The Independent Women's Football League (IWFL) was the first women's American football league established by women players for women players. The league was founded in 2000, began play in 2001, and played its last season in 2018. Members of the original roster of the Austin Outlaws were the league's founders. Following the establishment of the league as a separate entity from the team, former Outlaws players Laurie Frederick, Jaime Bailey, and Sandra Plato became the original IWFL executive council.
The Philadelphia Firebirds are a women's football team in the Independent Women's Football League based in Philadelphia. They are in the Eastern Conference, North Atlantic Division with the Boston Militia, New York Nemesis, and New York Sharks. The team was formerly known as the Philadelphia Phoenix and formerly played in the National Women's Football Association. Upon moving to the IWFL, they changed their name so as to avoid confusion with their fellow IWFL franchise, the Carolina Phoenix.

The New York Nemesis were a women's tackle football team playing out of the Capital District of New York. It was a member of the Independent Women's Football League (IWFL), a league with over 30 teams across the United States. The Nemesis played in the Northern Conference, with home games on the campus of Schenectady High School in Schenectady.
The H-Town Texas Cyclones were a team of the Independent Women's Football League. Based in Houston, the Cyclones played their home games at Reggie Grob Stadium on the campus of the Spring Branch Independent School District. The Cyclones were the second IWFL team based in Houston, after the Houston Energy. However, while the Energy competes in Tier I, the Cyclones were expected to compete in Tier II. Both teams were to compete for talent and fans with the Women's Football Alliance's Houston Power.
The D.C. Divas are a women's gridiron football team that plays in the Women's Football Alliance. Based in the Washington metropolitan area, the Divas play their home games at The St. James fieldhouse in Springfield, Virginia. Formerly, the Divas played at Eastern High School in Washington, D.C.; Largo High School in Largo, Maryland; the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, and at John R. Lewis High School in Springfield.
The Clarksville Fox is a football team in the Independent Women's Football League. Based in Clarksville, Tennessee, the Fox play their home games on the campus of Northwest High School.
The Wisconsin Warriors were a football team in the Independent Women's Football League. Based in Greendale, the Warriors played their home games on the campus of Greendale High School. The Warriors were the defending IWFL North American Champions of 2009.
The Binghamton Tiger Cats played their sixth season overall and fourth as a member of the Women's Spring Football League (WSFL) in 2014. The Tiger Cats Women's Tackle Football team based in Binghamton, New York began play for its inaugural 2009 season as a member of the Women's Football Alliance and for the 2010 season as a member of the Independent Women's Football League. The Tiger Cats competed as an independent team in 2011. The Tiger Cats completed the 2013 season as the WSFL Northeast Division Champions in the 8 man division and were also a WSFL National Championship Runner-Up.
The New England Intensity was an American football team in the Independent Women's Football League based in Medway, Massachusetts. Home games were played at Joseph P. Hanlon Field on the campus of Medway High School in Medway.
The Maine Rebels are a football team in the Independent Women's Football League based in Portland, Maine. Home games are played at Memorial Stadium on the campus of Deering High School. They were formerly known as the Southern Maine Rebels until 2011.
The Southern California Breakers were a football team in the Independent Women's Football League based in Orange County, California. Home games were played on the campus of Fullerton Union High School.
The Nor Cal Red Hawks are a women's football team based in Redding, California. They are members of the Independent Women's Football League. They played in 2010 as an exhibition team and began play of their first regular season in 2011 in Sacramento. However, injuries postponed their 2011 season. There is one other women's football team in Redding, who are in the same league as the Red Hawks: the Redding Rage. It was announced in 2012 that the team would relocate to Redding for 2013. The Red Hawks will now play in the IWFL's Pacific West division, along with the California Quake.
The Northeastern Nitro is a team that competes in the Women's Spring Football League that began play in the 2011 season. They have recently relocated to CT. Formerly based in Danbury, Connecticut, the Nitro played its home games on the campus of Immaculate High School.
The Huntsville Tigers is a women's American football team located in Huntsville, Alabama. The Tigers played their first season of full-contact football in the spring of 2012. This was the Tigers' first season as a new team. The team consists of former Alabama Renegades and Tennessee Valley Tigers players as well as a number of new players.
The Tennessee Train are a women's American football team of the Independent Women's Football League (IWFL). They are located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and play their home games at Chattanooga Central High School. The team was founded in 2013 as a member of the Women's Football Alliance. The Train became members of the IWFL in 2015.
