Communes of the Republic of the Congo

The Republic of the Congo includes 16 communes, [1] some divided in urban boroughs (arrondissements) and in quarters.

Two of these communes, Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, have the same name as departments but with a different area [2] .

Ouésso is a town and a commune in the northern Republic of the Congo at the border of Cameroon, lying on the Sangha River and surrounded by rainforest. It is linked by ferry with Brazzaville and is known for the pygmy people who live nearby. It is the capital of the Sangha Department.

Owando is a town and a commune located in the central Republic of the Congo lying on the Kouyou River. It is the capital of Cuvette Department and of Owando District. It is home to a market and has an airport.

Dolisie, known as Loubomo between 1975 and 1991, is a city and a commune. It is the capital of Niari in the south western of the Republic of the Congo, the country's third largest city and an important commercial centre. The city lies on the eastern edge of the coastal rainforest and has a population of 117,920.

Kayes is a small town in the Bouenza Department of the Republic of the Congo. It is located about 2 km south of Nkayi, the country’s fourth largest city. Kayes is also the name of a district, of which the town of Kayes is the capital.

Mossendjo is a town and a commune located in the Niari Department of the Republic of the Congo.

Nkayi, also known as N'kayi, is a town and a commune in the Bouenza Department of the Republic of the Congo. It is the country's fourth largest city with a population of 100,783.

The Departments of the Republic of the Congo are divided into 86 districts and 6 communes; which are further subdivided into urban communities and rural communities ; which are further subdivided into quarters or neighborhoods (quartiers) and villages. Note the departments of Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire are made of 1 commune each, then divided in urban districts (arrondissements).
