Concord was launched at Dartmouth in 1807. From then until 1809 she traded widely. Between 1809 and 1812 two different histories emerged. The registers carried her as trading with North America. Other sources, however, have her sailing to the British Southern Whale Fishery as a sealer or whaler. She made three voyages between 1809 and 1816 in this capacity and then returned to trading. She was wrecked at the Cape of Good Hope in November 1816.
Concord first appeared in Lloyd's Register (LR) in 1807 with Adams, master, Haniford, owner, and trade Dartmouth–London. [2]
The registers were only as accurate as owners chose to keep them. In Concord's case accuracy does not appear to have been a priority.

Between 1809 and 1816, her owner was Alexander Birnie. [3]
1st whaling/sealing voyage (1809–1811): Captain Thomas (or James) Garbutt (or Garbut) sailed from London on 23 November 1809. [3] Concord sailed from Portsmouth on 14 January, bound for New Holland. [4] She arrived at Port Jackson from London on 28 June 1810 with "sundries". She sailed on 31 July, bound for Rio de Janeiro and the Cape of Good Hope. [5] She arrived at the Cape on 8 December. She returned to Port Jackson on 19 February 1811 with sundries. She then sailed on 9 March to go seal hunting. She arrived at Macquarie island in April. She left a sealing gang and returned to Port Jackson on 1 May. She sailed again for Macquarie on 1 June, arriving there on 12 July. She returned to Port Jackson on 5 October with seal skins. [6] She next sailed on 14 November for Macquarie Island. [5] While she was sealing off the west side of the island on 24 January 1812 one of her boats overturned and six men were drowned. [7] [8] She left Macquarie Island on 10 March, bound for England with 13,700 skins and 50 tons of seal oil. [7] From Macquarie Island she sailed via Campbell Island. [7] [9] Concord was under the command of Captain Jarvis when she arrived at Gravesend from the South Seas on 15 September 1812; [10] [3] a week earlier she had arrived at Falmouth.
2nd whaling voyage (1812–1814): Captain William Elder sailed from England in October 1812. [3] Concord arrived at Port Jackson from London on 13 July 1813, carrying merchandise. She left on 19 September for the sperm whale fishery. [5] She was reported to have engaged in whaling around Norfolk Island. [11]
3rd whaling voyage (1814–1816): Captain William Elder sailed in 1814. Concord, Elder, master, arrived at the Cape on 26 September 1815 from Timor. [12] She returned to England on 20 February 1816 with 300 casks of sperm oil. [3]
The Register of Shipping for 1816 showed Concord with Scott, master and owner, and trade London–Cape of Good Hope. [13] On 21 July 1816 Concord, Scott, master, arrived back at Gravesend from the Cape. [14]
Concord, Scott, master, sailing from London, arrived on 4 November 1816 at Table Bay, Cape of Good Hope. There a violent storm almost immediately drove her and Woodbridge on shore. Passengers and crew were rescued, and part of the cargo was saved, though greatly damaged. By 5 November Concord was a complete loss. [15] [a]
Sydney Packet was an American ship launched in 1801, taken in prize c. 1814 while under another name, condemned, and sold to Alexander Birnie & Co. She sailed to New South Wales, and next made three voyages as a whaler. She was lost in 1826.
Archduke Charles was built in Newcastle, England in 1809. She was sheathed in copper in 1810 and partially resheathed with copper in 1812. She made one voyage transporting convicts from Ireland to New South Wales, and on her return voyage to Britain she carried a cargo from China for the British East India Company (EIC). She was wrecked in 1816 while carrying troops from Quebec to Nova Scotia.
Albion was a full-rigged whaler built at Deptford, England, and launched in 1798. She made five whaling voyages to the seas around New South Wales and New Zealand. The government chartered her in 1803 to transport stores and cattle, to Risdon Cove on the River Derwent, Tasmania.
Indispensable was a sailing ship built in France and launched in 1791. She was captured in 1793 at the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars and thus came into British hands, keeping her name. She performed two voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1793 and 1797. During this period and later she made two voyages transporting convicts to New South Wales. Amongst her notable events were the discovery of Indispensable Strait (1794), the capture of a Spanish vessel (1798), and the rescue of some castaways (1814). She later went on serve as a whaler in the South Seas until autumn 1827. She ceased trading after this last voyage and was broken up by April 1830.
Henry Wellesley was a barque built in 1804 by Bacon, Harvey & Company at Calcutta, British India. In 1808 a French privateer captured her, but she returned to British ownership. Between 1820 and 1824 she was a whaler that made three voyages to the British southern whale fishery. Later, she twice transported women convicts from England to Port Jackson, New South Wales. She was wrecked near Calais in 1841.
Rambler was launched in America in 1812. The British captured her in 1813 as she was returning to America from Manila. She then briefly became a West Indiaman. In 1815 she became a whaler in the Southern Fishery. She made four complete whaling voyages and was wrecked on her fifth.
