action of the different departments of the Government.
Robert Abela is a Maltese lawyer and politician, currently serving as the Prime Minister of Malta. A Member of Parliament since 2017, he replaced Joseph Muscat as Leader of the Labour Party following the party's internal leadership election held on 11 January 2020, and was instated as prime minister on 13 January. Abela is the son of George Abela, the eighth president of Malta.