Otter was launched in America in 1799. She appeared in the Register of Shipping in 1809, after she had already made the first of three voyages as a whaler. She then started trading with the Mediterranean where the French captured her in 1813.
Swan was launched at Flensburg in 1806. By 1808 Samuel Enderby & Sons had acquired her. Between 1808 and 1810 she made one whaling voyage during which she rediscovered Bouvet Island. The Enderbys sold her and from 1811 on she traded widely. Then in 1823 the Enderbys repurchased her and she made two more whaling voyages for them, this time on a reconnaissance voyage to the waters around and north of the Seychelles. Although she herself was not very successful, her reports of abundant whales resulted in other whalers exploiting a new whaling ground. The Enderbys sold her again and she then became a West Indiaman. She was last listed in 1833.
Brook Watson was launched in 1796, probably in Holland but possibly in Denmark. She became a prize in 1801 and by 1802 was a whaler in the British Southern Whale Fishery. She made two whaling voyages between 1802 and 1806. She then became a West Indiaman and was last listed in 1809 or 1810.
Spring Grove was a Spanish vessel, launched in 1801, that had been taken in prize in 1806 and that her new owners had renamed. She made six voyages as a Southern Whale Fishery whaler before she wrecked in 1824 on the outbound leg of what was to have been her seventh voyage.
Venus was launched at Deptford in 1788 and made 15 voyages as a whaler in the British southern whale fishery. Of 812 whalers in the British southern whale fishery database for which there was data, she had the fifth highest number of whaling voyages. She was last listed in 1823.
Regalia was launched at Sunderland in 1811. In 1819 she made a voyage to Calcutta, sailing under a license from the British East India Company (EIC). She also sailed to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. From Sydney she engaged in several sealing hunting voyages to the waters around Macquarie Island. In 1826 she transported convicts from Dublin to New South Wales. From 1831 until 1852, when she was wrecked at Davis Strait, Regalia was a whaler in the northern whale fishery.
Argo was launched in 1802 in France, possibly under another name, and captured c. 1804. She became a privateer and then a whaler. She made two complete whale hunting voyages in the British southern whale fishery. A US Navy frigate captured her on her third whaling voyage.
Comet was launched in 1791 at Rotherhithe. At the outbreak of war with France, she briefly became a privateer before the British East India Company (EIC) chartered her for one voyage to bring back sugar, saltpeter, and other goods from Bengal. Between 1812 and 1821 she made three voyages as a whaler in the British southern whale fishery. Then between 1823 and 1840 she became a whaler based in Hull, whaling in the northern whale fishery. She returned to trade in 1841 and was lost on 1 December 1843 homeward bound from Quebec.
Caroline was launched at Philadelphia in 1800. She was taken in prize. New owners retained her name and she appeared in British records from 1813. From 1820 on she was based at Hobart in Van Diemen's Land. From there she sailed to and from Port Jackson and on seal hunting voyages to Macquarie Island. She departed on a sealing voyage in November 1824 and wrecked at Macquarie Island on 17 March 1825; her crew were rescued some five months later.
Atalanta was launched in Holland in 1795, perhaps under another name. She was captured in 1798, and thereafter traded generally as a British merchantman. She was brig-rigged. Between 1801 and 1804 she made two voyages as a slave ship in the triangular trade in enslaved people, and may have been temporarily captured during the second. She then became a West Indiaman. Next, between 1808 and 1814, she made two voyages as a whaler in Australian and New Zealand waters. After the whaling voyages she traded more widely, especially to the Baltic. She was last listed in 1833.
Harriet was launched in Massachusetts in 1809. The British captured her and on 13 January 1813 a prize court condemned her. New owners retained her name. She became a West Indiaman, and made one voyage to New South Wales. Between 1818 and 1832 she made four complete voyages as a whaler in the British southern whale fishery. She was lost in October 1833 in the Seychelles on her fifth whaling voyage.
Mary Ann was launched in 1806 at Chester. She made one voyage as a slave ship in the triangular trade in enslaved people. Between 1812 and 1814 she was a whaler in the British southern whale fishery. Afterwards she started trading with Charleston, but in November 1816 she was driven ashore near Liverpool as she was outward bound. She was surveyed and found not worthy of repair.
Grand Sachem was launched at Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1801. She was registered at Bideford in 1803, but until 1815 sailed from Milford Haven. Between approximately 1803 and 1822, she made eight voyages as a whaler in the British southern whale fishery. She was last listed in 1822 and was broken up in 1826.
Robert Quayle was launched at Liverpool in 1814. Between 1816 and 1819 she made several voyages to India, sailing under a licence from the British East India Company (EIC). Between 1819 and 1821 she made one voyage with cargo to New South Wales, and then remained to engage in whaling. After her return to Britain she traded to South and North America. She was wrecked in December 1838 while engaged in the timber trade with Canada.
